Not sure if this is the right spot but it seemed closest to what i need. Trying to prep a metal bumper for paint. Did all my welding and grinding, but.my question is do i need to step up flap discs in grit just like sand paper? I threw a coat of primer on to keep it from rusting until i can finish but it also served as a guide coat and i have some high a low spots from the grinder. Guessing since i was using a 40 grit disc step up to 80 then 120 and try again? Should i use bondo as a skim coat as well? Any help is appreciated, painting isnt really my thing

Are you talking about the chrome pieces or an aftermarket bumper? I've not seen good long standing paint on chrome but it is all in the prep.

If you have a few low spots, thin layer of bondo, dry, sand to a smooth finish, prime, paint.

I have some grinder marks that are low spots where i had to make another weld pass and smooth down. And just general grinder swirl. I was using a 40 grit flap disk and a grinding wheel. Should i go over with 80 grit and 120 flap disk, then prime again? Or should i hit it 80 ,120, bondo then 120 again and prime?

My ironworking back ground was structural not ornamental so prepping metal for a fine finish is not something i ever did. Lol

My experience is 180 grit is enough for primer to fill in with a few coats. First coat of primer should be a self etching primer. Napa sells a Martin Senour primer in a spray can. I highly recommend this followed with a 240 grit wet sand.

Will, the work you have done on this bumper is beautiful. Sorry I’m unable to help with the paint issue. My recommendation would be to have it powder coated, which would lead me to ask the shop for their thoughts.
Please post pictures of this when it’s finished and mounted on your truck.

Im trying to keep it simple on paint. I probably wont go the powdercoat route just because when it gets banged up, i want to be able to just rattle can touch up. Im going to be spraying with rustoleum professional gloss black with my hvlp gun, then when it needs touch up rattle can as needed

Flap disc on an angle grinder? I would start flat sanding. You’ll never get it completely flat with a circular grinder. It might look smooth but the waves will come out when it’s painted.

Hit with 80, 120 then a bondo glaze where it needed it and 2 coats hi build primer. Going to sand when dry with 220, then 3rd primer coat , sand agin and then paint

I would suggest using Steel It over the Rustoleum. It is a bit spendy but holds up well and easy to touch up later.
