I have a '16 sr5 trd Offroad and want to add auto on headlights I've got the sensor and light switch on order. Is this a straight plug and play add on? Or does the dealer have to do something to the ecu?

    Ben welcome to Tundras.

I haven't heard of anyone doing a conversion but haven't researched it at all either.

It definitely doesn't sound like an easy job. What kind of switch will you use? Different turn signal stalk?

    Please post up your results!

I've only done a Second Generation, but changing the signal/light stalk should be straightforward. If you already have wiring connecting the sensor at the base of the windshield to the main ECU, you should be set. If not, you will have to build that and install it yourself.

@eledobleu did a write up when he did it to his truck. I don't see his write up on this forum, maybe he'll add it. But, it is easy to do. You need to buy a sensor (located on the center dash speaker) and new light stalk.

Here you go. Hope this helps. I'll eventually do this mod. Should be plug and play but you need to take the steering wheel off. Let me know how it goes.

Wanted thank #eledobleu ... for a great write up on the aforementioned link.

Just installed on my 2017 Tundra SR5, was nervous since it is only a couple weeks old and less then 800 miles on it.

Got the final part in yesterday and installed today. Working great.

Took me about 1.5hrs to complete. Stopped a few times to step back, have a smoke and calm nerves, lol. Once I got all apart, putting back together was easy. Just remember to pull the tape off before you put the steering wheel back on (can not confirm or deny I did that).

    Total cost:
Headlight switch - $111.01 from OEM Part source
    Sensor - $11.77 from eBay

Everything works great and I am able to adjust the sensitivity by going to the following:

apps > setup > vehicle > vehicle customization > lights

Anyone that has done this mod had any issues with it? I've read several posts from the higher end trucks having issues with their factory auto lights.

I believe the turn signal stalk was possibly the issue, (I know this is what several of you bought to add the feature to your truck).

I know this is an old post, but for those of you still wondering about this, it's worth every ounce of work. I just did it in my driveway, took me less than an hour. Follow the write up on tundra talk and go to town, take your time and enjoy. So satisfying to have auto lights.

Did this to my 2013 Rock Warrior. Worked like a charm. My Rock Warrior was not pre-wired for this btw. If anyone interested, I have extra sensor, connector, and crimp on leads I can sell if interested. Just PM me.

So we would just need the turn signal stalk?

The stalk and a little bit of wire would be what is needed.

I’ll be adding this mod to the truck. It’s a feature that I’ve had on previous vehicles that I’ve gotten used to.

Auto headlight mod, seat covers, drop down rear seats mod, 2018+ LED Headlights, USA flag Tundra tailgate decal (many compliments on red Tundra), Alpine ILX-F509, front Focals, JL 10TW1-4s, Waxoyl undercoat, StartX remote start.
So late to the party, but my '16 SR5 is new to me and I just did the mod. So easy and well instructed at Tundratalk. New grille, '18 LED headlights, Alpine ILX 507, Focals amps and subs, StartX remote start all to come. Love this forum and all that it offers! Thanks all.

So even though your 2013 wasn’t prewired, you still followed the directions in the original post? I have a 2012 that I want to do it to? What did you have to do different on the instructions to fit our truck with no preside?

What you are basically doing is adding the sensor, running 3 wires to it, and then terminating those 3 wires into terminal block J3. Of course, you're adding the new stalk but no special new wiring for the stalk.

Where did you obtain your terminal block J3?

Make sure you refer to the PDF instructions. The J3 terminal block is already mounted in vehicle underneath steering column. You will be pushing 3 terminals into the pin locations shown in the instructions.
