2016 Tundra w/ 38 gallon gas tank question....

I was going to run it up to 600miles on the tank, but I was right at a 1.88/gal gas station lol. I still had a little ways to go before coming back to that area, so I just filled up. .

I'm going to push it out to 600 this go 'round though.

 

With these numbers you have got to be a flat lander and driving nothing but highway

 

After reading 0 miles to empty I have driven 33 miles before filling up. I know someone here drove it till empty. So how far can you go after 0 miles to empty?

 

the display is an estimate. calculate your MPG's by hand and you will know how many gallons are left when the low fuel light comes on. for me, there are 8 gallons left which is about 120 miles.

 

When my low fuel light comes on I have 7 gallons left. I figure the last couple gals may not be possible to pick up but I have pushed it 70 miles and refilled with 35.5 gals. Someday I will push it to 80 to 85 miles just to know for sure where the bottom is. I always carry a full 5 gal can in the back.

 

I've run out of gas once. It was low and parked off camber. Probably had less than 2 gallons at the time. Wouldn't start after sitting for several hours. Typically, I'll go another 100 miles after the light comes on. Wish I could reprogram the low fuel light... Over the past 45k miles it looks like 34.xx is the most gas.

Love the big tank. My 2010 has such poor range. This truck gets over 500 miles regardless and that's with a 4WC in the bed.

 

My 2016 4x4 acts the same way. Low fuel comes on way to early and I've gone at least 50 miles after it hits 0. Most I've put in the tank is 35 gallons. My wife's 07 Camry does the same thing. Never ran either of them to the point where I had to push it to a gas station. I used to have a 99 4Runner (before all this computer stuff) with an 18 gal tank and several times I got more than 18 gal in it without running it dry. Moral of the story is the Toyotas will go far after the computer says your at 0. Like it was said before, it's a good cya measure. I've never burned up a fuel pump but I'll probably think twice the next time the low fuel light comes after reading this article. This was a good and informative read.

 

Why push it ????...I fuel up regularly around 1/4 tank

 

Looks like the most miles on a tank has been 586. Who's going to beat it?

It can easily get over 600. Before the camper I'm sure I could have gotten over 650 miles. The warning lights are rather concerning though!

 

Hey guys, I dealt with this same thing when I bought my 15 Crewmax. Could not understand how I could never put more than 21 gallons in a 26 gallon tank when it said 0 miles to empty. It is just the way Toyota does their Tundras. Their have been numerous explanations, like keeping the pump submerged and all these others, but I have found truthfully it is just something Toyota does with their Tundras to keep people from running out of gas. I tested it while keeping a spare 2 gallon tank in the back. Sure enough, about 60 miles after (0 miles to empty, I ran out). So, I just reset my trip odometer when my light comes at (20 miles to empty) and know that I need to get get some gas between 60-80 miles

Low Fuel level warning light:
Standard fuel tank - indicates remaining fuel is approximately 4.0 gal. or less
Large fuel tank - indicates remaining fuel is approximately 5.7 gal. or less

 

With the Transferflow 46g tank, remaining fuel is around 9 gal.

I supposedly have a 38 gallon gas tank and when the low fuel light come on and the gas gauge reads almost empty I fill the truck tank and the most it ever takes is 28 gallons. A 10 gallon reserve is a little bit excessive, what is the point of a 38 gallon tank. I had the smaller tank in my platinum edition and it did not have the same issue with the miles till empty, low fuel light and fuel gauge. I have contacted servco as they handle complaints for Hawaii and will let you know what they say.

 

Since I'm new to the Tundra world, I'm wondering how full do you all fill the tank? Do you fill till the handle clicks off and call it good or do you "top it off"? I ask this question because in my '04 Silverado with a 34 gal tank, I am usually able to "nurse" 2.5 MORE gallons of fuel into the tank after the handle clicks off for the first time. I've never overfilled the Chevy tank so fuel cannot "burp" into the tank, but then with over 220k miles, this pickup has never needed a charcoal canister replaced either. Does anyone know if the Tundra is similar in the fuel system being able to be topped off? On my last fill up with the Tundra, I didn't add any fuel after the first click off, but also noticed the fuel gauge came off the full mark really early too. Where as, on my very first fill up, I nursed in an additional gallon before remembering I was in a different truck...What are you all doing?

 

I believe it is a mistake to top the tank off. I have read posts about having to have trucks taken to the dealer for repair

 

Complain to servco if you choose, but this is just a design feature (that sucks), not a failure.
Learn to ignore the “miles to empty”.
If you are getting 15mpg then you can get 570 miles out of your 38 gallon tank without having to walk (in theory).

My 2017 4x4 has 10 Gal when the tank reads empty and 0 distance to go. I run long trips (MA to Nebr) and like to stop as little as possible. Carried an extra gallon with me on last trip, and had the piece of mind that if it did run out, I had gas. Finally got down to the point where the Tundra took 35 gallon at fuel stop, a little over 540 miles. Normally get around 15- 15.5 mpg, so that was the expected.
I thought Toyota put a 28 gal fuel gauge in a 38 Gal tundra. However, after reading this thread, it seems it would have been even worse if that was the case.
At least threads like this give me a better idea of what "normal" is for everyone.

Looks like I will stick to ODO reading to fill the tank, about 500 miles a tank should be good.

I have a better fuel gauge on my 2016 BMW GS, and that one bother me to no end!!

usually if you overfill the tank some of the extra fuel runs into the charcoal canister which if that happens too many times ruins it which will affect your fuel systems sensors.

 

At least BMW finally fixed their fuel gauge issues. I had a 2008 R1200GS and had the fuel strip replaced twice under warranty, I still never trusted it.

 

You are correct. If you keep filling until you see gas in the filler neck it will make its way into the evap canister (plastic box the size of a shoe box) which is designed to contain vapors, not liquid fuel. One or maybe the second click should be it, especially if you park the truck shortly after.

 

Wow... And here I thought I was crazy!!
I had an '04 for 14 years. 26.4g tank and I would regularly put 25g in it.

Just got an '18 and it was reading 11 miles left so I went to the station to fill it up. Got about 28g in it which happened to be right at $100 and the pump stopped. I thought it was a $100 limit, not a full tank! So I inserted my card again and went to pump. Hell...I have 10 more Gallons to fill!! Handle kept shutting it off though, so I thought it was a pump issue. Turned the truck back on and went to the next pump in line. Put in my card... Pin# and started to fill. Handle kept clicking though. WTF?!?!
Did I somehow get a messed up truck that has the upgrade package but NOT the 38g tank? I'm gonna go complain to the dealer!!

So should I be worried about the fact that I tried to squeeze that extra gas in there?

Man, my '04 was so much better in this regard. Tank readings were much more accurate, and I never had issues with vapor or whatever bc I would over-fill it at least a few times per year.

Although one thing I HATED about my '04 was that I had to actually hold the gas pump handle the whole time or it would come out of the tank and fall to the ground.
