I ran across this thread after searching for CAI information and whether it's worth the money. I added a K&N drop in filter a few months back to replace the stock filter. I was averaging 10.4 MPG with my truck when I had the stock filter, and now with the K&N average around 9.8 or so and that is with the computer in the truck giving me that average. I don't baby the truck but I also don't drive it like I stole it either. I kinda feel that by taking in more air with a cold air intake then that should help add some fuel miles per gallon. Just wondering if the cost was actually worth that?

Your profile says lift and tires
What size lift and what size tires and have you used a speedo calibrator like a hypertech to adjust your odo/speedo for the size difference of your tires? If not, that will affect your calculated mileage (because your truck thinks it is driving less miles than it really is) more than anything. Add to that poor aerodynamics from a lift and you’re heading for low mpg.

you won’t see any substantial gains from a cold air intake or the SABM mod - the Tundra already has a pretty functional cold air intake system in the way the factory air intake is designed

I have not calibrated my speedometer with anything, I believe the lift is 3 inch and the tires are 35's. I bought this truck this way. I wasn't expecting great fuel mileage when I made the jump to this truck. I was just looking at different mods that I could do and have been wondering if the CAI was even worth the cost at all. Of course all the information that you read try and make you think that the factory installed intake is robbing the vehicle of air, but I am sure that they have to do certain things because of emissions and trying to squeeze all they can out of fuel mileage when building the vehicles.
    Thanks for the response.

35’s compared to factory tires are in the ballpark of 7% less revolutions per mile (so your speedo is reporting ~7% less than actual speed and ODO is reporting ~7% less miles traveled than actual).
Add to that the additional weight that 35’s will have and you’re gonna see low numbers. The factory air system intake is pretty damn good in these trucks. If you’re seeing a drop using the K&N, you could look at going back to OEM - that’s an inexpensive experiment to try. You might also be getting some fouling if you over-oiled the KN at all, though the factory carbon secondary filter ought to catch that (it’s plastic welded into the air box lid)

I installed an aFe filter and airflow accelerator.

Any suggestions to replace the tube between the air box and the engine without buying the entire kit (TRD, S&B, aFe Super Stock, Etc.)?

The Stillen with the forward facing intake duct is like having a SABM. You can still do a SABM but unless you have a supercharger its not likely you have an airflow restriction.

Well.... my slow ass finally got around to doing this mod after having the parts for way to long

I did the DIY version and it took me about 3 hours from start to finish. Did this a few days ago and haven't put a ton of miles on the truck yet, but my initial impressions are good. The truck feels smoother in its acceleration and it does feel like I have more power off the bat. Between this and my throttle controller, its a blast to drive. I have the stock air box and stock exhaust, but I do have an AFE dry filter installed.

Um... I ordered the 31-10247 not sure what the difference is since the other one is also a dry filter and says it fits the 5.7L Tundra too. If you scroll thru the pics, they show what your stock filter should look like and the one for the 31-10247 matched what I had.

So the SABM with the AFE drop in was nice. Added some growl and the truck felt a little more responsive and it felt like the engine was breathing better. All around it felt like it ran smoother with the SABM. I also did the DIY intake tube (basically the TRD tube but you source the boots) and that also gave some noticeable sound improvement when you step on it. Engine doesn't sound too different when cruising but you can definitely hear it now. I've increased tire size so its hard to say if there are any mpg gains, but I haven't taken a hit and I enjoy driving it a bit more. Definitely think the 2 are worth doing.

Nice. I have the old kit that I took out of my 2013 but I don't think it will work on mine due to the air box being different. I know they revised the kit a while back to make it longer, but I don't know if anything else changed.

I did the DIY version, once the fitting was mounted to the airbox and fender well. I just had to trim the tube to length, easy to accommodate different spacing.

I'll mess with it this weekend and see if it fits. It won't hurt since I already have it lol.

    None. Yet.
It's not a cold air intake system so why not just drill the hole in the box and leave out all the extra b.s. Is it really that much cooler pulling from the air from the fender when it 100 degrees outside in Florida? Nope.

    2cents.

100 air outside vs 150-200 engine bay makes a difference

    Many on the way.
Turn your extra hole on and off. Since it’s no longer used, programing the ACIS valve on the supercharged trucks to operate this would be neat.

We’re actually building custom box with a valve open/close on the old man’s rig. Should be interesting
