Took my boys on a little road trip this past week with the TRD Pro. Wanted to see what this truck could do stock. First unplanned even was the tide being so high. I stopped coming down here years ago. And at first approach and paying the ocean tide was damn near up the ramp. Leaving no path except to drive on the powdery soft pack. Drove into the soft packed sand. Quickly aired down and was off. Took the truck into the dunes. Hoping to not get stuck. Truck and tires performed better than expected. I just didn't feel confident enough to pull anybody out stuck in the muck. Truck performed better than expected. Toyed around with no problems.

That is is an awesome experience with your family. How much did you have to air down? I am planning on being at the dunes next month. Thanks

In my experience at Pismo beach with a 2wd truck in the past, was it all depends on the rim size tire size and weight of the vehicle. My 2wd regular cab short bed ram with 20 inch wheels seem to like to be air down to 15 to 20 PSI to get a nice float. You're trying to broaden the footprint. Just make note that now that you are aired down you run the risk of popping a bead on the tire if you take turns too hard. I had no problems cruising around in the soft sand with that truck but I didn't want to risk going back into the dunes with it. But once you get rolling and the rest is pretty easy. I always made sure I stopped in a good spot where I could get going again. Now with the tundra being a heavier vehicle but also having 4 x 4 I would think 20 PSI is a good place to start. No my buddy had an old 85 jeep with the V8 conversion and it was very light also being on mud terrain 35 inch tires we air down to around 8-12 psi before it would even start to bulge. I watched a lot of people make the mistake of blooming airing down the rear tires of their trucks and the front tires with just knife into the sand and they would get stuck. Typically I'm looking for the same amount of bulge in front and rear so the front I wouldn't air down quite as much as the rear. I'm not an expert but I have been to Pismo Beach many times and this formula worked for me. Hope that helps.

I aired down to about 23lbs. I still wanted to drive around town. I could have gone lower but didn't want to risk busting a bead

@fjorge2323 what @15whtrd said should get you through! I’ve driven a stock 2017 TRD 2wd with stock Michelin tires, aired down, all over Anza Borrego sand, and did fine.

Additional hints are: keep distance in front of you so you don’t have to make sudden stops... keeping the tires moving through anything soft avoids getting stuck. Also, when you have a planned stopped, in addition to looking for former ground, let up on the gas and slow without using much brake; if you brake to stop, that build-up of sand in front of your tires can be an obstacle to getting moving again.

Last time I took mine to the dunes was about 2011. It was stock height and highway tires towing a 34 foot trailer. So its been a while lol.......so let's see how it does now.
