So like many others here I got free oil changes with my truck, and I took advantage of them. But in the past 40 years I have always done my own oil changes as I started my career at Sears Auto center in 1981. I know how FUBARed some shops can make your car. But it a Toyota at a dealer so I thought it should be ok. Fast forward to today and start to do my own oil change on the Tundra. I own 6 cars and do all my own work, so I am no stranger to oil changes. My home shop is pretty well equipped as well. I go to remove the oil filter using a tool I got at Autozone (yes I know but they had it on the shelf) well it broke, then the strap wrench wouldn't move it, nor would my oil filter pliers. So I filled the engine with 8 qts for now. Not the best plan but I have to have the car ready tomorrow.
Heres what gets me, the front skid plate bolts looked like they have never been removed, and they were tight, this combined with the tight filter housing makes me wonder if they were even doing filter changes at the dealership.
Anyway I ordered the Lisle 61040 tool today I may try it as soon as I get it and if it works I should only loose about a quart of oil.
Is there a metal replacement for that plastic housing?

Yea, there is a metal replacement. Search on Amazon for aluminum tundra filter housing.

I just dealt with this situation the other day. F:censored:ing grease monkey dealer techs need to put away the impact wrench.

Luckily my secret Santa on here had already gotten me the metal housing so I was ready to go after destroying the plastic one.

Yup same. Needed a long breaker bar and cracked the housing removing it after dealers “free” oil change. Replaced it with metal housing and torque to specs. Have to exchange the short inner support one the metal housing for the longer one in our trucks. BL - our forum members routinely note no one will take care of your truck like you will.

Here's the metal replacement part # 15620-31060. Don't forget to swap out the inner tube from the original canister. Good luck.

    Not sure at this point.
Damn Jake! Luckily I had changed mine early on, dealership NEVER changed the filter after about 4 changes. It was on real tight.

If only... I thought I was going to get away without spilling any oil since I already had the Fumoto installed and had the filter housing drain tool. Then by the time I was done cursing out Big Two Toyota's service center, I had forgotten to put anything down for the drippings. It all cleaned up pretty well though.

Stuff like this forced me to start doing my own oil changes. Too much risk of some random idiot ruining engine by forgetting to tighten oil filter or pan bolt.

I was going to let Toyota do the free oil changes. I am thankful guys posted their experiences so I didn’t have to go through that.

I went through the same thing. I knew the dealer was changing the filter because one skid plate bolt was missing and one was not original. Fortunately I had a metal filter cap ready to go. I broke one filter wrench. It was a cheap cast one. I bought a better one. One thing I learned is don't insert your extension on the inside of the filter cap nut. Use a socket on the nut. I had to use a 2' cheater bar and have my neighbor hold my legs. I gave the dealer 0s on the survey and service manager called me. He gave me 2 new skid plate bolts and offered to install them. I said no thanks you all will never touch my truck again. He also offered to replace the filter cap.

I do all my own. Dealer hasn’t touched mine except for the fuel pump recall.

tap it several times with a hammer / wrench and see if that helps. If not, keep fighting the good fight. Wear gloves, I've torn a hole in my hand before trying to get one off.

I gave up and just removed the entire housing. It's like the last person who changed it JB welded it to the housing. No good way to grip that thing without risk of cracking the housing.

I don't use that small drain plug on the oil filter housing. I just remove the housing with a drain pan in place. Works fine.

I’m reluctant to have the dealer do oil changes too. I’ve passed on the 2 free changes. I’ve had them rotate tires, but that is all.

It seemed fine to me as well. Wasn't any messier than normal filter IMO.

The dealer I used can't get those right either. One day after a rotation my TPMS light came on. Door sticker states 46 lbs because I have BFGs. All tires had 30. I was not happy that I had to get the compressor out.

If you get the aluminum filter housing, I'd suggest just taking the part number to the dealership and know you're getting the real deal. Lot of fake/replica stuff on Amazon.

Because of past experience I always use a torque wrench when tightening the filter housing drain plug and the filter housing itself.

The key is to ensure the seller is a Toyota dealer. There are several on Amazon that are bona fide dealers, like Toyota of Miami, Conicelli, etc.

I've seen fake Toyota filters before, but never seen a fake Toyota Aluminum canister. Can anyone here verify they bought one?

I haven't bought a fake, but there are off brand (aftermarket) ones that are often labeled to make them seem like OEM. I'm not aware of anyone finding a fake that is trying to pass as genuine (ie in a Toyota box)

Its less brittle and stronger than the plastic housing, so you stand a better chance of getting it off if over tightened. Additionally the plastic one see to gets stuck more easily, likely due to heat cycles. In a nut shell, it just reduces the chance of problems.

Same experience here when I did the first oil change on CPO RAV4 that we got for my daughter. One of the plastic tabs broke on the housing so ordered aluminum one for it and changed it with next oil change.

I still have one free toyota oil change, scheduled for 5/28/22 and I have the metal housing. So in a few months when I do the first one myself, I'll be replacing it with the alum one. If the plastic OEM one is still useable, I'll save it as a spare. Interesting though that your skid plate bolts were that tight. I wonder how many times filters are NOT changed....

I haven't heard of someone getting a fake filter housing in particular, but I've seen and heard of lots of cases of people getting fake/non-genuine products of other types from Amazon. My take for something like this, why take the chance when you can just know you're getting the real deal from the dealership, plus you get a record then that you bought a genuine part.

I saw someone post here at some point that they bought from Amazon then took that part to the dealer for them to verify it was genuine. So what was saved by buying from Amazon?

Off topic but funny story about fakes on Amazon... On another forum I follow, earlier this year a guy posted that he had bought a Kershaw knife from Amazon, put it away and didn't use it for some time. Eventually he pulled it out to use it or start carrying it or something, and one of the side scales fell off. So he called Kershaw, they said send it in and they'd fix it. He sends it to Kershaw, they get back in touch with him and let him know it wasn't a genuine Kershaw knife, it was a fake probably made in China.

So Kershaw told him the indicators, what to look for to spot those fakes. A bunch of guys following the thread then checked their Kershaw knives they bought from Amazon and discovered theirs were fakes too.
