Forgot to update this with my experience. I have to say that it was a pain in the ass. I did it in my garage, with truck on the ground, some ramps would have made it slightly better. Having to remove the skid plate is annoying, the cartridge filter is annoying. I will keep on eye out for coupons to have it done next time. It took me about an hour, I also greased my driveshaft zerks during that time. I'd be willing to spend 20-40 bucks more to bring it somewhere, especially since I really only drive about 5k mikes a year. That said, I'm pretty cheap, and capable so we'll see come next spring.

the skid plate is always annoying with any car ...

seems like another stupid thing. never had a car with cartridge.
    thanks for update.

can you throw away the cartridge and install a real oil filter?????

I haven't had to do mine yet, but I'm wondering if it would be worth cutting an access hole into the skid plate to prevent having to remove it next time. Would having an exposed hole in that area be bad?
Another thought is welding the cutout back on with a piano hinge, and some kind of latch to keep it shut.

I'm sure someone makes a remote bypass filter for these trucks. But I bet they are expensive. That's the only way I see it happening.

I think that the newer TRD pro's have a cut out in the skids but I'm not certain.
I think having a cutout would be nice. Only problem is if you did that you'd probably want to change the filter housing from plastic to metal, but those are available on Amazon for a decent price I think.
The hinge door idea would be perfect

Thanks for the help on this guys. Had to grab the filter wrench and was referencing this thread.

Going back to why you do your own oil changes......look at this pic. What’s wrong with this.....only has been serviced at dealer.

Yep, that is the way to go. The miserable little plastic thingy is worthless, had oil running down and off my elbow since I could not get it to latch in place.

The tool shown is the beez neez.

One trick I have is when you drain the oil from the drain plug, use a 4" diameter piece of PVC about 5 inches long, stand it upright in your oil container (if you are using a flat container), absolutely no splashing as the PVC contains the stream of oil.

Its not bad at all once you have done it one time and had the proper cartridge wrench and drain tool with hose. I really like the new cartridge style filter system...zero mess as compared to the old canister filters. Ramps, 5 gallon bucket, drill with sockets to remove skid, torque wrench and know the specs, oil on sale at costco, filters and crush washers are cheap as well as the replacement oem metal housing...cant beat it. I have never enjoyed changing oil this much on my older vehicles.

exactly dude. I'm not sure why ppl on here whine so much about changing the oil on these things. The skid plate even has hooks to hang itself, takes 1 minute to unfasten. To re-install hang it up from its hooks, slide it over and it's back on again. You can even change the oil by just letting it hang too, don't even have to fully remove. It's not rocket science, but the lube techs sure do their share of screwing it up.

Free oil changes, (like everyone else) and never went back to the dealer to use them, not worth the risk or hassle.

My guess is they are getting sand and debris in eyes...always wear goggles when working under vehicles.

I bought an aftermarket skid for easier access to the filter, but otherwise the process isn't bad at all. There's a twist on version of the plastic filter drain that works much better than the push on. The mobil 1 and pureone filters come with it.

very few had any comments on the metal filter cartridge that is available to replace the stock plastic one. Do most replace the plastic one with metal, or stick with the stock one?

I have seen a lot of people opt for the metal upgrade. I haven't had any issues with the stock unit, though. Just use a little finesse and don't get too excited when you are torquing it back on.

Swapped to the metal housing on the Tundra, plan to swap to the metal housing on the wife's camry. As far as oil changes go, its a breeze. Dealerships have let me down far to often on something so simple, i'd rather just do it myself. The hardest part is driving the used oil to the auto parts store for drop off...

Did you remember to swap the metal tube with holes from plastic housing to new metal one?

Of course lol. That was real easy to do as long as you don't gorilla finger the tabs and break them off.
