Looking for inputs from anyone who has 5G with Verizon Wireless. We currently have Samsung S10+ phones. Verizon moved all of their plans to 5G capable but obviously you would need to upgrade phones. The plan prices are the same. They are running a trade-in program that will take $700 off of each phone. The phones that we are looking at is the Samsung S22+. This would bring them from $999 down to $299 putting them at $8.00 a month. Everything else on the bill would remain the same. Would this be worth it? I dont know much about the actual S22+ or the 5G service itself. Thanks.

My Wife & I just did this last month, but upgraded from Iphone 10's to 13 pro max's. The 5G seems slightly "better", but it's hard to say if it's the new phone or the service. Our phones were 3-4 years old. That being said, be aware you still have to pay the tax on the full price of the phone and Verizon takes 3 +/- months to credit the account for the trade-ins (or so we were warned). Presently still waiting. Hard to pass up a $1,400 credit since we'd probably buy new phones at some point anyway. Hope this helps.

For what its worth, I work in I.T. (not for any kind of cellular carrier but I deal with end users here at the company I work for and their phones). Here is my two cents:

Depends on your area, tower density and population density. Last fall 5G in our area was terrible and I would have told you no way, even if you had a phone with 5G I would have told you to turn it off, use 4G, and wait for the carriers to catch up. Lots of towers got upgraded and its been better but during the upgrades calls dropped non stop. 5G requires a lot higher density of towers due to the shorter range and the hand-off between towers as you drive down the road used to cause the phone to cut out. It has been a lot better. Another thing to consider is why do you need 5G speed? Can you stream above full HD to 4k without much buffering? that has more to do with how device density per tower. There is plenty of bandwidth within 4G for pretty speedy downloads for what you would normally do on a phone. 5G comes more into play with hot spotting your phone. I have several t-Mobile hot spots that are 5G and I've had north of 15 people running off of them with several doing video conference calls and it worked great. Our 4G hot spots work fine for 2-3 people doing normal day to day work so long as signal strength is good. I live in a town that is a little less than 250k people and tower density seems to be pretty good but that is also pretty recent.

I have the s21 ultra. It's fast and runs fine but I miss the heck out of my s10 phone. I crushed it in the engine cover of my boat on accident last summer and the "renewed" phone they sent me ran super hot and the battery drained in half a day. I miss the headphone jack. I miss the ability to have the SD card as I used to fly a lot and stored a few hundred GB of movies on my phone, I believe the s22 has that feature again. Just for that I would trade from the 21 to a 22 in a heartbeat but they messed up my trade in credit somehow and I'm stuck with the 21 unless I want to fork over $800ish now and wait for the credit to come back on the 21.

I would say if you feel like your s10 is no longer performing well, battery is dying fast etc I would go for it. 5G is iffy in some areas but overall its faster and getting closer to being as reliable as 4G every day.

This isn't a direct answer to your question, but it's related..

I have a Verizon phone as my work phone, and use T-Mobile for my personal. I travel all over the US and internationally. T-Mobile, in my experience, has far better coverage both throughout the US and overseas. They're also more competitively priced. If I could choose the carrier for my work-issued phone I'd switch to T-Mobile in a heartbeat.

I recently upgraded both my wife's and my phone from the S10+ to the S22+ (I don't like the enormous size of the Ultra). I saved a fortune by paying cash up front for an unlocked phone directly from Samsung. No contracts, no BS. Good value for the trade ins on both old phones. $1200 out the door.

I'd do it. I have 5g on my tab s7 and it works great. Web browsing is about the same as at home on the wifi, and videos load pretty damn quick in 1080p. If you're watching a bunch of videos on 5g just make sure you're on the unlimited plan; it'll eat up your data quick.

It's hard to tell if it's a good move or not. A buddy of mine has the S21 and 5G and he said he can't even connect to 5G most of the time and that he had better reception with 4G.

True. If nothing else, the upgrades for your phones at $8 a month is worth it.

I live in amarillo and have 5g all over town so connection isn't an issue for me.

this seems totally ridiculous to spend so much on a phone. i went and bought a simpler smart phone and pay less than a hundred for unlimited for my wife and I. why would you want a note on a phone?

The S22+ is what I was looking at. The S22 Ultra is the bigger Note style.

At launch, we traded in our S10 and S10+ for the S22 and S22+. The 5G SUCKS!!! I'm sure it will get better, but right now I'm regretting my decision. And the battery life is nowhere near the S10 and S10+.

That's what I am starting to hear. No wonder the phones are discounted so much with trade in.

It was heavily discounted back at launch too. My cell phone bill with Verizon actually went down. haha

5G is only going to work in 5G areas and right now 5G isn't available everywhere. If your battery lasts all day on your phone and it works properly just keep it. My bag phone still works so I haven't upgraded.

Not sure how Samsung and google OS tackle this but Apple iOS specifically has two options in the settings. verbatim here is what is says.

5G on: Use 5g whenever it is available , even when it may reduce battery life
5G Auto: uses 5G only when it will not significantly reduce battery life.
    or you pick LTE.

So to me it is not worth it, especially if not surrounded by 5g coverage. When traveling and searching for 5g coverage battery does seem to reduce rapidly still. I haven't noticed it being significantly faster but I have noticed it doesn't seem to bog down at the usual times in the evenings when the wife's 4g does.

Now my Verizon rant. Well not really, more frustration with myself.....Mostly my fault for not being thorough and really understanding the promotional offers. But in my defense they were pretty slick with hiding the fees until all was said and done.

I don't usually like to admit monetary mistakes but Verizon got me good.

Really got tired of the big phones and jumped on the iPhone mini (paid cash) when it came out with 5g. Didn't realize the smart phone cost is more for a 5G phone than an LTE 4G phone. It used to be 20.00 for a smart phone fee. the 5G is more . Can't remember how much though. My fault for not reading fine print.

5G was spotty in all but the most urban areas and it destroyed my battery life. Plus the mini battery is smaller. I was at a point at work using GPS that I had to charge my phone 4 times a day. Verizon ran a promo to trade in your iPhone mini and receive $800.00 credit towards and iPhone 13pro (for a cost of $900) I figured it was worth it to double my battery life. So I went to Verizon and ordered the phone since everything was backordered and picked it up a few weeks later. Tried to pay cash and they said, "oh we have to wait until the first bill and you receive credit for your trade in which takes 2-3 weeks. " So, out the door I went and din't think much of it. Come to find out, I wasn't told correctly and the credit for the trade in is given in monthly installments over two years. So basically, if I I try to pay for my new phone outright I lose the 800 credit as this cancels the promotional deal. Man I was pissed.

I did look at reviews for the 5g version of my phone, a Kyocera duroforce, and they sucked too. Maybe it's just my tablet that's good on 5g. Apples to oranges I guess.

I don't know which gets raked over the coals more Americas with their subscriber tied cell phones (unless you buy unlocked) and our relative to world-wide gas prices being lower
    OR
Europe with it's sky high gas prices (forever!) yet with all phones sold unlocked so COMPETITION exists among cell providers.

Hmm - which would you pick?

Hey don't knock the bag phones. They were great back in the day with the 3W transmit power instead of the piddly 600 mW most digital phone use nowadays. I used to get service in the most remote places traveling from Boston to Texas.

This. I'm also in IT, but I deal with end users all the time, and a lot of my family worked in the telecom industry. Dad's boss's boss was the president of AT&T when he worked for them....and they all largely said the same thing - that it depends on population density, tower density and location, terrain, etc. In short, you can't really take *anyone's* word for it...you have to do the footwork yourself.

3 years ago AT&T was the best there was where I live (which wasn't saying a lot - at all). I wasn't looking for 5G a few months ago; I was looking for *anything* better. Everyone and their brother told me how great Verizon/Sprint was in our area, and how crap T-Mobile was.

I finally went wardriving (well, 5G/4G wardriving anyways lol), and....T-Mobile was/is the best - by a long shot. Not even close. I went back and spoke to the 12 or so people who told me T-Mobile sucked, and they all said either

    a) "Well, that's what I was told" ( )or
    b) "Well, they USED to be crap" (again,)

You really can't trust the carriers. You essentially have to either get a phone from them (or a hotspot), or unlock your hopefully compatible phone, and get an e-SIM and compare and contrast reception, signal strength, download/upload speeds, etc.

In my own case, I was paying $130/month with AT&T for 3 phones. Reception is better 80% of the time with T-Mobile, and the same the other 20% of the time...but now I get free Netflix, free Paramount+, and I'm paying a flat $80/month for the same 3 phones with T-Mobile. I call that a win. :)

If the "5G SUCKS!!!" it's due to your carrier, and not the phone.

I traded from an S10+ to an S22+ and notice a big improvement in battery life.. I also live in Utah. Switch to a better carrier - Verizon suucks.

Yep. 5G was pretty terrible where I live with AT&T. Ported the same phone and # to T-Mobile, and it's tons better.

I miss my Nextel chirp phone. What a time to be alive. That’s a dead piece of technology that I can’t wait to tell people about in 20 years. Almost like pagers which were just before my time ha

3 watts of power. You could call the moon with one of those things.
