Most guys go with bigger tires on their trucks even if it's incremental. As I have experienced over the years, ANY tire size change affects the vehicle dynamics of how it was engineered. I hear a lot of friends complain about how their Tundra operates after these changes, but always put up with it because of its reliability.

They change it to make it look better and then hate how it drives after. I've heard guys say the truck is "happy" after the proper gears and that is the best way to put it. After having the 5.29s installed, my truck operates so well that MPG isn't as big of an issue, whereas when I was lugging the tires around I hated how it operated AND hated the MPG. Now the truck is wayyy more confident, wayyy more fun to drive. These trucks are almost like a living organism, give it what it wants and it in turn gives you what you want.

I have 4.88s from Nitro on my truck, found them on a website for an RV outfitter in California for about a grand. My 2013 with 35x12.5x18 KO2s drives much closer to stock now, averages 15 MPG going up to Eisenhower tunnel here in Colorado. Very little, if any, gear hunting. Lots of torque off the line. Pretty happy with them.

Keep in mind that if the gears are noisy, you will be paying the additional labor to change them out unless ordered through the installer. I found this out the hard way.

If you have any kind of exhaust...... you're not going to hear any gear noise.

I'd be more worried about mechanical failure

I'm still in my 500 mi break-in but plan to use some really good stuff after the drain and fill. I was looking at Nitro's recommendations and they have 80W-140 para-synthetic GL-5 type stuff. Has anyone used any 80W-140 with their Nitro gears? Could it possibly help with the noise issue?

I don't remember what oil I got from Nitro..... but it's whatever they recommended. Once again....I hear zero gear noise with my DD exhaust

I'm with you on the radio/exhaust drown out method but I want these gears to be in their prime habitat. You probably got the 80W-140. No issues?

No issues for me. I've heard a few with issues and a few others did some kind of treatment to them before installation.... but I don't remember what it's called. Usually with gears the only time there is an issue is when they aren't installed correctly....unfortunately we're all human so even the best installers can make a mistake

This is what I got from Nitro when asking about towing break-in and Lucas 85w-140 (what I'm running).

NO THATD BE GREAT IM SURE , HERE WE RUN AN 80W-140 MADE FOR US BY SCHAFFERS; HAS A PARAFINIC BASE SO THERES NO NEED FOR FRICTION MODIFIERS.

I THOUGHT IT WAS FUNNY WHEN I LEARNED THAT’S WHAT WE USE HERE , MY GRANDFATHER WAS AN EXCAVATOR AND USED THAT BRAND OF OIL IN EVERYTHING HE OWNED HAHA. THE TOP OF THE LINE SYNTHETICS CAN DECREASE THE HEAT INSIDE THE DIFF BY UP TO 35 % , THAT’S THE MOST IMPORTANT PART ABOUT IT

Great to hear! @Sumo91 was using Schaeffer's and swore by it. I do think Nitro is overcharging for their qts though :monocle:

Yes sir! I ran Schaeffers for years in everything I've owned. It's great stuff!

I have a 2021 Tundra with 5.29 gears running 35s and it’s been amazing. However, I would recommend buying a tuner to get the ecu adjusted because you really start to noticed how slow the transmission shifts with this gear setup.

Is there a recommended tuner? I have the same setup with a heavy camper and could benefit from one. Thanks

HP Tuners, but I would recommend using someone with experience to build a custom tune for you, if you have a local place that can do it on a dyno even better.

100% hit the nail on the head. I thought my new gears were awesome till I had my truck tuned and dug into the trans controls. Really made a huge difference.
