We are taking our 2014 Forest River Evo out for the first time in what feels like an eternity, in reality about 2 years. The battery we've been using is the same one that came with it from the dealer back in late 2013, A centennial DP24MFS
    https://www.centennialbatteries.com...ose-battery-dp24mfs-group-24-maintenance-free

It seems like its on the tail end of its life, last time we dry camped it would discharge quite quickly, so its time for a new one.

Whenever we dry camp, i always bring one or two of our 2kw inverter generators, so i'm not worried about trying to make it a week in the woods without having to fire up the generator, but i also dont want to have to run the generator every few hours to make sure we can watch a movie at night.
I've read about two 6v golf cart batteries is a good option. Not sure if its overkill for me. I could get a larger single lead acid or Agm. I'm not sure if i need a special charger for the agm or if the onboard charger is good to go.
    Thoughts?

Looks like sams club has $20 off batteries for another day or two

    Function before sparkle.
Two 6v are a very common option. For most travel trailers it’s a better solution than a single higher quality 12 volt and takes to repeated drain/charge cycles well.

Added hitch weight (probably close to 150 lbs with two 6v) is one of the biggest down sides along with no power of one batter suddenly dies. But the pro is generally higher combined amp hours compared to a single deep cycle 12v.

I'm not a battery expert, but the deep cell that came with my trailer lasted 3 years. During that time it would last approx 2-3 days powering the fridge circuit, heat circuit and various lighting only. (dry camping) Since then I have switched to two regular group 24 batteries. They easily last 7-10 days before I have to fire up the portable generator to recharge them. I'm going on 2 years with these two regular car batteries.

Depends on how much money and work you want to invest in it. Here in Arizona no battery last much more that 2-3 years at the most. My trailer came with 2 group 24s that I would get about 12-16 months out of. I looked into AGM and lithium but the prices and related changes to the system just wasn't worth it. I upgraded to 2 group 27 deep cycles from Autozone and just expect to have to replace them every couple of years.

It is what it is, but the same thing goes for car batteries here too. Just find the best deal with the best warranty and expect to replace every 2-3 years.

I have a 100 amp hour Mighty Max. I went for this battery based on numerous online reviews, I've only used it a couple times because of the Pandemic but I'm very happy with it's performance. September 2020, I had a remote wilderness 10 day elk hunt, which it performed flawlessly, granted I was careful not to use too much power daily.

The trailer batteries seem to take a beating since you don’t use them for a while then hit them with constant drain and charge for a few weeks a year. I buy the cheap marine grade batteries from Napa auto parts and they last a few years. If you get lead acid batteries make sure you check the fluid and top them off when you need as well as disconnect/ tend them when they h e long periods of inactivity. When camping I run the generator for about 2 hours a day. Generally when the wife of getting ready to make sure she has outlet power for her accessories. At that time we charge devices as well. That seems to be enough to keep us going most days. That’s on longer trips where we park for a week or two at a time. Usually we camp during winter so the heater is running a lot as well as the fact that she needs to shower everyday so we end up using a lot of power daily.

Our trailer came with one small lead acid battery. I replaced it with a pair of 12V, 75 AH AGM batteries wired together to give me 150 amp hours. This was cheaper than going for lithium ion and I think cheaper than 6V.

Haven't tested the duration yet but I think it would last us a while. Here is a link to the ones I got:

and the wires to wire them together:

I ended up getting a single agm over dual 6v'ers, figured that it's got a better chance of living for a few years as long as it stored fully charged.

In my Rpod I installed two 24 group from Walmart, it was around $200 for both, I used them for about four years and they were still keeping a full charge when I traded in that camper. I added a kill switch to disconnect them during storage. I did this almost two years ago with my Shafta, did not use the camper for over a year and they still had plenty of juice to run all the lights and appliances.

I discovered that the stereo in my travel trailer has blacklighting and a clock that stays on 24/7 if the battery is connected. It will definitely drain a weaker battery in storage. We installed a new battery and went on a 5 day trip back in Dec. After we returned I disconnected the negative cable and connected the solar maintainer. These work very well for keeping the battery topped off. I was actually there today and its still good to go.

    Reviving this old thread.

We have decided to upgrade our 8yo travel trailer to a new one thats about 6' longer and has a slide out.
As far as the previous Duracell battery, i wasn't the most impressed with it. It could have been the onboard battery monitor, but it seemed like using it for led lights and a little bit of tv time in the evening would drain it down to about half.

For the new trailer, i'm going to give the two 6v golf cart batteries a go, i've got a good amount of costco gift cards to use, so i'll be purchasing them through my local warehouse.
    https://www.costco.com/interstate-6-volt-golf-cart-battery.product.100476406.html
Holy smokes, those are some terrible reviews. Seems like people like them or dont, and it seems like misuse or maintenance is an issue. Sounds like they really like to be topped off with water regularly. I read some reviews to keep them trickle charged to 13.6v and other ones that said not to trickle charge them. Most people say not to let them go below 50% charge before topping them back up.

Anyone have any experience with running 6v'ers?

I'm thinking about grabbing a solar panel with a trickle charger to try to keep them topped off. Worst case i can always run an extension cord the day before to charge them up if the trickle isn't a good idea.

Now that i'm back in the office part time, its just sitting in the garage, so i'm thinking about using it.

In my trailer, I run 4x 6v golf cart batteries with 600w solar. But, I built my trailer with that planned in the layout).
Starting mid April, I can go without running the generator as long as it is sunny during the day. Cloudy days and low sun angle make me have to run the generator (usually a couple hours in the evening when I take a shower and sometimes a couple hours in the morning if I want to run the heater or do something that requires lots of power). Summer with sunny days, I only need the generator to run my AC. This keeps my battery bank from dropping below 12.4v.
My electric demands without the generator running are furnace fan, fridge/freezer, entertainment system, security cameras (2) with monitor, 8" front light bar and porch light all night, intermittent water pump, intermittent Ridgid tool battery charger run off inverter, and I leave my bathroom fan running for two hours after I take a shower.

If you don't have an actual voltage gauge, I'd suggest installing one. I know one guy who would drop his voltage below 12 thinking he was good because his 12v stuff still worked and didn't have a gauge to tell him the actual battery voltage.

What about going lithium ion? a little more upfront but last longer. As long as your not charging in extreme cold you should be good. Can take them all the way to zero vs a lead acid where you only want to take to about 50% charge. Works awesome on my fish finder and soooo much lighter. I got a 32ah one from these guys. https://ampedoutdoors.com/ I realize a fish finder has way less amp draw, but they do have them for trolling motors which take a lotta amps.

Ran a pair of 6V golf cart batteries in our 31' toy hauler for years. Put them in when we bought it (used) in 2013 and they were still going when we sold it last fall. Granted we'd usually run the generator for 30-40 minutes during breakfast and again at dinner, but the batteries took care of us the rest of the time, to include some pretty cold nights during hunting season.

I did look at lithium, and it seems like that's the way things are heading, but damn....gonna run about a grand for a battery.
We only do dry camping once or twice a year, but I want to make sure I can use all the creature comforts when we do....that's the point of the trailer!

We are coffee junkies so an espresso machine comes with us, the generator gets fired up first thing for breakfast and usually in the evening as well

I'm pretty excited to see how it works. Hard to beat the capacity on these guys. PXL_20220507_141356564.jpg

Does anyone know if 2ga is good enough for the jumper? I have a second jumper I could double up. Reading online I heard some people say some crazy stuff like needing 2/0 gauge.
I figured matching or bigger than the trailer wiring should be good.

I am using Interstate Batteries SLIGC125 batteries with 1/0 welding cable, cable ends were crimped (hammer lug crimper) with glue lined heat shrink.
    IMG_20220507_085155.jpg
Once I build the lid, the battery box will be positive pressure vented with the fan that I have mounted on the bottom side where the gap is and it vents via a pipe that I have running out of the opposite side of the box and out through the floor.
Solar is 4x 100w Renogy panels on the roof hooked to a Renogy 40A MPPT, 2x panels on the bathroom wall (with one covering half the window as a privacy cover) hooked to a Renogy 20a PMW.
    IMG_20220507_092249.jpg
I plan to add 2 more panels in the future and will upgrade to a Renogy 100A MPPT to take them all. At that point, I will upgrade my cables to 2/0. The two on the wall were added because my employer put me in a bad spot for low angle sun and I needed some on the side to catch sun through the trees, and I figure I'll build a door awning for my porch using two more.
    IMG_20220503_202607.jpg
Plan is to eventually have enough supply and capacity to be able to run a 12v air conditioner.
My batteries and fresh water tank are positioned directly above the axles, so I don't have concern about weight distribution for them.

    1 or 2... I lost count
You should be good with 2ga as a jumper. I can't see any reason that a 2/0 gauge wire would be used as a jumper, that is a cable for a long run to a large inverter. With that length of jumper, at 2ga, I would say that cable is good for a 2000-3000 watt inverter but your longer cables would want to be bigger.

Thats an awesome setup! Our new trailer has a port on the side that you can plug a solar panel directly into and it just charges the batteries, so i'll keep an eye out for a good deal on a decent panel. We dont dry camp all that often, but with how popular camping is lately, we now have had to look more towards dry spots.

Thats what i was thinking. I figured that 2ga would be enough, but once i did a little searching and saw some people were using some craaaaazzzzy thick stuff.

I used cable entry glands and Renogy cable easy disconnects. I made a solar cable using an old 25' extension cord so I can pull the panels off and set them in the sun away from my trailer if needed.

I might reach out to you when I'm shopping for a panel.
You happy with the Renogy? Seems like a popular manufacturer

I am very happy with them. I have 6 on my trailer, one on my Tundra, one that will be mounted on my tractor, and one that I am going to mount on my folks generator shed to keep the generator starting battery topped up so my mother doesn't have to use the pull cord to start it (since I am not sure she could). I also mounted two of the flexible 100w panels on my folks Airstream (I don't care for the flexible ones due to lack of airflow underneath, but my father didn't want flat panels on top). I buy my panels off of eBay and Amazon. RENOGY Direct often has sales that beat dealers and get free shipping. I've only ever had one issue with Renogy. I ordered a set of connectors and the order was improperly packaged with missing parts and incorrect assortment. I emailed them and they immediately sent out a replacement set and told me to keep the others as spares.

I just finished installing a 300w solar panel setup. 3 panels and ready for a 4th if I find 3 isn't cutting it.

Relevant to the thread, I just bought two $100 6v batteries from Sam's club today.

Thanks for all the info. I'm going to keep an eye out, I'll probably sign up for their newsletter, and keep an eye on slickdeals.
Ill probably just lay them on the ground, I don't want to drill into a brand new trailer.....yet. :)
I hooked up a clamp meter with the lights, tv, soundbar and 2 fans on and it was drawing just about 10amps from the battery, much better than I thought it would be more.

I saw that people were pretty happy with the Duracell GC batteries. If I didn't have gift cards at Costco to burn, I would have got them there.
Do you happen to know the warranty? My Costco batteries only have a 12mo warranty, I believe my deep cycle I got from sams had a 18mo.

    Sweet solar setup too!

My trailer is factory wired with 6awg, so I just made a jumper of the same size. No inverter today, perhaps a small one for the tv someday.

I would need to upgrade all my cables to do anything more. Unless I'm missing something....
