19 yo daughter, going camping without me for first time

No, she's not taking the Tundra. I've been taking my daughters camping since my oldest was about 4 yo. And like most here, I'm uber prepared (former military and I hunt). Between tools, lights, water/shower, cots, extra blankets and batteries, you name it, I carry it. I even changed out ignition coils and cooling hoses on my old Landcruiser...on the trail with them. I carry enough tools to just about take an entire car apart.

She's camping in an actual campground with three friends (two cars - her RAV and friend's Accord). It's a large campground, and she's likely to be surrounded by other campers. However, I've pulled out everything she'll need, including bear spray. Desert environment so camelback and extra water will be a must. Having her take the EZ up so that they have some shade during the day.

Camp ground is a good 3 hrs away from home. Anyone else have anxiety when their teen went camping without you for the first time?

 

My daughter is doing the same and IS taking the Tundra. One of the reasons she went to Sedona with me in order to get practice with all the gear. She can handle it all and is very confident in her abilities. Good for the young ones to get out and enjoy the world.

 

Yes, and it doesn't get easier. Even peeks more when there will be camping with "boys".

My daughter wasted no time after she hit 18 getting the heck out of the house and away from our control. Super independent and hard headed as hell. She made some mistakes (just like her old man) but got back on the right path and is doing great 20 years later.

I understand your apprehension. It sounds like your kid has a good head and you did a great job and have a good relationship.

 

We just did the best we could & prayed like hell the kids did not end up on drugs or in jail. I understand your apprehension but it sounds like you spent oodles of time with her during the formative years & a lot of you has rubbed off on her. I bet she can handle what comes her way.

 

In these days how can you help but feel uneasy/hesitant. Like stated above you hope you raised them right and hope they have enough common sense and have learned not to put themselves into certain situations. Wish em luck and hope they have a good safe trip!!

Show her how to set up a trip wire around her camping area, or at least on the zipper of her tent/sleeping bag. Im including a link at the end to the device I have tested out. Its not the easiest to trigger, but its super loud. Also, it comes with a large clip she can have on her purse and just pull if she feels threatened. My gf carries one on her purse when she goes places.

My sweetie is almost 4 and we have already been camping a few times and she loves it. I cant even imagine yet (probably dont want to) how i would feel in about 10 years when she wants to do stuff without me. All i can do is work on my aim and hope i steered her right. Oh, and maybe get a locating chip embedded on her somehow while she is too young to remember so I can track her for the rest of her life......kidding, but not really.

 

Dude, my daughter is 4 weeks old. Posts like this are what make me more determined than ever to never let her out of my yard.

 

I can't imagine... I'm sure you've already thought about this, but when out having fun, one combination that can turn a simple trail hike into a rescue operation is the combo of dry desert heat, altitude, activity, and liquor the day of or night before... Make sure you remind them/her about hydration especially when the above factors are involved.

 

How many boys will be there?
