When I was 12, I had some insurance cash I received from a dog bite. My mom gave me the choice of plastic surgery to fix the scars....or buy a guitar. Since I wanted to be Angus Young I bought this late 50's Les Paul Jr. serial 26511. Sadly, my skills fell far short of Angus'. But I still love the guitar.

If anybody has been looking for an Epi 59, Sweetwater has several in stock.

I'm not affiliated in any way, these are just hard to come by. You can view the photos and pick one you like the looks of.

SG body shape. Wide flat neck. 5 digit serial under 42440. That guitar is a 1961. The early Les Paul/SG Juniors generally sound better to me than the Standards, Customs, and Specials because of how much wood is taken out of the very slim neck joint when a neck pickup is added to the guitar. Great guitars. Looks like you've got a repro "Badass"-style bridge. I used to carry my vintage SGs in an 80s chainsaw case, too.

I'm not much of a player but I do like to noodle around every once in awhile and pretend that I am.

This my Reverend Rocco I bought in back in '05 when they were still USA made in Eastpoint Michigan.

    IMG_20181226_170225172_LL.jpg

I mostly plug it into this Roland Cube 30 I bought about the same time.
    IMG_20211206_153151830.jpg

Then I ran across this '68 Princeton at a garage sale several years ago. Snapped it up for a cool $40. Sounds fantastic but still has the 2 prong power cord and could probably use a recap.

The speaker is a '68 Altec Lansing that was in it when I bought it .

Wow @Taco-Blender - that Princeton is a steal. probably some great techs out your way that could dress that thing up for you if you were interested.

I figured someone here might know a lot more than I about my guitar. Terndrerrr from Music City delivers! 1961 Les Paul Jr. it is. As far as sound, my guitar playing friends really like the guitar. But none has the depth of experience to compare to SG models. Interesting comparison. I did have the repro bridge installed way back when but I did keep the original as well. Can't remember what the original bridge is called, but glad to have the original as well. Thanks for the info.

original bridge is probably just a classic stop-bar where the strings are wrapped around.

Sure thing. I’ve had a few early SGs, which were called Les Pauls until ‘63. Les was not happy with what Gibson did to his signature guitar, and they took his name off of it in ‘63 and then called it the SG (which stands for Solid Guitar, meaning no maple cap mated to the body like previous Les Pauls). The Les Paul was reintroduced in ‘68 with the classic 50s single cut shape and maple cap.

I’ve had two ‘61 Standards with original PAFs, a ‘62 ebony block Std, and a ‘64 Jr. in the rare Polaris White finish. Great guitars, but the Jrs are my favorite.

Correct. The original bridge is as you describe - stop bar with strings wrapped around.

Yeah, we have a tech here that's supposed to be pretty good. I have the soldering skills, and know how to drain the caps, and may just do the work myself one of these days.

Funny thing was, I knew what it was the minute I saw it. So, I asked the lady "how much?". She says "I looked online and a New Fender Princeton is about $125, so I'll take $40 since this one looks a bit beat up" (This was prior to Fender coming out with Princeton Reverb Reissue and all the new Princeton's were solid state).

Man, I couldn't get that 40 bucks out of my pocket fast enough!

Even better. I wish I knew a little bit about circuitry. I know enough to send it off instead of trying repairs myself. Thats a great yard sale find. Those stories are harder to come by these days.

Looks like the boys are back in town.

TL/DW: possibility of some US made tubes for guitar amplifiers on the horizon. That'd be killer.

I have around 14-15 tube amps and a meager stash of tubes. This is welcome news.

I got what has to be the coolest birthday gift... maybe ever.

I'm trying to learn about it, if any of you know much about 80s Fender amps please let me know. It's a 65 watt with a tube, apparently it can play very loud, loud enough to gig with is what I was told. I'm away from home so I can't plug in yet, but really looking forward to it.

I got home really late last night, or really early this morning. Plugged into that amp and set the volume, gain, and the other volume to "2". Holy crap it's loud! I turned the volume on my guitar to 3 and it's right about what I play at on my 40 watt Vox (with volume almost half way up). Sounds and tone are pretty cool. I'll play more after work if I get the chance.

That is killer. I'd look for a manual just to be sure, but that little line out feature could be nice if you record. DI straight into your DAW which usually kills the speaker depending on the config. So you're able to "crank" the amp and get it in the sweet spot without wrecking your ears or marriage. Sounds like it could be a fun little practice amp. Congrats.

@Darkness thats a cool little amp. I’ve never played one before but I know lots of players who have a special place in their hearts for the red knob Fenders of the 80s. Here’s a link to your owners manual: https://www.fmicassets.com/Damroot/Original/10001/OM_leg_gtramp_Champ_12.pdf

Regarding the Line Out on the front, that is only to drive another amp if you wanted to daisy chain them. You can NOT unplug the speaker from the speaker out jack in the rear. A guitar amp must ALWAYS see a resistance load on the speaker out jack, or you could easily fry your output transformer.

Typically those line outs will kill the speaker out (the manual even suggests as such). Benson Amplifiers model "Vinny" comes to mind. It's an all tube head that can essentially be used as a direct in to record, plugged into an output speaker, or as an overdrive "pedal" in a signal chain.

But yes, never unplug the speaker out.

Huh. I have zero experience with that amp or with any amp with a line out. I see that the manual says the speaker output is disabled when using headphones, but it doesn't say the same for the line out. It says the line out can be used "for more output"...which I took to mean in addition to the internal speaker...as in you can run this to another power amp as well. But if line outs typically defeat the speaker out, then it's probably run after the preamp section and before the power section of the Champ, in which case it doesn't send any signal through the power section or OT.

My advice is don't do anything that you might forget about and end up frying something. Too often, people turn on a combo amp after running it to an extension cab, forget to plug the internal speaker back in, and fry their OT because they're playing and fiddling with knobs on the front of the amp trying to figure out why they're not getting any sound, not realizing they're cooking the OT.

@Terndrerrr haha exactly. My general rule of thumb when dealing with tube amps is that I dont do anything that I haven't seen someone else do to the exact same amp first, and survive. Real easy to ride the lightning with those things.
