Today I installed the Toyota Dashcam for my 2022 Tundra (PT949-34220). I ordered it online and paid $349.65 plus shipping for $378.40 delivered to my door. I liked the idea of an integrated system.

I watched this video (see below) to give me some assistance and courage (to take apart things in my new truck). It took me some additional time, probably an hour. I know some people have said they installed this camera in 15 minutes.

I followed the instructions and ran into two problems on page 5 (see link below). First, when I lined up the paper template (figure 4-5), I had it a little too high. This created some extra work on step 8 (c-f) as I had to work part of the Dashcam wire extension cover into the headliner.

The next issue I encountered was the removal of the Sun Visor Hook (Figure 5-1). It took a lot more force than I expected to turn the Sun Visor Hook Anti-clockwise. The base came out quickly with a set of needle-nose pliers as described in the instruction manual. I did not realize that I damaged the Sun Visor Hook or the base until I re-installed the Hook. It remains functional but pops out 1/4-1/2 inch when the visor is engaged in the hook. I plan to order a new Sun Visor Hook and base once I find a part number.

Finally, the Removal of the Roof map Light Console took more force than I expected. I used tools from a Trim and Molding toolset (see link below) to remove the console. I used the two tools on the right of the picture, placing them between the console and headliner. Once I used enough force to dislodge the console, the entire thing came flying. I was able to catch it, but it would have been nice to have someone spot the console as it released from the headliner.

Of note, I did not disconnect the console as it was out of the way on the passenger side while I was working on the driver's side of the opening.

Finally, on page 7 of the Toyota instruction manual, they state to (f) Disengage the wire harness clip. I could not find a way to disengage the clip but was quickly able to connect the end from the dashcam into the harness. I had to connect by feel as the pre-wire harness is facing away from you, towards the front of the truck.

Once everything was put back together, and I hooked the battery up, the dashcam worked right away. As others have said, I had to turn off Bluetooth on my phone to get my iPhone to connect to the camera. It takes about 2 minutes to download a 2-minute clip to my phone.

The installation was a bit more complicated than I had hoped, but the camera worked the first time!

I also purchased the dash cam and installed it myself. While I didn't seem to have as much trouble as you, I can provide some of my experience:
    - I removed the visor clip, but turns out I didn't need to
    - The template is a joke. I thought I had it lined up perfectly, but now my dash cam looks crooked
Mine may be too high as the part that goes into the headliner is a tiny bit misaligned
    - I thought I was going to break the overhead console but it flew out just like you said
    - I also connected the wire by feel and didn't bother to zip-tie it above

As far as the camera itself goes, it's fine. We're paying a premium for it to be "integrated" but if I ever want to look at video I'm going to pull the SD card instead of messing with the app/wifi.

I ordered a SanDisk high-endurance 128GB microSD card to replace the bundled 16GB and it works great.
Not sure how long it will record, but should be enough for long road trips.

Glad to read this. I wondered if the visor clip really needed to be removed. My camera should be here this week

That is a great point that the visor clip probably does not need to be removed. Would at least reduce the chance of breaking it.

Another thing with the installation of the base plate. I would ensure that the lower points of the plate are even with the lower edge of the dotted portion of the windshield as seen in figure 8-6 below.

When you disconnected/reconnected your battery, did you have to recreate your profile and re-program your favorites and such?

I would be interested in what you have to say about the install and use. Mine is sitting in my garage for a free few hours to install. My only worry is breaking the overhead console.

Installed the camera this evening. Took probably 20 minutes. I did remove the visor holder. Pulled down the upper console and half of one of the red clips broke. It went back up fine and looks like it all came this way. Still figuring out how to use the camera.

I didn't bother disconnecting the battery in my install. No issues.

Maybe I just haven't figured it out but I'm pretty disappointed I cannot connect to the camera from inside my office or home...am I not doing something correct? I have to be in the truck in order to get the wifi to connect to the camera and even then it wouldn't keep the connection.

I would think that would be the case or else anyone would be able to hack into it. I'm also wondering if the truck needs to be on in order for it to have power and a signal.

You are probably correct. You have to set up a pin to protect others from accessing it, but all things are hackable I guess. I know it keeps power as it will come on if it detects a shock to the truck while parked and it records after you shut if off and walk away. I just had assumed you would be able to access the recorded files remotely and not while in the truck. Taking a road trip tomorrow, so we will see what/how it does.

I installed mine yesterday afternoon, and was a quick and fairly simple install. I said screw it with the template. I just couldn't trust it, or maybe myself using it. I just attached the mounting plate to the camera and lined everything up, and affixed it to the windshield. Worked out pretty well. I also did not disconnect the negative terminal and had no issues. Disconnecting the negative terminal seems to be a default instruction by Toyota when dealing with anything electrical/electronic. Just a generic safety precaution.

The biggest issue I had was when I connected WIFI to the camera, it would keep kicking me off and defaulting back to my home router. Got it done though. And as far as connecting remotely, I would assume you would need to utilize the hot spot in the truck somehow, but my guess is that the ignition/accessory would need to be on to accomplish this. Doesn't seem possible as things sit now, but maybe there could be a hack through the Toyota app? But with that, the camera is not bluetooth capable, so it might have to be hardwired into the infotainment for remote access, but that would really be a complicated thing to accomplish.

I did not, but it took turning on and off the truck a few times to re-establish the sync.

A few hints with the wifi connection.
I did this while the truck was running.

I recommend turning off Bluetooth on your iphone. Push the wi-fi button on your camera for 2 seconds. The camera will beep.

Open the settings and find the Toyota Dashcam in the Wifi networks and connect. You should be able to open the Toyota dashcam app and have a live view or download images. You are basically creating a network that your phone and camera share.

It takes almost 2 minutes to download a 2-minute clip to my iPhone 13 Pro Max, pretty slow.

Once you get your dashcams working you will be ready to capture the craziness out there. This from an aftermarket cam in my Tacoma a couple days ago:

It would seem it shuts up once you get it to cooperate and connect to your phone. But like others have said, its a bear to get it to initially cooperate.

I have caught some crazy stuff on the dashcam in the past. Instead of telling people "you should have seen it", now you can show them. I also like with the OEM dashcam that a red light blinks that is visible from the front to let people know it is recording (when it is in parking mode).

I must have been lucky or just figured it out up front but I've had no issues working with the Toyota Dash cam. I can connect easily when needed and it works as advertised.

Received mine from Olathe Toyota in Olathe KS. It was $100 less than I could find it in the St Louis area. I checked several dealer parts departments. I think I'm going to let my local dealer install it for me. That way if they screw it up it's on them.

Geesh..sadly thats not that unusual to see wild things on Rt. 15! I am right across river in Lucketts and since moving here a little over a year ago, starting to think 81 is almost less dangerous!! (Installing this cam today or tomorrow).

Thanks to @Maharisc making the adapter I was able to use my Garmin mini I had in my Tacoma. Plugs right in and looks super clean in my opinion. I slid the cord through the pre-made hole in the liner above the rear view mirror.

    Looks great!

Can anyone else help me understand what the dark area on the right side of the rear view mirror is? It looks like a blacked out section perfect for mounting a larger dashcam but seems odd that is only on one side

I contacted Dongar Technologies and gave Kevin a heads up on this need, Kevin is now providing this device. I still have 6 available @$25(Shipped)and will not make anymore as I didn't want to make a business out of this.

I was able to install mine easy enough, but when I go to the app to connect to the dash cam it is asking for a wifi password. I have tried the serial number of the device, 12345678, etc but nothing seems to work. Anyone else having this issue or know a solution? Thanks in advance!

Never mind - I found the user manual online (which I hadn't received). The code is 1234567890 for anyone who finds this and needs it!
