I'm a custom Home Builder and this is always challenging to match existing to new floors. Are they Pre engineered or Real wood floors? How old are the existing floors?

Just for future reference engineers floors & tile often have die lots numbers. So if you buy the same brand floor several months later from the same place they can still look different.

When I did mine, I took a piece of the hardwood into Sherwin Williams along with the wood I was using and they color matched the stain. That was just oak so I'm sure it was easier, but take it to a paint store and see if they can match it.

Just my opinion but I wouldn't try to match the stains but look to find an accent color/stain for the stairs. Matching is a PIA.

I like the colors in the floor and if it were mine I would try and pull some of the darker color out of the floor for the stairs.

Exactly what I was thinking. When it's two different surfaces and material it's hard to get a proper match. So instead go with a color or shade completely different to accent. Like with what you said grab one of the darker colors in the hardwood floor laminate and accent the steps with that.

Plus it'll really make those stairs pop!

Blunt answer: it won't ever "match".

Some already great suggestions on making it work though. Could you post pics of the stairs?
Depends on the treads vs the riser color which will impact just the way the stairs look on their own. White risers will accentuate / showcase the darker grain of the stain. If the treads and risers are the same stain it will really bring out the red tone of the stains when looked at with your floor.

The best way to match would be to replace the treads with the same lot engineered wood. That is if that's your goal. Engineered "same lot" treads with white risers would also look nice.

Are you talking about the stairs and the landing not matching?

I used the EXACT same wood stains (Cabernet) for my Stairs, base trims, and wood floors. Everything seems great BUT the floors color is so DARK. 6 months later I re-sanded and stained the floor with Cherry Red. Much better.

yeah. It's very close but I guess we were hoping for perfect match but then we are working with 2 different materials: laminate and real wood.

Different wood species will take the exact same stain color and look different. So trying to get even two samples of the same wood the same stain can look different. It's never a simple process unfortunately.

Maybe a carpet runner up the stairs and landing so you only show maybe 2-3 inches of wood on the edge? I've done it a lot with good results, additionally, the systems for putting the laminate on the stairs are pretty lame, and make the stairs really noisy. I also use runners on stairs for noise and my dogs, no slipping.
