Completely true but the newer 38 gal tanks have had a rash of stuck roll over valves.

Overfilling can cause this too, the charcoal gets wet and needs to dry out before all works as it should again.

    Ask me how I know....

My new to me 2016 w/ 38 gal tank did this upon my first time getting gas. Nozzle kept clicking off immediately. Couldn't get it to fill. I moved the nozzle around to different positions. No dice. Finally I pushed the nozzle into the fill neck as far as it would go and tried again. Bingo. Truck fueled up normally then. Maybe it was just a fluke, but hopefully that continues to work as I have NO warranty.

2020 SR5 Double Cab 4x4 with the 38 gallon tank and mine just started having this problem around 24,900 miles. I can't seem to get more than about $1.00 worth in at a time before the nozzle clicks and I have to pull the handle again. This has happened the last 4 - 5 gas stations I've went to. Is there supposed to be a flap in the filler neck? I was starting to wonder if it's broke off and down in the filler neck tube causing the blockage? Going to try to get it to the stealership soon for the 25k service and hope they can figure it out and that it's under warranty.

No flap in the filler neck. As stated previously in the thread, topping off can cause this issue, and the usual culprit is a stuck rollover valve. Some have been able to fix it themselves, and others have had new tanks installed because of it. Either way, once it's fixed, make sure you aren't topping off your tank to reduce the chances of it happening again.

Given the low mileage on your truck I'd guess the roll over valve is stuck. Best to see if the dealer will take care of it under warranty. If not, you can remove the fill tube and poke it open with a long screwdriver, don't even have to drop the tank. It's not easy but it's possible.

After reading all these threads on filling your tank because it keeps clicking the gas pump … my question is … is it most likely the roll over valve or the charcoal canister and evac valve ? I’m have same issue

With the 38 gal. tank it's 99% more likely to be the roll over valve. You'd have to consistently be "topping" off your tank to create an issue with the charcoal cannister. Then too, I've heard of the cannister drying out after having been a problem.

Could it be the same prob with the 26 gal tank? Not sure what size tank it is?

2016+ has the 38, I'm not sure it's in all trim levels though. Pre 2016, unless retrofitted, is the smaller tank.
The sticky valve issue, as far as I know and have read, is very uncommon in the smaller tank and I'd be much more suspicious of the e-vap cannister.

I got a text from the Stealership that my truck was ready to pick up and parts were on order. When I stopped by to pick it up and ask what parts they ordered he said they're replacing the tank.

I got a 2020 Toyota Tundra Limited, 38 gallon tank and I just started having this same issue. Dealer says the valve is stuck and requires the complete gas tank to be replaced at a cost of ~$3,000:-(

same issue here. I'll be dropping the tank this week to fix the issue. Unfortunately a new tank doesn't address the problem as it can happen again.

My 2016 came with a 26 gallon tank. I swapped for a 38 and had been reading about the rash of stuck rollover valves, so before installing the 38 gallon tank I removed the flapper so it can't ever happen. I just have to make sure I don't roll the truck!

Before putting the fuel pump in, I reached in the fuel pump opening with my arm and grabbed the flapper and yanked it off. I happen to have kind of long arms and I'm not a body builder so I could get in there and reach it that way. Not everyone may be able to.

2020 Tundra with 35229 miles on the clock and this just happened to me today, scheduled into the dealer tomorrow to have them figure out.

Is this a very common issue?

yes if you offroad it seems to be common place. The problem is the dealer will just put a new tank in and the issue can occur again. I lowered the rear of the tank and stuck a pry bar/ long screw driver to dislodge the flapper. No issues ever since. But I do need to pay attention when filling the truck as it could spill some fuel if topping off.

It was so strange, I have no idea what would I do differently to prevent that, since I always stop when the fuel pump clicks off. Hopefully the dealer./toyota covers that within warranty.

now that I think of what you concluded, more offroad tundras have this happen to them, do you think when vehicle is on an incline with full tank of gas, the gas would be filled at the rear/lower end of the truck and would trigger the stupid rollover valve then?

That’s possible or I would also say sloshing around of fuel hitting the valve closed and making it stuck. It happened to me right after hitting a whoop section a few times. But like I said the sloshing of fuel wedging it closed I suspect makes it happen

I would not mind to learn how you dislodge the flapper in detail and which/where is the flapper. If dislodged, is there chance the fuel can be leaked out of the gas tank?

Nope only time it would leak is on fill up as mentioned or a rollover but the cap shouldn't leak I believe. Basically you need to lower the tank enough to undo the filler neck on the tank side and use a mirror to see into the tank and take a pry bar to the flapper valve. Im sure an in-depth write up might exist.

Fortunately I read about this problem before replacing the 26 gallon tank with a 38 in mine and I removed the flapper before installing it.
