    Current setup:
    Kenwood DMX 1037S
    Infinity Kappa 5 amp
    Kenwood Excelon KFC-X2C 2.75" x2 dash
    Hertz K170 6.75" x4 doors
    Kenwood Excelon XR-W1004 10" x2 in a tech12volts custom enclosure.

    Upgrades:
Arc Audio 1100.5 amp - Need more power for the dual-subs.
Steg SQL650C 6.5" x2 in the front doors - wanted more mid-bass and James said the staging will be better leaving the K170's in the rear as you want a 3db reduction in the rear doors anyway.
Audiofrog GS-25S 2.5" x2 in the dash - the Kenwoods give a little sibilance at high volumes and James said these would really smooth out that sound.

I currently have the dual-sub in parallel and with the new amp it will put out 500W at 2-ohms which should be a nice boost over the Infinity Kappa 5. This amp has quite a few more options as far as tuning and so that may take me a while.

The front door Hertz K170s and dash Kenwood KFC-X2Cs are currently running in parallel on channels 1 and 2 and I was planning to do the same with the Stegs and Audiofrogs. James said the Stegs and Audiofrogs are both very underrated as far as watts and the amp puts out 150W RMS at both 2 and 4-ohms.

    1. Does anyone think the rear door Hertz K170's will have a problem with the new amp?
    2. The Audifrogs are called full-range but the manual said 200-20k Hz - they do not come with a bass blocker and James didn't say anything about adding one - anyone think one is needed? I usually run the door crossovers at 120 Hz.

It's getting cold here and so I'll try and take pictures but tend to just want to get 'er done. I'm excited for this upgrade - everything should ship tomorrow.

You will love the gs25. They really add a lot of midrange sound.
I'm running them in a 3 way active setup and they made a big difference to fill in the sound between the midbass and the tweeters.

You should research it, but you may be able to just run the gs25 directly off the head unit, and run the door components off the amp. I believe the Kenwood head units have a 3way speaker function you can unlock so you would be able to set the crossover for the speaker. I'm not 100% sure about this, but something to look into

Is there any need for a bass blocker/crossover with the Audiofrogs or can I run a full-frequency signal to them?

My stupid question for the day - the Hertz K170's are set to high pass on the amp but the woofers don't have a x-over to limit high frequencies. The tweeter does have an inline bass blocker on it to prevent lower frequencies. Does that mean the woofer tries to play high frequencies too?

They are meant to be in an active setup where a dsp will control what frequency is sent to them, but they are a very versatile speaker, i've read about some people using them as the tweeters in a 2 way setup. You will need to set a high pass at 200hz as their safe frequency range is 200-20,000hz

So it looks like the hertz speakers are a factory replacement where the oem amp takes care of any crossovers. In reality, you want you subwoofers to stop at 80hz and your 6.5's to be at 80hz to somewhere around 300hz, and your 2.5" to be 300hz to 20khz and the tweeter to be 20khz+
Normally a passive crossover will take care of any filtering so you can give it a full range of signal and not worry about it. If your amp doesn't have the capability to limit the frequencies for each channel, you might want to sell the K170's and get a set of components with a passive crossover. You could also talk with james and see what he think. I bet he will know how to get it working.

Did you figure out if the kenwood deck has the ability to do a 3way mode?

    Thank you!

I've been running all the K170s as is on high pass with the crossover on the amp set to 100Hz for over a year. There is bass blocker built into the wire for the tweeter. There is a similar bass blocker on the wire going to the current Kenwood in the dash. James said he put together a harness for everything so it was totally plug-n-play so I assume this will be considered but I'll check with him.

Lastly, I believe the ability to run 3-way mode is only other Excelon line (DMX 1057XR) :(

    Thanks again for your help!

Gotcha. James knows what he's doing and it sounds like he's got you setup nicely.
The "bass blockers" you speak of are just inline capacitors that are acting as a filter. You can do the same thing with your gs25, just figure out what uF capacitor you need and solder it inline, throw some heat shrink over it to act as a strain relief and call it a day.

So James had some used Hertz Mille Pro 3-way crossovers he sold me for a good deal. He said they are for the Stegs in the door and Audiofrogs in dash and that included instructions on how to wire. I'm just trying to do my home work.

If I locate the crossover on the doors I'll have access to the full audio signal for the Stegs and the woofer and tweeter are easy but I'm going to have to run a mid bass wire from the crossover on the door to the dash - correct?

Or do the dash speakers already tie into the stock wiring in the door somehow?

Or would locating the x-overs next to the amp give me access to all three sets of wires (Steg woofer, Audiofrog mid, and Steg tweeter)?

I've never been very clear on how the speaker wires run in the JBL system. I'm using all stock JBL system speaker wire accept to the sub.

Best placement for crossovers in your opinion? Would it not be easier to use a 2-way passive crossover next to amp with:

    [Amp]--->[full signal to crossover]

    Outputs:

(Tweeter Output) ---->[High pass set to 400Hz]---->[Audiofrogs]---->[In-line bass blocker/x-over tweeter]---->Steg Tweeter

    (Woofer Output)--->[Steg 6.5]

I see James has a 4-door set of these on Tech12Volts but hard to find ANY information on them let alone any reviews. Just looking to add a simple amp to power all four and wondering if anyone can recommend these for their sound. It shows you installed these PWMDMD so I guess I'm asking if you can recommend.

Great speakers - a lot more midbass than the Hertz K170s they replaced.
