On Monday I had an appointment to have my Powertrax GT501536 installed on my 2019 Tundra TRD Pro at a local differential specialist shop near me. We expected this to be a 5 hour job tops but it ended up being a 15 hour job since after all the hurdles we had, the final hurdle that we could not overcome was getting the factory driveshafts back into place as the splines on the driveshaft did not match with the splines on the Powertrax diff. No matter how much we tried to get it in it would not fit. So to make a long story short we had to put the factory diff back in and put the truck back to stock. I called Powertrax to report this issue and they were shocked that it didn’t work, I told them that I felt that it’s a manufacturing defect on their part as their part is supposed to work with my stock parts. Not the other way around.

I’m sending the defective diff back to the retailer for an exchange and I hope the replacement unit works and that somehow perhaps I was just unlucky and got a bad part. I’ll be happy to answer any questions you may have but I wanted to put this information out there for the Toyota Tundra community. Thanks for reading.

I have no idea, they should all be the same. Unless I don’t know something the driveshaft splines should all be the same and line up. But in my case it doesn’t. I was told that maybe 1 in 100 are defective

Yep it was. The mechanic felt so bad for me that he just charged me for 10 hours instead of 15.

What hurdles were there besides the unit being out of spec?
10+ hours trying to figure out it does not fit seems a touch strange.

I didn’t supply a shim kit so we had to get in the mechanics car and drive to another town to source some shims. The Toyota dealership didn’t have it either. The other hurdle was not being able to get the factory drive shaft back into the Powertrax diff, so we called around and was told that maybe 1 in a 100 are defective. An off-road shop we called recommended that we source dry ice and dip the axle splines in it to get the metal to contract and be able to slide in but it never worked. The hunt for dry ice took time also.

in the end we had to put everything back to stock. In the meantime the defective diff is going back to the seller and I’m getting a new one sent to me. Hopefully the next one will work out.

For what it is worth, I ran into a similar issue with my Grip Pro install. The shop called Motive, they recognized the issue, and the "fix" was to hammer them in. The shop wouldn't do that.

2 options presented by the shop. Install factory carrier or machine the splines. I wasn't going that far into coat and turning around. They were able to take some ridiculously small amount off the height of the splines, like 15 thousandths or something nuts, and then they slid right in. After hearing that, it explains why Motive said to hammer them in, as the amount removed is insanely small.

Cost for the axle work was under 200 bucks and it set them back only 1 day. Not ideal, but best of both worlds. The shop only does diffs and axles and had never seen this issue from Motive products.

Think I would have told the old mechanic to go work on someone else’s vehicle while I went and picked up the shim kit and not pay him an hourly rate for the Uber ride he provided.

Usually shop charges for labor time if truck sits on the lift. They'll make money regardless

I recently had the same issue while installing the Powertrax Grip Lok into my 2008 Tundra. We tried to force the axle shafts in but that created so much tension in the locker that it binded all up. I tried to call various phone numbers provided on the Powertrax homepage but no one ever answered and they still haven´t answered my email which I sent last week. It was not an option to resend the locker to SummitRacing since we had already installed 5.29 gears so we ended up forcing the axle shafts out again (which was a huge PITA) and machining the splines of the driveshafts like you did - thanks for the tip. It worked well and everything went smoothly after that and I am now breaking in the new 5.29 gears and lockers (ARB in the front).

It is obvious that the Powertrax manufacturer is having quality issues in the manufacturing process and I recommend to everyone to check whether the axles fit into the carrier splines before you do any work on the ring and pinion.

Thought I would put this comment in here to provide others with some more info on this issue and a possible solution if they encounter this problem. Hope the locker works well and I didn´t go through all this to end up with a shitty locker :)

You guys keep saying driveshafts. Please tell me you mean axle shafts.

Just got mine back from getting a Powertrax installed. My Mechanic said the splines fit but were definitely tight. I also told him to check the fitment before diving deeper into the job since I was aware of the possible issues. Loving it so far though I’ll say that!

I wonder does the 19 pro have the auto LSD? How would it react to using a real LSD in combination??

i guess if the system doesn’t sense the wheel slip no issues. Or if it does its like double the LSD

You would be correct in thinking there is no issue with it. If the tires aren’t slipping at different speeds it won’t intervene anyway, but you would need the auto LSD turned on and if anything it would only aid in giving more traction to the non slipping wheel. Or you can drive like me and always have the TCS and VSC turned off anyways.
