Electric cooler for camping...Dometic?

Looking for an electric cooler for camping. It would be used for things like meats, milk, etc until the main fridge is cold enough. Is Dometic the way to go and I'm looking for something comparable to a 60 qt. Thanks.

Thanks. I didn't know ARB made something like that. I'll check it out. An electric cooler would be nice and save trips for bags of ice lol.

 

I like this one...50 qt looks like a descent size.

I will be pulling the trigger sometime soon on an ICECO VL45 or JP42 soon. They seem to be about half the cost of ARB/Dometic and have a 5 year warranty.

This is the exact one I got when they last had a sale. Totally worth it, the compressor is made by a german company and the warranty is unbeatable. Very happy with mine. The only issue is that the actual internal temperature is about 4 degrees warmer than what the reading says.

 

Dometic has worked great for me. Check out the PLB40 as well. It is a stand alone battery that will power your cooler and has pass through tech if you have it plugged in.

I have a dometic cfx45, i feel like i overpaid seeing how happy others are with their iceco’s
Having said that, my cfx is great and the fit and finish is really good. Very quiet as well.

I got the smittybilt fridge a few years ago on sale for $350 and it’s worked good. I think it’s around $650 now, but look for sales. If money didn’t matter, I’d go with dometic.

 

Remember that you can go down in size, since you don't need to add ice. I put an Alpicool C40 in my teardrop and have been using it for a few months. Not as stout as a Dometic or ARB, but WAY cheaper and works for me.

 

IMO the most important part of the travel fridge is the compressor. Danfoss (recently changed their name to SECOP) is the leader in this arena and used by Dometic, ARB and Iceco. Iceco is the best priced of the three and I much prefer their metal exterior to the competition's plastic exterior. I went with the VL65 dual zone 'cause who doesn't like ice cream in the desert?

 

Ice cream is the exact rationale i used with the wife when she asked what was wrong with ice in a cooler. She eventually saw the light when i reminded her how much she hates the heat and how much she loves oreo cookies n cream.

 

I love the fact that I no longer have food floating in melted ice, no draining the ice chest. And, I love not buying ice!

 

I feel you. Even in zip lock bags, the water would still sometimes get in, or just make the packaging soggy or just slosh around like crazy and spill out when you lifted it. Dont get me wrong, coolers are fine, i still use them for day trips, or just for drinks.

 

My buddy picked up a BougeRV on Amazon and it survived the Rubicon. Don't know who makes the compressor but I was surprised. It even has an LED light inside, which was very helpful when you're looking for a brewski in the dark. Oh.. and what I liked about it was that it has wheels and a retractable handle. Just throwing it out there.

 

Wheels are definitely a nice touch. I think the LED light inside is pretty standard isnt it?

Frozen 2L pop bottles are the secret. On lomger trips we use a normal cooler with frozen bottles for drinks and fridge for food. Can get 4-5 days with a decent cooler and 4 bottles of ice.

My wife, 2 kids and I got this one about 6 years ago when we took a two and a half week camping trip to Acadia national park, the white mountains and bar harbor. It never got scorching hot but did a great job keeping our food / drinks cold. It’s on the smaller side but can be placed on end so it opens like a refrigerator. I know it isn’t top of the line or on par with others mentioned, but it’s much cheaper and works really well.

Thermoelectric, AKA the Peltier method of refrigeration. As I recall it can achieve a max of about 40* below ambient temps. If you're not in super hot weather it's a fantastic option.

Why not just a regular cooler? It only has to stay cold for about 12 hours maximum. Fill a couple juice or milk jugs with water and toss them in your deep freeze at home and you always have ice when you want to go camping.

 

I have had an Engel fridge/freezer for 20 years. Works with DC or AC currents and has held up well. Has worked from below sea level to 13,000 feet. It is a work horse.

 

I have this brand of fridge. Been going strong for over 5 years now. Mine has a danfoss compressor, not sure what this new version has but mine does not have wheels. Anyway it's a lot cheaper than the main brands. I bought mine from Mike's Custom Toys but it looks like he is not selling them anymore. Average price is around $450
