I got my limited with the 12 speaker JBL system a few weeks ago and wanted to hear what everyone else thought. I’ve driven at least 3 or 4 Toyota vehicles that had JBL systems in them, and I never felt like they were worth a shit.

I searched a bit before getting my truck and didn’t find any real life opinions, so this is for future owners buying and building their trucks with the option.

I’m not super into the car stereo world and don’t have the most professional opinion, but DAMN. This system blows any other JBL I’ve heard out of the water. Sounds better than my wife’s old tacoma with a 1200$ sub added to it. Now she’s driving an Audi A4 with a B&O sound system, and although the Audi is little sharper, JBL is not far off.

    What’s your opinion on it?

I sold an '18 Limited to purchase a '22, and yes, the new JBL is FAR superior to the JBL in the last gen. When I first purchased the '18, I thought that I had overlooked a setting somewhere or something was wrong with it because of how crappy it was. I was going to go with the OEM Audio plus system had I not sold it.

Night and day! And even the Tacoma system was better than the 2.5 gen.

Better than before, 100%. Still sucks however! I ordered new JL for the dash and doors. Waiting on TTunes to come out with a new sub box, I kept my JL subs from my 2017.

I'm coming from a Volvo with the Bowers and Wilkins system which is widely regarded as one of the best factory in car systems you can get and I was pleasantly surprised by the JBL, especially after hearing all the negative reviews from previous gens. I even budgeted for upgrades as soon as I ordered my truck but have decided they it isn't necessary.

Very pleased so far, especially after tweaking a few things.

As you pointed out, the subs are kinda meh, overpowering by default. I wish there was a quicker way to switch sound profiles or EQ settings but most cars don't have that either so I didn't really expect it.

    I'm in a rental 2021 Tacoma.
The audio system sounds pretty good and it isn't even JBL.

Glad to hear the Gen 3s upped their game on the audio.

I have a 2018 Tundra Limited and I was disappointed in the sound. I went to the Equalizer settings and I adjusted them all the way up (Bass couldn't handle all the way) and I also adjusted the sound to be front oriented. It sounds a lot better now. It is still not sounding the way it should sound for a premium sound system. My wife just bought a 2022 Camry XLE with the new JBL premium sound system in it and it sounds killer, way better than mine.

Im coming from a 2014 Tacoma with 7 speaker JBL, to a 21 Tundra with JBL with 12 speaker JBL. Wow is the Tundra way worse! What did they change on the 22? Is it just the amp putting out more wattage? Can 22 components be swapped into a 21?

Can you share a photo of your dash to what you set your EQ too? Just for shits and giggles to try it. I don’t know how to mess with that, I just turn the volume up and drive really fast .

This is regarding the 22’ trucks. I think everyone knows the 2.5 gen is lacking in the audio department by now haha.

Wouldn’t have the answer to that. Maybe @Roman would know??

I am also a bit underwhelmed. Maybe it’s the eq settings. Not easy to toy while I’m driving and actually thinking about it.

Or maybe I wouldn’t know what a good sound system was if it hit me in the gut.

You’d need to jump in some of the older vehicles to appreciate it if you don’t have any experience with those ones. Everything can always be better, but good enough to leave alone is great.

I got the OEM plus system for my 21 Pro and it made a significant difference and you get to keep the stock head unit. I have the double cab version.

I wouldn't even attempt that. There are far better aftermarket options for speakers/amps out there that are cheaper too.

My 2022 1794 is a light year ahead of the 2019 platinum I had, only weirdness for me is getting used to what Sounds like the sub is under the dash, sound feels very forward oriented on factory settings.

I'm a far cry from an audiophile so my opinion is that of a layman. My recent trucks have been a '19 Ram 1500 Limited and a '19 Nissan Titan Plat. Reserve. In comparison, the '22 Tundra sounds better than both, but still doesn't blow my socks off. Honestly, I was expecting it to be better with all the hype pre-release.

all JBL systems across all models before the 2.5 gen tundra were better. heck my 2014 4runner and 2016 tacoma sounded better than the 2018 tundra JBL.

there is a YT video where a person somewhat does a review of the 2022 JBL.

I currently have a factory Bose in my car with a sub. It is so good that I think it may have ruined me for the future.

My wife drives 2017 Platinum Highlander and the JBL system SUCKS! The JBL in my Platinum Tundra (Built May 12- still waiting for delivery) has me concerned, but it is good to see that a number of you say it's much better. I don't necessarily require professional level sound, but I do expect it to be pretty damn good in a $65,000 truck. One of the 12 speakers is a sub, so I'm betting the bass will be much better. We'll see. I will revisit this thread with an update, if my truck ever gets here.

My wife said she can hear me coming 2 blocks away. We live on a quiet commercial street, but still. And thats with the bass halfway.

100%. The granularity of moving the sound "backward" is weird too - you go from "too far forward" to "too far backward" and nothing in between.

I feel like the tweeters are great, the bass is a bit muddy, and overall volume isn't excellent, but it's the best stereo I've had in a car (not saying much). I'll be doing some upgrades along the way, but it's not urgent.

Oh, and the drivers' side rattle that some experience and fix with removing the foam in the drivers door handle - that came and left for me, so no fix needed yet.

I think its great for a factory system and on par with anything else. Sound placement is a little forward like some people have said.

I added a little sound deadening to the door and I think its made it even better. It makes the base sound much more solid since a lot of it seems to come from the front doors.

I seem to remember seeing a picture or video somewhere showing the sub behind the back of the rear seat on the driver's side.

Can you provide a list of the components and what clips you used to attached the aftermarket speakers to factory wiring?

JBL wins as the b&o would really flatten the bass when the volume was up higher.
You'll never get a factory to be the one, but I can make all the mirrors shake and being over 55 yrs young I giggle as I used to have a duel 10 inch Kicker box in my 88 Mustang.
Even the old lady was loving it! "Fucking door is shaking and I feel the bass" lol

I’ve had all kinds of systems in my 45 years and the JBL is pretty good for factory. Turn off surround sound and tweak your settings and it’s good to go! Your content makes a big difference. Some Sirrus channels sound perfect and some stuff sounds flat. Forgive my old ass but I miss my CD’s. But I do love the convenience of bluetooth and Carplay! Progress!

People underestimate the importance of the source. I have some songs on my Ipod that sound like crap and I have some songs on my Ipod that really bring the JBL system to life. Feed it the right music and the JBL system is really really good. My old 2013 Platinum sounded like crap no matter what you fed it.
