CarPlay in my 2008 Tundra

I’ve recently purchased a 2008 Tundra limited and would like to upgrade my stereo to include CarPlay.
I’m not a huge audiophile and listen to a lot of baseball, podcasts and occasionally some music.

I’m not interested in upgrading the amp, speakers or sub, just the head unit itself.


Most important factor I think is wireless connection of phone to head unit.

I am a complete novice and did some searching here and there and did not find anything super recent on this kind of change.

Any info would help.

Put your truck in and find a head unit with Carplay. Aux input works but Carplay/Android Auto is definitely an upgrade.

 

You are limited with the age of the oem unit and what it’s capable of. As of now I don’t know of anything that will allow you to add video inputs to the oem Navi unit. CarPlay for sure isn’t an option.
You can use the aux Input, find some sort of Chinese “add on” that’s a gamble or change the radio. Personally I’d keep the oem radio and use the aux.
I have the Alpine X009 in my 08. No CarPlay , but will do everything you currently have. Exclusion is I can stream Bluetooth.

If you want to stream Bluetooth only that’s a simple dongle to the aux port

 

I recently decided I wanted to add CarPlay in my car. I had an aftermarket pioneer double don already and found that this one for the same harness I already had installed so it was a simple swap

haven’t had any issues with it and added a wireless adapter for about $80 off Amazon so that I don’t have to plug the phone in everytime.

 

I just picked up a 2019 SR and understand where you're coming from on the better head unit functionality desires.
In general, Crutchfield is an excellent resource for learning what's needed for the new headunits for your specific truck and this forum, too. They are especially helpful with any conversion harnesses. (I usually look up the suggested products on Google and Amazon to look over alternative similar products just for options before pulling the trigger.)
For me, the Pioneer unit mentioned is an example of a good option. I do lots of sports and podcasts, too, and still enjoy the tunage sounding decent. You can also swap out speakers easily. I suggest that along with any new head unit and you'll have far better sound even without need to install new amps.
I've had a fair number of car stereo stuff in the past and am trying to stay composed on my new-to-me blank slate of a truck so probably pretty close to what you describe in wants. With 2 kids in college and 2 more about to go in, competing budget priorities are a daily "blessing".

 

If you can be patient (shipping directly from China wait approx 2 months) here’s my recommendation it is a really solid unit. Price/features/quality is unbeatable in comparison to the $1000 plus domestic units available here.

To get carplay to work w/ this unit you'll need to download the AutoKit app to the head unit and purchase a carplay adapter, I used (which works wired and wireless): https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08G1F11GP?ie=UTF8

 

I have a similar version of this, but mine came built in with wireless CarPlay. The unit ran around $550 or so.

There are a few threads in here for the Dasaita or Joying radio, I have the Dasaita.

I haven’t figured out how to screen mirror yet, which I think is what your wanting to do as well? I think it can be done, I just have to turn off wireless CarPlay to do it.

 

Why screen mirror when you can turn on your phone’s hotspot and let the radio wifi connect to it? That way you don’t need to mirror your phone. Your radio is your phone, download all the same apps on your phone to the android radio and you’re set.

 

That would work too! I unfortunately have been unable to do this as I’m getting an error when trying to hit spot my phone.

It’s a security authorization error or something on the radio. I have an iPhone.

Someone in this thread mentions the reason why, some have had luck and others haven’t.

 

That’s very strange. What did the manufacturer say bout it?
When i had the joying unit i never had any error msg like that. turn on hotspot on phone and radio connects and off to the races.

 

I haven’t reached out to Dasaita. I haven’t really spent enough time in truck to worry about it. CarPlay does about everything I need at the moment.

 

Here is what someone mentioned in another thread about my situation.

failure to connect is supposedly an issue with phone hotspot/wifi using WPA3 security setting for the password. you can either try a firmware update or manually input your wifi/hotspot ssid and password but set the security to WPA2. some people have had success with it, some haven't
