Seems to be a few things to consider with these things. I have read some wrench’s will break plastic tabs on housing. There seems to be several to choose from ranging from high cost billet models to plastic. Any recommendations out there?

    I have a 2021 model.

    Thanks!!

You gotta have it misaligned pretty bad and put a gorilla grip on a breaker bar to break those plastic tabs. I bet you break the tool first.

Im that guy who royally jacked his housing:wave:
I can tell ya that ya want something solid and as deep as possible. The deeper onto the housing that you can grab the better.

Its so easy to do if the tool is misaligned or if the plastic is just too damn tight

So many people over tighten it. I think all it needs is 20-something pounds. That said, I put in the aluminum housing anyway.

That looks like a good option. I like the wrenches that interface with both the flutes and tabs, but always wondered if I could find one with a little tighter tolerances than my cheap autozone brand. Hasn't let me down in 20 plus oil changes though.

I've never had an issue at all with this from Advance auto, fits snug, and low cost. And in fact, I just now got in the house from changing my oil and saw this thread. https://shop.advanceautoparts.com/w...e/2296/large/11373219_wmr_w54120_pri_larg.jpg
    It's Toyota specific also.

Edit because I guess I don't know how to do what you guys did above. Its this. And by no means do I support low quality tools, just saying, it works perfectly.

Thanks for all the recommendations. Is the drain tool needed and what is the part number for the filter that is used? Looks like I also need a pack of crush washers. This will be my first oil change with this truck. At about 5000 miles. Will get my free one at 10000 miles.

A drain tool is provided with most of the filters. The motivx drain tool isn't really all that great for the $$ spent, in my opinion. Sometimes, I don't even drain the oil separately from the filter housing, and just let it make a mess when I remove it. The drain tool provided with the Mahle OX 554 D2 oil filter is the best I have ever used. Those filters are on Rockauto.

The Toyota filter number is 04152-YZZA4. Some of the online Toyota dealers sell a case of 10 filters and include the drain washers with them. Toyota part number is 90430-12031.

    Good luck.

The drain tool is handy but not required. A drain nipple comes with the new filter, and I use an empty bottle to push it in. Put the plastic nipple in the top of the bottle, use the bottle to shove it in, oil drains into the bottle. The tool sold by Motivx is kinda trick, though.
