Unfortunately (not going to say why-politics) but right now that would probably work.

 

I honestly tried to join the Marines back in 2007. I don't remember all the details now, but something about not taking foreign nationals or some quota cap reached. Can't remember. Being Canadian ended up making is impossible at the time.

I'm way too old and out of shape now. LOL

I'm old now with a beer gut. Once a Marine always a Marine.....wait....I had a good friend with the Canadian military back in 79 here at the now defunct Lowry AFB. He was sent here for Intel school. He was by himself. Staff Sgt. Liked us Marines. We partied a lot. He'd usually pay. He got paid more than us. You might want to check that out.

True story incoming. I was over in Germany doing the broadcaster thing for about 6 or 8 months and I was the only Private. I was doing radio and anchoring the evening news and a bunch of other stuff. They finally sent another Private to help out the station. He was direct from training, just like I was, and his last name was Brown. He was pretty worthless and out of shape. Hell, he used to go to the bar on base and try to tell people he was me to try to score some free drinks or something (I had a popular radio show - it was a captive audience so I never read much into it).

Anyway, he was super out of shape and couldn't pass a PT test. Broadcasting school was small and word got to us that his nickname was "Doo Doo Brown." Apparently, on his final PT test to get out of Advanced Training, he ran so hard that when he finished, he shit his pants. The really sad thing was that he still didn't make his time. The Drill Sergeant felt so bad, they passed him anyway.

My sergeants finally bounced him out on a fat boy discharge. The morning when he was supposed to fly back to the states, I went over to his room (I had a room, bathroom in-between that connected to his room). I walked over there to say bye and the dude flops to the floor, starts foaming at the mouth, and begins to seize. We shared the barracks with some medical guys - I turned his head to the side, propped his legs up, and ran to the door yelling for some help. This dude comes running in and starts yelling at me "What'd you guys take last night?!" Apparently Private Brown had been doing drugs. I never hung out with him after work, I had enough of him at work.

He ends up going to the hospital and my Sergeants were scrambling to get him released so he could make his flight (which he ultimately did) because they didn't want him sticking around any longer than possible.

Long story short. Forget the Marines. Go join the Army and if you can't pass the PT tests, shit your pants. That's my advice for you.

 

Yeah, I was pretty fortunate in my unplanned career choice. I've ridden many small craft, gone to test depth on several submarines. Met some awesome special forces warriors. Seen the pyramids, had Singapore slings from the raffles hotel, was able to bring my wife and kids to HI a few times, hiked Mt Rainer. A year in Scotland was nice, met some good people that are still fiends. Rode the London Eye on a Champaign flight. Japan was good too. NOLA is the only business trip that I repeated for pleasure. Trying to count my blessings while I want to retire and fish right now. That reminds me, caught a short billed spear fish in HI and a few dolphin in Guam.

I just checked the Canadian Forces website. Dang......they will accept you up to 58 years old as long as you complete your training by the time you turn 60! What...the..flying ....F? I'm thinking boot camp isn't quite the same as Marine Corps boot camp up there. Do it. Get through Canadian boot camp and request special MOS. Military Occupational Specialty training only offered here.

Yeah, you won't be going into the combat arms or doing anything fun going in at that age. Mainly supply clerks and other support stuff. My friend has a 56 year old woman in his Basic course, she was going in for something like logistics planning. Basically paperpushing.

The military was a dream of mine at a young age. For a few reasons, it never panned out for me. I'm not really in a position to do it now in my early 30's having just started a family. The paycut alone wouldn't be doable nevermind the time away etc. It's all good. There's other dreams and things to chase now.

 

A Broadcaster, perhaps?
