Yeah the tailgate anti theft mod is one of the most popular mods on the Tacoma site, complete with video and link to the hose clamp. Any extra work the thief has to do to pull it off will make him skip yours and go to thousand other trucks that will just pull right off.

There was beer involved. Big mistake. I made it past the " Lets all get a tattoo now that we made it thru USMC boot camp" at a San Diego tattoo dive shop, and all the other tattoo shops I bypassed in Japan and in Manila, Philippines, (real good tats in Japan by the way, the best I've seen, especially the tats on the four "missing one pinky finger guys" I met and drank 5 million beers within a few hours at Hikari Beach, Tokuyama, 1982, hint= Yakuza, actually pretty cool guys. Poured me onto the train back to my base in Iwakuni. Bucket Lister day now that I look back at it. Bucket List #2="Get totally blitzed with 4 crazy drunken Yakuza dudes at a Japanese beach beer garden and survive". Check), only to get this stupid tat of my ex's name in Hollywood after being married eight yrs only to get divorced 6 months later. Actually I'll blame it on early stages of climate change, couldn't have been the beer. :homer:
(Bucket List #1="Enlist in the Marine Corps and make it out alive" check)

I got the idea from TW. Best Taco site. Went to that site daily but never signed on. Did things right this time around with Tcom. The only other site I am on regularly is Linkedin and ASQ forums.

My buddy got his tailgate stolen at Home Depot. He went in, got some 2 by 4's and 20 min later no tailgate. No one saw anything. He was lucky to get the same year and color tailgate for his 2012 Tundra two weeks later at the local "Pick and Pull" in San Antonio. Geez.
Clamps do work as a deterrent.

I doesn't take long at all. They'll take it in broad daylight. Anyplace like H Depot, Lowes , don't drop your tailgate to load up until you are back outside. Or a have someone tag along to wait with your truck.

I knew I wasn't day dreaming. Seriously that news bit got me curious. Search "tailgates" or "truck tailgates" on CList and see whats there. Crazy. I know guys that use 5th wheel setups but they keep their frigging tailgates.

It might still be worth it to add the after-market universal tail-gate lock...in case they get the lock open on the tail-gate they would still have to get the lock off to get it off completely, and would probably give up by then.

Sometimes opening up a can-o-worms is a good thing. (Although now there will be a run on McGard tailgate locks I'm thinkin)

Went to Pep Boys to pick up McGard tailgate lock that I "reserved and paid for" online. Got down there. Someone came in and bought the last two they had. (one of mine apparently) Bringing me one from another store. Auto Zone, Advance
Auto, and O'reilly's had none in stock. The Pep Boys on the other side of town is almost sold out too. Probably because of the news cast. A lot of trucks have tailgates that can't lock and/or left down a lot.

I searched tailgate on my local craigslist and was surprised at how many listings it returned. I'm sure some, maybe even many of them, are legit but damn

I just remembered we were doing karaoke at some point. We were singing Sinatra and Elvis stuff together. Everybody loved it. ( they had no choice, heh heh) Too bad there weren't cell phones then. Er, maybe not. Crazy. :goingcrazy:

The (smart) thieves are probably reading posts like these and picking up the McGard to have the removal tool available.

Your right. If you have a McGard "key" you could remove it faster than the clamp. Way faster.
Edit: After install the McGard would be a real pain to get off. Hose clamp=good. McGard=Better

Matluth you single handily increased sales of McGard by 300% in a week.

Not too late to invest in used tailgates.

Another trick you can steal from Taco World is the second part of the anti-theft for tailgates for those of us who rarely, if ever, take the tailgate off our truck. Pull the side pins that hold the cables / arms for the tailgate. Got to the local hardware store and buy a big enough stainless steel washer to prevent removing the cable...drill it out if needed, and then re-do each side with a washer installed. Now they need both a socket for the hose clamp and a torx bit to steal your tailgate....they will most likely pass on it and get an easier one.....

Update.....went out and looked at the tailgate this am....remembered you need 2 or 3 washers per side, a big one to lock the cable in place and a small one or two to make the shoulder of the Torx bolt longer to allow things to move freely when you add the big washer. I found them in the specialty box section at my local Ace Hdwe and they are stainless steel. If you only do the big washer things will bind when all is tightened up. I found a small washer that was the size of the shank on the Torx bolt and then dremel tooled the inside to fit as it was to small for me to hold in a vise or such and drill out.

That's good to know. That makes sense. I think I already have what I need. Going to to do it after work tomorrow. The pic helps. Thanks.
