Well, here I am in Santa Cruz packing up to head to Fresno. I open the windoor on the shell and loaded some boogie boards. I dropped my keys and they fell between the sidewall and the decked system. My rear shell door is locked and so is the truck. Luckily I’ve always kept a hide a key. However I never thought to use it in the ignition. It opens the door but it won’t start the truck. It’s just turns over constantly. As it is I just installed a remote start with iPhone app, so starting the truck through the phone then using the key to place the ignition in the on position works. I’m so pissed, and thankful at the same time. At least I can get the on the road. I guess I need to stay in cell range.

Chances in that situation are nearly 100%. Very seldom do dropped things wind up in an easy place to retrieve. The higher the need for said item, the higher the likelihood they wind up wherever all those 10mm sockets go.

A clear tubing with a strong cylindrical magnet stuck in one end makes a great fishing tool that is both somewhat flexible and somewhat ridgid.

    UPDATE:
I have that exact tool and tried that and also my telescoping magnet thingy mabobber. Made it home to Auburn and grabbed the spare keys. Had a little panic in Fresno as the remote start kept the starter engaged. Got it shut off and re-started while getting gas. Ooof. Anyway, on the trip i wasn't able to put enough pressure on the tailgate to move the camper door (locked) without worry of damage, as it is for sale just in case anyone is interested. :) Got home, unlocked everything and tried the grabber tools first. Thought i could hear the keys but wasn't confident. I ended up pulling the rollers off the decked drawer and pulled the drawer out. I now keep the allen wrench in my truck btw. There they were just under the drawer. Took me all of 5 minutes. If I was more pressured I could have done it in the field but figured i could tackle it later. Almost got there at one point.... but all is good.
