I get it that these are 1/2 ton trucks and aren't meant to tow fifth wheels, but I laughed out loud when I saw this commercial and read the small print. Then why advertise it? Might as well have it towing the space shuttle!

    …and this isn’t the first commercial…

Why bother Toyota if you can’t really do it…

I'm willing to bet they put that text on every towing ad, even if it's towing a 6' aluminum trailer with 2 pillows in it.

It was an actual Toyota commercial. The guy picturing himself driving it says “go big or go home”. :der:

You do realize, they make 5th wheel trailers for half ton trucks. They are all super lights with a low hitch weight. The camper in that picture is not very big, in the scheme of things towable. The trailer in that picture is literally marketed as a 1/2 ton towable trailer.

I don’t see that one on the trailers website as they all have more than 1 slide out on the drivers side so it could be lighter, but the lightest one they have is 9198lbs dry and hitch weight is 1696lbs.

Tow with "many of today's 1/2 tons" does not mean Tundra.

    1,200 lbs in the bed?

    Good luck with that.

This is the smallest model in the lineup. Look at Note 1 at the bottom. This is the “average” pin weight. I can guarantee that is the lightest weight of any build.

Let’s play pretend for a second and that is the actual weight.

1190 lbs is stating pin weight, or 16.5% of overall trailer weight. Add everything needed for a trip into the camper. This will end up being 1000 lbs minimum. The majority of the storage is up front and doesn’t take in account propane tanks, batteries, etc. 1000 lbs adds up quick.

Now we are at 8204 lbs x 16.5%= 1354 lbs.

Now add two people and we can just call it 300 lbs to be nice. We all know most American couples are probably 350 lbs combined….but we will use 300.

    1354+300=1654 lbs.

Now let’s go full out and say one maxes out the capacity of the trailer. Sometimes you have to go wet or leave the site with grey/black water tanks full.

    9995x16.5%=1649 lbs.
    1649+300=1949 lbs.

Pretty sure in the capacity thread for 3rd gens the highest rating was a little over 1500 lbs.

Been pulling a light weight 5th wheel since 2011 with zero issues. From NC to MI, FL, the beaches and mountains. Just takes a few modifications and keeping up your equipment.

To be fair, they don't claim the trailer is half ton towable with all your stuff, or even your family and a full tank of gas included. They just made a trailer that could, technically, be towed (empty) with "many" half ton trucks according to listed maximum specs.

Gotta love creative marketing, carefully selected wording/imagery to make sales without being able to get sued on a technicality! :burp:

Define light weight? Is it actually within payload limits or are you operating under the mistaken belief that all you need is airbags, helper springs, etc. and that will somehow magically increase you payload rating?

I apologize if this sounds combative, but it's an endlessly "discussed" topic with people wanting to use a 1/2 ton beyond its capabilities. The Tundra will drag/tow trailers way beyond it's ratings, nobody denies that, but stopping what you are dragging in shitty situations is a different animal. You say zero issues since 2011, but in that time have you tried to stop going down a grade in low traction scenario like rain, ice, snow, etc.? Have you had to emergency brake for some idiot on their phone pulling out in front of you? These are the times that overloading a Tundra will bite you.

Right at payload and under tow capacity. Modifications are to help with the ride.

Yes it sucks with quick stops, but gearing down and having the brake assist set helps more than closing your eyes and praying. Always vigilant!

I took a quick look at the 2022s and the lowest dry pin weight I saw was 1275 lbs. But they could have rejigged all their models a year or two ago like Coachmen did.

With a non luxury model it might be possible. These are the crewmax numbers for a 2012 (google-fu is weak today) and the DC and regular cab numbers go up from there. Check it out -> https://www.slideshare.net/cabetoyota/tundra-ebrochure

I was talking about the pin weight of the 5th wheel. She has a 2011 tundra.

I followed. I was just showing that there might be enough leeway in a 2011 to actually sit at payload with a 1200-1300 lbs pin. It's be tight, and not much else, but possible in a CM. Much easier if it's a DC or RC.
