Just wanted to start this thread to introduce my new 22 TRD PRO. I'd previously owned a 2012 SR5 4WD (see my thread on that) that I'd owned since new and sold a few months ago because of the crazy used-car prices.

Going to start doing a bit of work on this one, but will initially not touch the Fox suspension (huge improvement over the 5100s on my previous Sequoia) or the wheels.

My first few items will be:

1- Spidertrax 1.25 spacers to keep the original BBS forged wheels but get the stance a bit wider for point 2
2- Bushwacker OEM flares, leaving them black
3- Integrated Trailer Brake Controller (OEM from 21 Tundra with a custom 3D printed bezel for stock look)
    4- Rigd Ultraswing tire carrier
5- Aries Pro front bull bar
    6- Gobi roof ladder
7- Custom Gobi TRD Pro roof rack low profile basket (Gobi is being great about it and will be putting one together this winter).

I installed the Bushwacker OE Flares in black and Spidertrax 1.25" wheel spacers. Going to give the wheels spacers a fair chance but will check the torque on them every 1000kms or so. I've got my eye on Methods 701 or 705 in case I don't find the spacers reliably safe. It'd be a pity to not use the OEM BBS Pro Forged wheels though, the F2 colour on mine (matte black) look great in my opinion.

Here are some pics of the fender flares and the wheel poke with the spidertrax.

    Cheers

    Thanks!

Just drove 400km with the Spidertrax spacers installed (after following the instructions and checking torque after 70kms or so), can certainly feel that the steering wheel is a bit more sensitive to imperfections and bumps. This makes sense given the longer moment arms due to the wider track. I'm going to continue monitoring the spacer bolts but am leaning towards going with Method Racing 701 or 705 wheels instead to get the same offset as the spacers. May have a set of 5 TRD Pro BBS wheels coming available.

Were the spacers strictly for the tire poke, or were you having clearance issues with the 33s?

No, the spacers were just to line the tires up with the fenders a little better. In my last Sequoia, I ran 25 offset wheels (vs the OEM +60) and the same fender flares and I liked the look. I was trying to avoid replacing the really nice OEM TRD Pro wheels, but it looks like I will anyway as I'm getting a little bit of a steering wheel shimmy at 50-65 mph (90-110 km/h) with the spacers. My wheels and steering were balanced perfectly for the first 4700km prior to the installation of the spacers (500km ago), but now I have this little shimmy that I really don't like. I'll be taking the spacers off to run the vehicle without them until the MR705 wheels come in. Really a pity because I really like the OEM TRD Pro wheels and I have 5 of them (one for the spare in rotation).

Going to have to find a way to get the heritage Toyota centre cap to fit in the MRs.

    Fotnot,

The 33s actually fit better without the spacers lol. There was absolutely no rubbing at full turn and full compression and extension. With the spacers, and the increased scrub radius, I had to remove the little front mudflaps (in the front part of the front wheel wells) because the 33s just rubbed at full turn and full compression.

    Hope that helps

thanks for that man! i'm looking at runnin 33s once the stocks wear out (tires are expensive :(), but also wanting to keep the 275s and not go wide really. good to know the 33s will fit fine. i really like the TRD PRO BBS wheels. only thing i'd like to swap them for are the heritage wheels from the land cruiser, but i don't see anyone wanting to swap for these black ones anytime:rolleyes:. i'll be keeping up with this build. look forward to the progress and reportings that come out of it.

Update on a slightly older thread. The spidertrax have worked out great, turns out the shimmy was due to a crappy wheel balance. Took it in to a different tire/wheel shop and they nailed it. Funny that the shop that couldn't balance it was the Toyota dealership that I bought the truck from. It's a massive dealership in Edmonton, Canada.

Also, installed a REDARC trailer brake controller, mounted on the left switch panel (that I changed for one with 5 switch holes vice the stock 3 plus storage).

REDARC controller works great and makes towing my other toy a breeze.

Had my 22 TRD Pro at the dealership today and compared it side-by-side to a 23 Sequoia Limited (no driving). Several take-aways, but most importantly, I'd never trade my 2nd Gen for the new one - period.

1- I knew about the issues with the interior dimensions and cargo space buffoonery in the 23 but this is the first time that I had the chance to compare every seat and position to each other, as well as the usability of the cargo space. Words can't really describe how Toyota pooched it on the 23.
2- The interior in the 23 "looks" great, and does feel better than the 2nd gen. This is look and feel but not quality. the leather on the 2nd Gen seats is in a different category.
3- The weight and solid feel of each door on the 2nd Gen feels like it weighs twice as much as the new Sequoia.
4- The seats on the new Sequoia are much much harder and not nearly as comfortable.
5- Parked side by side, the difference in approach and departure angle is very evident. I didn't realize that the new Sequoia had so much overhang both front and rear compared to the 2nd gen.

My biggest finding? If Toyota had provided a slight exterior facelift to the 2nd Gen (sharper lines and new tail lamps), updated the dash, put Dual mode injection and the 8-speed in the 5.7L (like it has in many Lexus V8s), and kept everything else of the 2nd Gen, it would've been a keeper.

My 22 TRD Pro is my last Sequoia...

Hey Mike, it's pretty straight forward, as the Sequoias already come wired for a Trailer Brake Controller from the factory. The electrical connection for the TBC is under the kick panel on the driver's side (above the foot rest for the drivers left foot.) This video is really helpful. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Kn2O4eR7R8

You will need a specific Sequoia cable to connect the REDARC TBC to the Sequoia. Here's the list of parts from 4wheelparts.com, (note that these are Canadian prices).

Hopefully this helps. The REDARC works amazingly well and I have no complaints. I've towed my empty 18ft trailer (1400lbs) all the way to my 6500lb boat/trailer combo.

An update on my original plans:

1- Spidertrax 1.25 spacers to keep the original BBS forged wheels but get the stance a bit wider for point 2: Installed and working out well by allowing me to keep the factory BBS forged wheels with Falken Wildpeak AT3W 275/70R18, while pushing the wheels out a bit to fill out the Bushwacker flares.

2- Bushwacker OEM flares, leaving them black: I think the pro should've come stock with some kind of flares. I think these look good and really finishes off the truck.

3- Integrated Trailer Brake Controller (OEM from 21 Tundra with a custom 3D printed bezel for stock look): Ended up not using a Tundra OEM and went with the REDARC Tow Pro Elite. The installation was a breeze and I used the opportunity to replace the stock switch panel with an OEM 5 switch panel. Gives me two additional switch locations for future use.

4- Rigd Ultraswing tire carrier: Will not be doing this. Will be going the route of a custom rear steel bumper with integrated tire carrier.

5- Aries Pro front bull bar: Same here, will be installing a custom front steel bumper with TSS and radar cruise compatibility with a winch mount.

6- Gobi roof ladder: Will be ordering one as soon as I get confirmation that they can deliver on point 7.

7- Custom Gobi TRD Pro roof rack low profile basket (Gobi is being great about it and will be putting one together this winter): Haven't heard much back from them and will follow up late winter.

    New items:

8- Plan to have Tandem Offroad install the locking rear diff during a family trip to Texas in late summer '23.

9- Installing a Toyota Comfort Plus kit (Bluetooth hub, trickle charger, cabin electric heater). This should be done shortly as I've received the parts but Xmas holiday events got in the way :)

10- Heated 2nd row seats: Having a shop in Edmonton install the Katzkin seat heater kit in stock 2nd row captains seats.

I'll post some pictures when things start going in.

Hey @EliSeq , 2 requests if at all possible:
    1. do you have a link to the fender flares? i agree they seem to fit it and look better (not to mention protect it). when i get the larger tires, i'm considering going slightly wider than the stocks and would like to protect it a bit.
    2. if possible, but no stress/worries if you can't....would you be able to snag a pic of a tire mounted without the spacer to see the setup with the flares. i'm a little worried about adding the flares without the tires/wheels pushed out and it have the parade float look. if you can't and/or it's too much trouble, no worries. just figured i'd ask and let you tell me yay or nay.

the spacers still going well for you and no shimmy came back after your tire re-balance?

Also, for #4 and #5 @EliSeq how are you doing it? Do you have a fabricater who is going to build you one-off?

    Hi Fotnot,

The flares that I used are these https://www.bushwacker.com/product-detail/BWR30912-02/fender-flares-oe-style-4pc

I'll try to find a couple of pics that I took after installing the flares but prior to installing the spacers, didn't look too good. I'd absolutely recommend the spacers, I was a bit nervous because we all read the posts about the negative experiences with spacers, but I think that comes down to how people install them and did they install brand name (made in the USA / Canada) spacers. I torqued them to spec, and marked the bolt and nut with paint to check to see if they were holding (with red locktight). They haven't budged at all and I do a five tire rotation every 2-3000km so I get to see them every 3 months or so - nil issues.

For the fenders, it's going to be a bit of a project that I'll post on here when I start. I plan on designing my own and then using a local fabricator to make the first set. I'm using CAD, 3D printer, and laser cutter (for 1/4 inch modelling plywood) and will make the prototypes that way. When I'm happy, I'll get a local metal shop to cut the steel and a friend of mine that owns a welding shop to put the first one together.

Looking forward to this and want to get started this spring / early summer. I'm just not happy any of the Tundra ones for (07-13) that fit our Sequoias.

Did you ever get any of these mods done? It's quite the list. Last thing you might want to consider adding is a transmission cooler since you'll be towing.
