Ok, let me preface this by saying it's already been a long week and I'm still sleep deprived and at work, so cut me a bit of slack on the hairbrained line of thinking. :p

Discussions throughout the forum about V8 vs V6 and how many gears a transmission should have sparked my addled brain into a fun bit of curiosity. Would something like a turbo or supercharged V8 with a really high gear count manual transmission be viable as a tow rig? I mean lots of gears, like what we see in a semi. Maybe have a standard 4 speed H pattern with a reverse and a low gear, and only have the high range split for better highway efficiency? 12 speed on a gasser V8... not sure it going all the way up to a full split 18 gear set up would be worth the complexity, but 12 doesn't seem bad.

Less than ideal for anything but a tow rig, or viable for other things as well? The roll decks that I drove for a couple years had to get to some off road places to place cell towers and such, so it might be an allrounder capable set up, but I'm not mechanical enough to say. Would it only work with a diesel because of the extra torque, or could this be done on a V8?

@GNTundra @1lowlife @ColoradoTJ I know you guys have the semi experience and know way more than I do about these from a mechanical standpoint. @empty_lord @Tundra2 @papasmurf @bmf4069 I know you guys have mechanical aptitude and the grit to puzzle out what issues this kind of Frankenstein Monster might have. Tag anyone else in on this that you think could make it a fun discussion.

Poke holes in my umbrella and rain on my parade. I can take it.

I would hate having that many gears and sitting in traffic or merging onto a highway.

It's not actually that bad. Drove the roll deck with an 18 speed in SLC many times. Plus, the lower gears generally work like a regular stick shift, and if you're not loaded max you don't have to split. It'd basically be an 8 speed manual for your day to day.

Good to know I'm not the only one that thinks it'd be a fun rig. :D

Something like the ZF 6 spd in the TD Ford or nv5400 in the TD dodge would be cool. Super low 1st gear so it's basically a 5 spd with a granny gear. But it wouldn't work with a gas motor. Gearing is all wrong.

I'm not even shade tree mechanic level, so what about the gearing couldn't be adjusted for a production gasser to pull something like this off? Is the the lesser torque at the low end compared to a diesel? I'm really just spit balling and having fun with the idea, but curious about what challenges would need to be overcome for a manufacturer to produce something like this.

For those 2 I mentioned it's made for a diesel, so the gears drags out a little long for a gas motor. It works, but I wouldn't call it ideal.

Ah, so it was specific to those transmission/engine setups. Then, theoretically, a manual transmission with more gears could be made for a gas application, then? I'm meaning if a manufacturer were to pursue it, there's nothing that shuts down the option immediately?

What challenges? Finding enough customers to buy it.

For sure. People these days can't drive a regular stick. Add a splitter and their heads will explode. Setting aside marketability, are there any fundamental mechanical challenges that would make it either A) too difficult to work out from a manufacturing standpoint or B) too mechanically unreliable to be a viable mode of transport?

There are many transmissions like the ZF that are used behind multiple engines with different power/torque curves. The difference is the rear end ratio.
