I recently purchased as used 2018 Toyota Tundra limited and the TPMS system is showing it malfunctioned. When I start the truck the TPMS light blinks for 60 seconds, then a malfunction message shows. All tire pressures show ---.

I have unplugged the battery, went through multiple tpms system resets via the button under the dash, checked to ensure tire pressures are correct, and have drove over 100 miles with the error still present.

Today I took it to my local tire shop and they told me all four tpms sensors are communicating with their system correctly so they were at a loss on issues or how to fix.

Has others had a similar issue and what did you do to fix? I really wanted to avoid the dealer but it seems inevitable at this point.

Any tips, tricks, or heads up before I got to dealer is greatly appreciated!

Flip open the manual to the TPMS reset procedure and give that a try. I used to get the same message periodically and resetting/syncing the sensors worked for me.

When I first got my 2019 (used) the Toyota dealer I bought it from must have reset the sensors and not driven it because they came on a little ways into my drive home. The dealer I bought it from was over an hour away so I didn't want to take it back to them. I took it to a tire place when I was out and about the next day and they couldn't figure it out, said the same thing, all the sensors were doing what they were supposed to. I went through the book and did the reset procedures, no luck. Took it to my local Toyota dealer and they had it fixed in a few minutes. Something with the coding of the number of digits in the tpms system was off. I think if the tpms sensors have been replaced there are two different kinds, one with a 4 digit communication and one with a 5 digit (something like that) They fixed it pretty quick.

Thanks TundraMidwest! Your story sounds exactly like mine so I am HOPEFUL it is that easy. The dealership I bought it from was not a Toyota dealer and they did put new tires on the truck, so potentially they replaced or were unable to reprogram the sensor like your situation. I guess I will have to go to the dealership at this point... Fingers crossed

Make sure you spare tire is inflated. so you need to check pressure in 5 tires....

MadMax (or anyone), can someone confirm the spare has a TPMS sensor? The tire dealership said mine doesn't have one (or not reading one) and from doing some 'google'n', I dont believe the 2018 Tundra has TPMS in the spare but it was not 100% clear.

Used truck? if so someone could have added. I am not sure if I have a sensor in my 2016 for the spare. Pretty sure I dont, if it shows low for me it is always one of the four driving tires. But there could be one in there....I know my 2006 4runner has one in the spare stock.

Stock spares did not come with TPMS. Also, even if it did, the wheels in motion are the ones the truck will display. I changed wheels, got a matching spare, and added TPMS to it, and the truck never confuses the spare with them.

Thanks all! I was able to get the TPMS system working again!

I learned that there are two different sequences you need to follow to reset the system. First sequence is pressing the TPMS button 3 times to "register" the sensors and drive for 10 minutes. Then press the TPMS button and hold till it flashes 3 times to "initialize" the system then drive for 10 minutes.

I was only doing the second sequence, forgetting the first. Once I did the first sequence it fixed my readings so we good now!
