Picked up the truck this weekend, totally love it… Have had no issues mechanically, went over the thorough inspection list provided here and everything checked out…

Got home and was digging into the head unit features and that’s when I noticed what looked like 5-6 tiny black spots on screen… peeled back the protective cover thinking maybe dirt or dust between, but it actually looks like it’s inside the screen… My guess is dead pixels or something…

not a huge immediate issue, but called dealer… Service manager said he has no issues ordering new screen and will call when it’s in to have me come up…

does anyone know if the screen is a separate piece that’s replaceable? He said the entire unit doesn’t need replaced, but I’ve never had a HU that wasn’t one piece before…

I have the same issue pretty much in the same location. I don't know if they are dead pixels as they are still visible when the screen is off.

I didn’t even look when screen was off… I’ll have to check later today…

You guys realize that the screen has a "protector film" over it from the factory, right?
It doesn't look like anything's on it, but it's there. Perhaps whatever blemishes/etc you see are on the film itself, and not the actual screen.

Peel it off, then verify if you really have a bad screen.
If you're interested, Amazon has the following matt screen protector, which fits the 14" screen on our trucks perfectly, and works real well (no more glare, fingerprints, etc):
    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09V5RSQ93?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details

If you choose to get one of these, wait till you receive it and only then remove the OEM, so you have little to no clean up/dust to deal with when installing the matt shield.

yes, I peeled the OEM protector back before I called… like I said in OP, it wasn’t something trapped between… But I have ordered that protector already, and will add it once this issue is fixed by dealer…

I think there are 2 protective screens on it. One is a thick screen to be peeled of before use. The other thinner screen is to keep it on for scratch protection while using it.

This was the same issue with people reporting bubbles.

I’ve got a few bubbles but it’s from the thin one I peeled to check on the spots…. This thin one is precision cut and I don’t think there’s another under it… so if there was another on top, they must have removed it during prep…

thats the plan… they gave me no run around, said ordering the parts this morning and will let me know when in…

so far this has been the best dealer I’ve worked with in all of my car buying years… hope it stays that way, I’ll be a customer for life…

You got me looking at my screen now. Something I didn’t even think of inspecting.

Update: Took it in last Thursday and they took pics and are reaching out to Toyota to see how to handle it. One one hand I'm like "its clearly faulty just replace it", but on the other hand it's not a critical failure at this point, so I dont mind them taking their time to figure it out.

I'll give it 2 weeks before I start reaching out...

This, I'm surprised how many people use it with white background. Dark mode looks better and will mostly hide the deador stuck pixels.

When the truck starts up the screen is white you can't change the color of the safety agreement. That's where I first noticed it on day one.

I've had this issue for 12 weeks now. Had to wait for a Toyota TFS to come verify and order the replacement. This is a confirmed issue with the screens. No recall as of yet due to the low amount of people having the issue. It is not a screen protector so those that keep claiming it in the comments below are WRONG! From what the TFS told me its an entire unit not just a screen replacement. Mine gets replaced along with 24 other issues on my 1794 this Thursday. Ill let you know for sure then.

Also keep in mind as soon as they receive the replacement unit you have 10 days to get in and replace it before they have to return the unit back to the factory. Due to shortages in electronics Toyota dealerships are only allowed to hold those items for 10 days. Then they must reorder them again! Stupid...but it is what it is.

Thanks for the info! About how long from your first complaint until they decided to replace? Wondering how long to give my dealer before bugging them...

So your wait from first complaint was 12 weeks??? Seems excessive... And 24 OTHER issues?! That's a new record I think...

The reason for the 12wks is partially due to an issue with the dealership i purchased it from (Wesley Chapel Toyota) Stay away from them! Once i moved to Toyota of Tampa Bay dealership it only to about 2wks to get a TFS to the shop to evaluate if it was fixable or replaceable and then parts came in about 5-7 days later.

I'm not kidding on the 24 items. Anything from cosmetic to, mechanical. The fit and finish of this truck is sub par for what I know Toyota to be. Came from twin 4runners and before that a Tacoma.

Gotcha... Luckily (knock on wood) my Dealership has been the best I've dealt with in all my years of driving/buying vehicles, so hopefully this situation doesn't change that... I'll give them 2 weeks from first contact before I inquire...

That is horrible about the other issues... I took the very thorough pre-delivery info post from here with me and everything checked out, other than the screen issue which I didn't notice until later that evening... Hope they can get you taken care of quickly!

Toyota has been good about honoring every defect listed across the forums. As frustrating as it can be just work with them not against them and they will take care of you.

I will say this, request for a Toyota FTS person to come service the vehicle. A fair amount of the dealerships still not nothing about how to fix anything on these trucks just yet. This can lead to them breaking clips and damaging other components during assessments. Now I get this could happen with anything. But I personal want someone who was at the factory building these to come do the work vs some joe shmo yanking on panels and taking parts off if they have no idea. In time the dealerships will get the experience they need but for a truck this new I'm not going to be the genie pig. The FTS has more experience IMO.

    Good luck on your repairs!

Update: the spots have gotten progressively darker over time. Just got word back from my dealer today they've ordered a replacement unit. Apparently they're made by Panasonic. Question for anyone who has had the work done, how extensive was it? How long did it take the shop?

They’ll pull the cubby on top where the 12V outlet is and under that there are (4) 10mm bolts then the whole thing just pull forward. Should take no more than 15 minutes to swap. Make sure that they log a TAS ticket to link the new radio ID with your VIN otherwise Toyota Connect won’t work afterwards. GL

What’s a TAS ticket, the tech has to put in a request to Toyota ‘corporate’ for this?
