I'd like to change the cigarette lighter socket in the back of the center console to a hella style plug for a fridge. Can I just pull the old socket and replace, or will the wiring be insufficient?

What's the fridge power draw? I think the outlet is only rated for 12V.

its a 12v... this is from their paperwork:
This Fridge can accept a DC voltage ranging from 9.6V to 31.5V, as well as an AC voltage range from 85V to 265V. The 12Vdc power input is protected with a 15A automotive blade fuse.

Trying to dust this off. Looking for a way to add, I suppose, or replace the rear cig socket with a hella style plug.

Is this possible? Is this something an average person can do or should I take it somewhere?

How many watts or amps does it pull.

The factory cigarette lighter/power port on the rear console in on a 15A circuit.

A user on the forums just said he plugged a portable air compressor into his that could pull 30A twice the recommend amount. He ended up melting some of the wiring together.

The amount of power in watts or max amp on the label of the fridge is key here. Unfortunately fridges consume large amount of electricity when kicking on

This... Its the same reason I cant use the microwave and air conditioner in my travel trailer at the same time. Itll power them running but the a/c draws the full 30 amps on start up

Fair enough... I think the fridge I have draws an average of 27 amps... So then the next question is, what does it look like to wire in a a completely new plug? What does it take?

Run a line from the battery with an inline fuse (i prefer a breaker style) to wherever you want the plug. pretty straight forward just size your wire correctly.

I would run a power wire from the battery to a relay. Have a large fuse on this power wire within 1 ft of the battery.

Then run another power wire to the socket for the fridge from the relay.

Use a smaller gauge wire to “trigger” / close the relay when the key is on

30 amps pulling on the battery while the truck is turned off won’t last long. Hence why the relay will make it on be powered when key on only.

You could also just wire in a small power inverter instead of the relay. If done right it would operate in a similar manner.

What make/model fridge? 27A for a 12v fridge seems awfully high. Is that an average for ah pulled over a 24 hour period maybe?

You should be good with a 15A circuit (it is what they recommend for the circuit). The current NL fridge/freezers are very low amp draw. I have a NL dual control fridge freezer and never saw more than mid-2amp draw in my testing when I got it.

    Some links:

If you haven't used your NL yet, I think you will really like it. We love ours!
