I am looking for a locking gas cap that do not throw a code on the truck. I brought a gascap on Amazon and it threw the CEL code. What is everyone using?

When you lock your doors, it should lock the door covering the gas cap. I haven't checked mine, but most new vehicles are like that.

Unfortunately, the 2022 Tundra do not do that. Even with the vehicle locked, the door to cover the has cap can still be open.

Wow, that seems like a huge miss by Toyota. I wonder if that's on all trims or not.

That's true for my 1794... no locking mechanism on the door.

For some reason, you have to step up to the TRD Pro or the Capstone to get a locking fuel door. I guess Toyota thinks that only the $100k trucks will have their fuel stolen?

It not even an available option on any trim below the TRD Pro or the Capstone. :notsure:

That's flat out stupid. Another huge miss on Toyotas part. It should be standard on every trim level. These trucks are too damn expensive to leave out such a basic feature. Time to see if it can be added...

While I am admitted Toyota fanboy...I totally agree here. Some of the small cost cutting decisions are strange on the 3rd Gen. Auto-dimming mirrors and HomeLink being tied to expensive option packages, and the locking fuel door available only on higher trims. Things like that kind of make me shake my head. I have a very basic 2012 SR5 4Runner and even that model came with HomeLink. lol.

It just doesn't make sense to me. They drove the prices way up for the 3rd gen, but then cut some of the almost necessary basic features. This is my first Toyota, and the impression I use to have of them is starting to fade.

I was under the impression that the popular thing now days is drilling into the tanks. And as far as the locking fuel door, those things are cheap plastic and probably wouldn't do much to stop someone that really wants in there.

Has anyone tried to siphon fuel out of their tundra because most new vehicles won’t let a hose go into the tank and they don’t need to add a locking door feature.

They have their place. A locking cap is good for is keeping a crazy ex from dumping a couple bottles of coke down the tube.

I'm not worry about people siphoning gas out of the truck. They can simply drill a hole in the gas tank and steal my gas that way. I am more worry about people opening the gas cap and pouring sugar, etc. in my truck. There are lots of teenage doing stupid "challenges" now a days and it won't surprise me if that becomes another "challenges".

I mean, if that possibility is factoring into your purchasing decisions, that is something..;) I think in their place I would just drive an old clapped out dodge with expensive cameras built into it. Let’r buck lady/gent! The video just beamed straight to my smartphone will make great evidence at the hearing. Then, and only then, here we go 1794!

This thread has been quiet for a while. I've had the issue where the fuel door pops open whenever I go through a car wash. Super annoying...

I am sure eventually someone will come out with one that works. I have tried 3 so far (one from Amazon, one from Ebay and one from a local parts store, which was the popular “Stant” name brand and they all thru the error code, but as soon as you put the original gas cap back on the code clears.

I am not worried about the gas stealing as much as I am about some idiot pouring bad stuff into the gas tank to ruin your engine. I had someone close to me last year that spent almost $100k on a new vehicle and went to a shopping center, no cameras caught his parking spot & lesson learned, with his family and some a#%hole poured sugar down his non locking gas cap (didn’t find out it was sugar until it had to get towed to the dealer and they discovered the issue) and when they left immediately got error codes and vehicle shut off. He had no clue what was wrong on his new 2 week old vehicle so towed to dealer. They wouldn’t warranty it, but luckily he had good insurance and filed comprehensive claim and they paid for new engine/tank/fuel system/etc. it was crazy expensive I think he said his insurance paid like $20k!! I loathe people who mess with other’s property. If it ain’t yours leave it the heck alone!!! .:quickdraw:

Probably does not occur that often at all. I only know of the one time with someone I knew but I wouldn’t want to be that one person as it was a pain in the arse to get handled/fixed. Between the dealership and the insurance company pointing fingers at each other on who needed to cover the costs and not able to get replacement parts easily (lots of parts where still on back order) it took 3 plus months to get the vehicle back repaired and the insurance only covered 30 days of rental. Lot more issues, but I’m sure you get the gist. It was a nightmare for them and just because someone was hateful enough to pour sugar down their gas tank. Why people are so mean/hateful is a sign of the times. I hate to say it but the world just is not like it was when I was a kid many years ago. Back then we never even locked our cars or house doors, ever. Remember going out as a teenager and coming home for curfew at midnight and just walking in the door as never locked and then I left it unlocked too. Today my own home is locked 24/7, have an alarm with cameras everywhere, etc. Sorry this is a pet peeve of mine, if it’s not yours leave it the heck alone. People work hard for their possessions. Some just don’t care.

Just wanted to make a correction. After I posted the above, I texted the person that happened to and was surprised they said it wasn’t the sugar that caused all the damage to the engine and injectors/etc, it was the water they also poured in it. Apparently someone poured water and sugar in their gas tank. Guess they wanted to make sure the sugar went down and used water which ended up being the real issue. The sugar apparently sank to the bottom of the gas tank and why that had to be changed, but the major issues was from water. Still the point of some a#%hole causing damage to someone else’s property.

I have a $12 ($18 now due to inflation) Stant locking cap for my '16 if the sizes are still the same. No issues so far.

I don't see any reason for Toyota changing the design but who knows. If you go to their site or Amazon it tells you if it fits 2022 or not.
