In the market for a ‘21 or ‘22 2500 and really can’t make up my mind. I have read a lot and driven both. The ten speed on the GM is awesome but, there is nothing wrong with the 6 speed on the Ram. I’m sure it will come down to the best deal on the right truck, just curious what you guys have to say about either engine ( I am not getting rid of the tundra).

@ColoradoTJ is one of the resident diesel/towing gurus here. He’s got a duramax that he “works” like it’s supposed to and can likely offer some helpful advice on the GM side of things.

I’ve got to imagine Dardge is tightening things up with regards to the item built around such an amazing engine as that’s been the knock on them for so long but who knows.

You’re obviously interested in a diesel - but do you *need* one? Would a 1ton gasser work for you? Not trying to tell you how to spend your clams but personally if I’m not towing 12k+ Lbs 50miles or more per trip at least 3x a week, then I’d be in a ¾ -1 ton gas market. YMMV

    What are you towing?

Who is going to perform the maintenance?

Check maintenance costs. How much are fuel/oil/air filters, injectors, etc. To replace a fuel system on a CRD from contamination is 10-15k dollars.

Tires. They hate diesels. Buy some Centramatic wheel balancers to extend the life of your tires. Best 200.00 I ever spent and was so impressed I installed them on my HD trailer.

    https://www.centramatic.com/balancers.rhtml

    Ram:

I’m no fan of Dodge/Ram and over the years on here have bashed them pretty hard. That being said, I also have to be objective and sometimes that means eating some crow. Today’s Ram is a top contender for anyones money and are one of the best looking trucks on the market. If my wife wouldn’t hand me divorce papers if I brought another one home…..

For this guy, give me the best you have to offer and I will buy that. Not a fan of optional diesel motors and transmissions. Ram is the only one that does this in the HD market and it drops them sales.

I would not go with a multi link rear axle for heavy duty use. They ride amazing…yes. When you have to replace all the bushings later on in all the links…remember me telling you. This puts me into a 3500 series truck which I would buy anyway for payload and drivetrain options.

My Ram would be 3500, HO Cummins option with the Aisan transmission in the Laramie package or higher. No Ram boxes for me due to issues 2 years down the road with figment.

    GM/Duramax:

I own one. If I was in the market today, this would still be my choice hands down due to the new motor/fuel injection system in the L5P.

The 10 speed “Allison” has proven to be a good unit coming out of GM’s plants instead of Allison.

Here was my 5 year review.

With the current offerings its a "least of all evils" decision. I went through it a couple years ago, thought I'd just replace the old 2500HD Duramax with a new one, but also really liked the way the Dodge was set up.

What I found was that the drive for ever increasing power while at the same time lowering emissions in all the new diesels makes for a lot of problems. Unless you're towing, and probably towing heavy, very consistently, you wind up with emission problems (clogged cats, etc). The "fix' was to either cut or hollow out the cats, which just seemed ridiculous in a brand new vehicle as you'd be voiding the warranty.

I asked my neighbor that runs an auto repair shop what he'd been seeing, and his recommendation on the new trucks was "none of them, but if you have to buy new the Duramax was the least worst". His follow on was to find an old Cummins or keep the Duramax I had, and I went with the latter option.

If you buy used , Ram has a recall out for the fuel pumps . They’re changing all the CP4 to CP3 or something like that .

I can't add anything more valuable than Chris did but the Duramax would be my first choice and the HO Cummins with the Aisin transmission (or a manual if it was an option) would be my second choice. I'd also be in a 3500 because for about $2k more, they're way more capable. I think times have changed now but at one point, diesel 2500s didn't have much more payload than 1500s.

To add, only on 2019-2020 model year trucks. Ram was smart to go back with the CP3 injection pump in 2021.

Detroit 6-71 2stroke. Anything else is kinda embarrassing.
6v silver aluminum bits are acceptable, but the inliner sounds better.

the v8 is too heavy to be useful.

So let’s keep this thread in the reality zone. No light duty truck is offered with a two stroke Detroit diesel.

Very good point. In that video I posted, the Ram had just under 2000 lbs payload. This is where a lot of people make mistakes. Upgrade truck, purchase bigger trailer….overloaded again. Don’t get me wrong, I would rather be overloaded in a HD truck than a 1/2 ton due to exhaust brakes and sway control.

My maintenance supervisor’s 2019 Ram 2500. It’s over on payload…and length laws. Lol. He just got pulled into a truck stop and ticketed.

Kinda funny (well, not for me) I thought the same thing when buying my two Cummins powered trucks. I had more engine trouble than “Dodge” stigma problems.

This is why when buying my current truck, the wife said “no dodges or bring home divorce papers too.” I think she was joking…but I wasn’t going to find out either.

Thanks guys, to answer a few questions, I pull a 14k lb trailer so a gas would work. However, I borrowed my buddies ‘21 Cummins to pull it and you didn’t even know it was there. I want the diesel for resale and towing it will not be my primary vehicle. Obviously in today’s market there are not a lot of choices out there, I am trading in my C6 ZO6 on this so I will be going with the best deal probably. Since I’m trading in my Vette, I want something nice! I have driven both and like both but have not towed with the duramax. I am a GM guy at heart even though I daily drive my tundra for reliability. I’ll keep you posted what way I go.

A point Chris has made elsewhere: yes, you get more money when you sell a diesel but you pay the same amount more up front when you buy it so do you really come out ahead?

Pretty much. You take identical trucks, similar mileage, one gas and the other diesel, they will be about 8-10k difference.
Shockingly enough, you pay 8-10k more for the diesel.

I’m looking at a couple Z06 Corvettes. So sexy. The black one has 756 miles for 51k.
