I got my transmission cooler installed, and got fleeced at the local RV show on a Keystone 175BH.

I have read that the integrated controller may not be the best. The dealer doesn't carry the P3, which I've also read is the best. Should I preemptively buy the P3 and have it ready when I pick up the trailer in a few weeks, or should I wait and see, which could potentially mean I would have to leave the trailer and get it later.

I thought the brake controller was improved at some point on the 2.5 gen. I want to say maybe for 2018?

I would use the stocker and see how it works. I have heard of no issues on the 2022s. I still rock my stock controller and my 2016 and it works fine. The P2 is better, but keep your money and see how the stock unit works for you.

Sounds good, I had just heard about the controller not working from the beginning. My RV fleecer is over an hour away, so I'd be a bit upset with Toyota if I had to drive back to pick her up.

I used a P3 on my Tacoma, then when I bought my Tundra I've just been using the integrated brake controller. I have zero complaints and prefer the clean implementation of it. Works wonderfully for me.

There were a few posts that even with the IBC software upgrade, it still didn't work ... But maybe each car or each year is different.

Toyota doesn't seem to have the brain to fix the cam tower seep and/or a simple electronic thing like the brake controller.

Curious if there is any lawsuit regarding the IBC since we already paid for it!

I think it might be more of an issue with wiring, brake parts condition, shoe adjustment, and controller adjustment. Always easier to blame someone/something else.

That's true, however many posts regarding IBC not working with brand new trailers and/or people can tow the same trailer with a different car with no issues ... and when they replaced the Toyota IBC with Tekonsha P2 or P3? no issues!

I have a P2 in my 4Runner, my truck factory controller works just as well with the same trailer. Just my experience.

You would think it should be a simple thing to test. Isn't there a simulator for testing it?

I don't think the truck is detecting any weight or load. It's just a voltage ramp (depending on your IBC settings) when you apply brake ...

I haven't done much research but there must be a simulator gadget
to connect and test without having to tow anything and compare the voltage ramp with P2/P3 or industry standards and spec if any.

Yeah, that's what I've been reading, which lead me to the question.

I just did a quick search.

There are at least 2 types of brake controller:
    1- inertia-based
    2- time-delay

Time delay is a simpler system and what I discussed in my previous post.

inertia-based is more complex and better for example if going downhill vs. uphill and will apply more or less gain as needed ... Time-delay applies voltage and increasing amount of gain based on time and does not take into account the momentum (more momentum going downhill vs. up).
Inertia-based will adjust the gain based on momentum. More gain/brake if going downhill and less if going uphill.

do we know what kind is the Toyota IBC?
Sounds like P2/3 are inertia-based. Have a feeling Toyota is the same.

like others said maybe the issues are resolved by now or its year or luck dependent ... Make sure there are no software updates!

I would read all other threads and then decide. If you don't want to spend time and $ to replace the junk which is understandable ... Tow your trailer nice and easy on a flat and quiet road and test ... I wouldn't risk towing it on a highway or freeway for the first time without testing it. Definitely no up/downhill for the first time.

There was an IBC software update in 2018. There were a ton of issues before the update.

    Not much…yet.
A trailer that small, I would not hesitate to give the factory controller a shot. I had issues with my ‘18 controller, but my ‘17 has been as good as any.

Unfortunately it's an hour on the interstate to the fleecer. I was actually hoping to take her camping at soon as I get her.

Integrated BC on the Tundra is inertia and progressive. That’s why when you test the gain you need to be going above 20 Mph - the full voltage won’t be put out at walking speed.

With that said, the Prodigy is an example of how an aftermarket part from a company that specializes simply perform better. It’s more sensitive and responds better to inertia changes.

For the original poster, their 2021 already has the latest update. It was part of the base build for 2019 on.

I've used both the P3 on my older Tundras and loved it, but the IBC on my 2020 worked well too. I haven't used it on my 2021, but I expect it to do just fine. I wouldn't worry about replacing unless you find a problem.

I have a 21 SR5 4x4 CrewMax Tundra and a Keystone Passport 175BH. I towed it using the factory controller from SouCal to CDA Idaho without any issues. It should work fine for you.
