Hey everyone, I have noticed over the last few weeks a whining noise when accelerating. It happens for a few seconds right before it shifts gears. I read a few threads about the gasket on the air intake. Only thing is I didn’t notice this noise for the first 30,000 kilometres and have not changed anything with the air intake or filter. I will upload a video I took. My phone is just sitting on the dash in the video and I think it’s pretty noticeable but maybe it’s normal? It happens twice in the video after I turn and start to accelerate right before it shifts gears back to back. If anyone has any ideas on what it could be any feedback is much appreciated.

commenting so I can follow. Mine makes that exact same noise VERY occasionally but hasn't the last few times I drove it. It was much colder last time I heard it. when l I was researching and came across a post that said maybe it was a belt tensioner. For reference I have Bilstein 5100's up front on the top setting. I was wondering if the noise was transmission and worried about taking it in to Toyota for warranty work because of the slight lift. Either way it for sure sounds like its up front.

Yes, mine does not do it all the time either. It took me a few days to get a good video of it because most times when I had my phone ready to record it wouldn't make the noise.

I took the truck into the dealer and showed them the original video. They kept it for a day and said they could not reproduce the noise. I drove it home and heard it instantly so I took a good video of the engine while I was parked in my driveway. Anyone have any ideas based on this video? I will take it back to the dealer and show them this. I feel like they can't turn me away based on this.

This might be a stretch, however my 2013 made a similar whining noise under acceleration when using the K&N or TRD reusable engine air filters. These filters are oiled and have to be cleaned and reoiled when they get dirty. Hopefully this gives you something to check off, could be as simple as replacing the engine air filter.

    Pretty things
My 5.7 does this on cooler mornings until the engine warms up a bit. Sound like an accessory or idler pulley to me.

I figure it will get bad enough to where I can pinpoint it some day. I also don't have to worry about my warranty expiring...because it already did.

Be sure to pass along the good info, whoever successfully fixes the culprit!

The dealer thinks it’s the bearing for the fan although I asked how confident they were that was the issue and he said that’s what we need to start with. So I guess we will see. The part has been on back order so I have not got it changed yet. Mine also only does it when it’s cold out, now that the weather is warmer it will only make the whining in the morning when it’s cold.

I have been having the same issue. It just started out of the blue last week and it seems to be getting worse. Really bad when starting cold (both in park and when accelerating), and when driving from stop or at lower gears. Seems less pronounced after driving for about 30 minutes or so, but still there. I haven't noticed any other power issues or anything, except that the idle seems to be effected some. Let us know what's going on if anyone finds out. I have a mechanic visit scheduled for next week. I'll update when I know something.

Mine is still doing it now that the weather is colder outside again. So I guess that rules out the fan bearing they did last spring. Although it might have helped some as it doesn’t seem to be as loud as it was in the video so I am guessing it is something to do with the fan. The next time I take it in for a service I will mention it again to see what they say but since it is not always there I know they will say it never did it when they test drove it.

Any updates on this noise? I just got my 2015 trd pro a few weeks ago and it makes this noise. Brought it to the dealer but of course it couldn’t be replicated that day.

Feeling the fan, fan bearing, clutch. Honestly it sounds like one of those old flex fans we used to run on our musclecars for a few extra ponies, which points me to the fan area.

Interested here too. I'm changing my front differential fluid this week so we'll see if that's related at all (dubious)

No update other than mine still does it. I’ll post a video I took last spring before they changed the fan bearing. It does not do it as bad as it is in the video but I still hear it from time to time always at the same rpm

It’s weird I’ve looked at every thread I could find and nobody has seemed to find what the actual issue is with the noise. I thought maybe an alternator pulley but if you have a 2020 there’s no way it would go bad that soon

Yea I’ve only heard it maybe twice over the last month. And it didn’t last long. It’s weird…it seems multiple people have this issue but nobody seems to have had it fixed or knows what the problem is

Just started having this same sound about 3 weeks ago. I’ve only heard the noise 4 times all after driving for at least 30 minutes.

Anyone get any traction on figuring this out? It was, of course, not my front differential fluid needing a change, as it's continued after. Only happens when it's cold out here in MN, and there's still cold components. Engine idles up to warm just fine in ~5 minutes (love the remote start) but it whines until I've actually driven it a few miles. Usually after 2-3 miles it's gone. It's not consistent either. Only shows up sometimes under acceleration.

Engine air filter I'm using isn't an oiled TRD or K&N but a Wix, if it matters, and is fresh within the last 8k miles/4 months. Believe in changing all that stuff before cold weather lands so I can avoid as much work on the vehicle in the cold as possible.

I have a 21 and live in MN. I started hearing the same noise not too long after having the truck. Mine as well only seems to do it when it's cold. I does it around 2100-2300 rpms. That is also the same rpm range I can hear the whistle if I am driving in our warmer months. I have yet to mention it to a dealer as it does go away once the truck warms up, and I feel it is related to the throttle body gasket with the screen. I have never heard both the whine and whistle at the same time. If it's cold it's the whine, if it's warm it is the whistle. I am far from a mechanic, but I bet if I or you all were to switch out that gasket with a screen, things would change. My two cents.

Same sound on my 2020 sequoia. It modulates up and down with the throttle just like in that video. Anyone figure this out? I have my 20k mile oil change at the dealer coming up and plan on showing them the same video noise.

    Dry bearings usually growl.

In my other, non-Toyota vehicles a similar sound was coming from power steering pump. One was cavitating, because PO filled it with ATF where it was asking for a special hydraulic fluid. Fixed with a proper PS fluid flush. The other pump was simply worn and needed a replacement.

I don't have the owner's manual near me, can't check the fluid spec. But if anyone topped up the PS fluid reservoir with ATF, even just a bit, that would be enough to create fluid separation conditions in the pump and cause a cavitation.

My 2016 is ATF for power steering regardless, but the whining I heard was going up and down coinciding with rpms - I just swapped back to an OEM engine element yesterday, we'll see if it shows up again.

Edit: plus, whining when very cold on acceleration superceded my most recent power steering fluid change, and I had OEM ATF in it before, and used Valvoline MaxLife this time.
