Has anyone else noticed a loud popping sound in reverse after installing a lift? I'm running Bilstein 6112's up front at 3rd setting plus CB shims for an additional 1/2". I've got 5160's in the rear with CB Shackles and CB drop kit. It only does it in first reverse after start up, I can't get it to do it again until after it's been sitting for a while. It's not in the linkage, like when I first put it in R, it takes my rolling back a few feet. I'd say it must be pretty loud if my deaf ass can hear it. I have 90% hearing loss in my left ear and 60% loss in my right ear. Everything looks good from what I can see.received_893673164665552~2-01.jpg

    1 or 2... I lost count
Couple follow up questions so people can help diagnose your problem easier:
    1. Do you only reverse when you start the truck? Has there ever been a time that this happened in drive after your first start up?
    2. Does it happen when you have the wheels turned or straight?
    3. This might sound wierd, but, is the sound a "pop" or more like a "clunk"?

My first thought is that it may be the ABS self-check that will happen when you first put the truck in gear and start moving. Here is a thread that has a good explanation of that https://www.tundras.com/threads/noise-right-after-i-take-off.104838/#post-2696352

It is not the ABS click. It is much louder than that. I have it after changing leaf springs.

You know, I started to include that in my original post.... I know about the ABS self check at 6 mph and thought that question might get asked. This is not the clunk sound you hear; it's more of a pop.

Typically, I only reverse when I start the truck to back out of my driveway. Sometimes I back in so I can leave out in Drive. I've only got it to do it backing straight up in my driveway. I haven't had a chance to do some big figure 8's to rule out CV's but I'm almost certain that's not it. I talked to my dad the other day and explained it to him and he thinks it's the front U-joint.

I'll record mine. It is definitely in the rear.

Interesting, I think mine is coming from the front, but I need to get someone else to observe because my hearing could make me think it's closer than what it is....

Did you use the bushings that came with the shackles or reuse your OEM?

And check your alignment cams. They need to be torqued to like 200lbs. I’ve never seen an alignment shop actually torque them correctly. While you’re down there make sure the tabs aren’t bent.

Good question. So the shop that did the installation forgot to install the shackles.... Then when they installed them (the next day) they did not follow the instructions and put the poly bushings in the frame and left the rubber bushings in the leaf spring eyelets. So I had to take it back AGAIN and me and the owner took the poly bushings out of the frame, put OE back, pressed out rubber bushings and put the Ekstrom Design bushings in the rear leaf spring eyelets like it was supposed to be done the first time.

I appreciate it, I will look into that. What tabs am I looking for?

Here’s a pic from the forum. That cam tab circled can bend. Not very common but does happen. If it does happen or the bolt isn’t torqued high enough, the lower control arm can shift causing a clunk. And torquing it should be done by the alignment shop while it’s on the lift. It is just about impossible to do with the truck on the ground. Just no space to get a long 200lbs torque wrench in there and get leverage to pull.

Did you mess with your UCAs at all? If there's any play in the bolt that goes through the shock tower, you'll definitely hear popping as the washers hit

I had a sound in my Tacoma similar to what you're describing. Turned out to be my springs needed tightening. Just thought I'd throw this out there.

Jack up one front wheel at a time and when it's off the ground, grab the tire and wiggle it from side to side. If your upper is loose you'll see it

Do you set your E-Brake when you park? Could it be E-Brake disengaging? That's what a co-worker mentioned today. I don't set my brake at work, so no pop. Pulled back up, set brake, slight pop when backing up. Maybe sitting over night with pressure on it can make it stick? I will be paying close attention to this to see if it could be the source.
