Yesterday evening on the way to dinner, the Tundra started sputtering and running horribly. Was only 5 miles from home so I turned around and went home. Only way I could keep it running was to be accelerating. As soon as I took my foot out of it, it started again. Also, "traction control off" indicator lit up on the dash. Both exhaust tips are coated with thick black soot. Had oil changed, transmission service, both diffs serviced 3 days ago at Toyota. They said everything was perfect. I have a 16 TRD Pro only 40K mi. I have an AFE intake and a Hypertech Tuner. Any info would be helpful for my discussion with Toyota.

Would the fuel pump going bad cause the tips to be covered in soot? Wonder if they over filled the oil? Were the tips wet?

Soot was VERY dry, very black. Assumed it was from the either lack of fuel or too much fuel and all the misfiring of the motor.

just went out and started truck. Traction control off light came on immediately as did check engine light. Strong smell of gas from exhaust. Seems to be flooding.

Black soot is running way rich (overfueling).

At this point, I would get the hypertech off your truck, pull the easiest spark plug you can get to and see what it looks like. I'm willing to guess you have some fouled plugs.

no. not flex fuel. has had premium fuel only since I bought it new. Toyota says it's electrical, but after 4 days can't tell me what. They are going through wiring harnesses. It's killing me not having my truck!!!!!! Having to borrow a single cab GMC WT from work. Not even power locks or windows...................

4 1/2 days for Toyota to tell me the computer went bad, they think..................but they won't know for sure til they take it out................... Good news though. They might have it back to me sometime next week..................Glad I bought a new truck and an extended warranty.................Let's see............that'll only be 10 or so days..................maybe i'm being impatient, but 4 1/2 days to diagnose and about the same to repair?

    Damn. So the ECM fried?

Anyone else remember a time when a ECM went bad? This is something I would expect from a dodge or jeep (had it happen to both).

    Glad you had the warranty.

ECM didn't go bad...............After 7days they finally let me know that they couldn't figure it out, but had disconnected the battery for a couple hours, then re-connected it, and the trouble codes were all gone and truck was running normal. Also tried to hand me a bill........I didn't accept, they reconsidered. I took my truck and ran!!! Never to return!!!!! No more issues 3 days later. Going to take it back to dealer where I purchased (even though an hour away) and have them hook it up and take a look. This dealer will never turn another wrench on my truck.

It is under warranty. But I had to approve diagnostic time for them to even start. Then they called a day later to approve an additional 2 1/2 hours. So they tried to bill me for the hours of diagnostics. And they couldn't find the problem. They had to have 10-15 hours in it by the time somebody thought to unhook the battery and let it reset. They sent me on my way without so much as a signature after I started bitching. Kinda hard to believe they had my truck for 7 days, several hours of diagnostics, and me talking to about every level of management, there was no paperwork. The guys I bought it from are going to give it a good on once-over. I love my truck, just not this particular service dept...................

Probably because they bank on the fact that a lot of people are stupid and will pay it.

I feel the same way about a lot of bills I receive with weird charges on them. Usually if you take the time to call them out on it they will reverse it. I think companies bank on the fact that most people don't even notice because it blends in with all the other charges and they make it look legit one way or another.
