Oh gurus of the internet, please help with my failure/confusion.

I went to install bilstein 5100's on my 2015 2wd Tundra and wasn't even close. I got the shocks off fine, got the springs transferred over to the Bilsteins using spring compressors.....which is where I noticed the huge issue. The spring was compressed a good 2.5-3" in order to get the hat on. I trundled forward undeterred, got the shock back into the car and went to button everything up only to be faced with the inevitable: the spring was fully compressed and therefore could not give the motion necessary to reinstall the hub onto the lower arm. Basically, by installing the bilstein 5100's the spring was fully loaded.

What am I missing...this is driving me nuts????!!!!

    Notes:

I checked and double checked the parts were correct
I was using the middle setting

Is it possible you put the adjustment collars on upside down?

Worse yet, kept comparing the strut I wasn't installing to install instructions (that one was was put together correctly). I'm an idiot. Thanks bobeast.

I just had 5100's installed on my truck last week. When I looked at that collar, I thought it would be easy to install it upside down. In fact, that's the first thing I looked at when I got my truck back - to see if it was installed properly. Post some pictures!!

Yes, pictures would be nice for those of us planning to do this in the future. I would hate to make the same mistake you did :)
