I have 2020 trd pro. I just replaced the tires/wheels to Fuel Vapor 20x9 +35mm wheels and nitro grappler 285/60 r20 , exchanged for stock that I bought from custom offset. They came on a pallet, mounted and balanced.

Prior to the exchange, my stock set up worked perfectly. No issue in alignment or anything. Since I installed the new setup, at 55-60mph, i get a pronounced side-to-side shift, or wobble, in the steering wheel. It shifts back and forth aggressively. That is the only issue. I can't feel shake in truck. If the steering wheel didn't wobble, there would not be an issue. The truck tracks straight, and steering wheel is straight.

Any idea of the cause of this ??

Out of balance. Out of round tire. Wheel not mounted to vehicle properly.

Wrong lug nuts can cause issues too

my thoughts were balance issues also. The lug nuts are some weird, lightweight, open ended contraptions.
I doubt the tires are mounted incorrectly, I've done my fair share of mechanics, but I could have screwed the pooch on mounting them.

They could be mounted incorrectly. There’s usually a dot on the tire that corresponds to the heaviest side of the tire to help the person mounting the tire match that up (it would be mounted opposite of) with whatever the heaviest part of the rim is. That way the rim and tire are already trying to balance each other out before you ever start adding weights. Large lug heavy off-road tires are notoriously harder to balance. Your symptoms sound like an out of balance setup. Take to a good tire shop and have them rebalanced. Road force balance is better and May be necessary to get it smooth.

    Not sure at this point.
Everyone’s input is definitely on point here.

    1. Lug nuts not seating the wheel properly onto the hub
    2. Wheel out of true
    3. Tire out of true
    4. Wheel/tire not being mounted on properly (could be due to lugs)
What medium is being used on your wheels? Hammer weight? Tape weight? Beads?

If you can, find a shop using a Road force balancer.

    Toyota-installed 4" lift & 305/55/20 tires on Fuel Wheels.
Brethren, I feel your pain. I bought a 2021 SR5 4WD brand new that they had pre-installed a 4" RC lift on. This was 18 months ago. Everything was fine, except between 47 & 52mph. Had the shakes. It was on the steering wheel only. Did not feel it in the seat. To avoid the dealership runaround, I took it elsewhere for and alignment & road force balance. No luck there. Took it to the dealership & sure as $hit, they kept it a day and said they couldn't find anything wrong with it. This went back & forth for 6 or 7 service appointments. They did finally experience the shake. (I had videoed it a few times to prove it to them.)

Anyhoo, they exhausted all things mechanical & adjustable. They moved on to the tires. It came with Falken 33's & Fuel wheels as part of the lift work that they had done. We explored lug nuts - conical vs. flats, bore diameter to hub size, location placement of tire weights, Upper Control Arm angle influences, etc. Nothing. They replaced one tire, then a second tire and eventually all four to some other brand (Hankook, maybe?). Still nothing.

Finally. I called a 4WD speciality shop and ran it all by them. While no fan of Fuel wheels, they said that more than likely it was the tires. They said both those brands were junk & to go with Nitto or Toyo. The dealership switched them to Nitto Terra Grapplers. Made a big diff, but still had a bit of shimmy.

Then I had an epiphany, of sorts. It only shook at the small window of speed that I mentioned. Faster or slower & there was no problem. Every time I got in the truck and left the house, it would shake a bit. After some driving for a while it wasn't as bad & sometimes would disappear altogether. When we went with the Nittos, it would disappear after about 10 minutes or 5-10 miles. So it seems that when the truck would sit for several hours or overnight in the driveway, the tires would get a 'flat spot' in them. Once driven a bit & the rubber warmed, it was smoother than a baby's hinny. This was hard for me to accept or believe, but one year later & I'm convinced about it now. It only takes a couple of miles or minutes nowadays & it's good. I run 40psi in the fronts, 35 in the rears. Nitto also makes an F-series Grappler that is a 10-ply that I might try when it's time.

I'm not saying this is your issue, but I do know the frustration and how maddening it can become. Good luck!

Roach, great write up. I thought long and hard before replacing wheels just because of the issues it may cause.

I ended up at discount tires. They rebalanced the tires, still have that annoying wobble , but now at 50-55 mph. I am thinking, wtf???
I’m going to swap tire position and see what that does.

Had the same thing with my coopers since day one I’ve had them road forced the whole 9 the dealer said one tire is cupped slightly. But they have been doing it since they were new. My guess is it’s out of round and they don’t want to warranty it. Rides fine as long as that tire is in the back. But up front it shakes the steering wheel feels like the truck is falling apart. I’ll be going with falkens next time around
