Refinishing sliders/steps with bedliner

I just bought my new (to me) tundra 2 weeks ago. It came with the n-fab podium steps on it. The coating is flaking off. I checked with my local line-X place and they quoted me $425 to finish them (premium line-x because it will be exposed to the sun). I'm assuming a lot of that would be labor to prep them before putting line-x on them. The sad part is i can get a new pair of steps from n-fab for $500 already coated. From my research it doesn't sound like they have good luck with their coating staying on.

I've looked and i can get a kit from Amazon for $150 (

Raptor Truck Bed Liner) I have no problems spraying these myself, but i just want to make sure that what ever i put on it is going to last.

What have you had put on your sliders/steps and how is it holding up? I'm just looking for options on what to do.

 

Actual use of sliders means they’ll get scraped, dented, and jacked up. I use several cans of Rustoleum every spring to recoat mine along with the rest of the armor - although I probably should start doing it in the fall. Cheap and easy.

 

I have to re-coat a few spots of my WKOR sliders. Going to have to use a wire wheel, sand it down, and then if I want to get fancy with it, then I'll add primer then rustoleum.

 

I used Raptor liner on many parts of my truck including the sliders. The flat areas exposed to the sun definitely will fade over time.

 

As much as i would like to off-road more, it's unlikely that they get scraped/dented much from me hitting them. They would more than likely get hit with rocks from the road.

Other than fading, is it holding up pretty good?

 

I used the bedliner stuff from Harbor Freight (forgot the brand) on mine. Did about 3-4 coats with a foam roller. Came out perfect. My step rails were from Amazon and only $200ish. The rubber pad glued to the top was coming off so I stripped them off, sanded down the THIN "powdercoat" and rolled on the bedliner stuff. Still looks new 6 months later. I think the stuff at Harbor Freight is about $50.

 

Absolutely. My bumpers were done three years ago. They’re great. I love the stuff. Honestly the fading isn’t that bad. But on my old steps I sprayed, the fading was more prominent on the actual step area where everyone placed their feet.

 

That's good news. I think that is the route I'm going to go. I'll start with the steps and then do the bumpers.

 

You won’t be disappointed. I used plastidip over the chrome, then primer and Raptor liner. The plastidip prevents the liner from chipping off the chrome.

 

That is interesting that you put plastidip down first. does it stick better to the chrome than the primer or liner?

 

Yes. The liner won’t stick to the chrome for long. People will say to just scuff up the chrome and then use primer. But that won’t last. The plastidip is like a pliable spray that will adhere to the chrome. The liner will stick to it then.
