GOBI Stealth Rack - Anyone got one?

    I did get it installed. Taking off the stock rails and cleaning everything was more of a PITA that installing the GOBI. Was able to get it all done myself with the exception of having someone help me lift the basket on top of the vehicle.

    Not sure I understand why the "no rise" modification is an additional cost. The racks are all built to order and it seems like it would be less work to make the rack the same level front to back and side to side. Good luck getting it in the spring. I waited 7 months to the day for mine to arrive. Called them probably every other week for status updates, etc. Overall I love the rack. Build quality, fitment, look, functionality are all top notch. The only thing I don't like is the dinkiness of the rear ladder. They make one size ladder for the 4runner and Sequoia. On the 4runner it looks proportionately sized. On the Sequoia... not so much. If it were about 6-8 inches wider it would look and function much better. But again, it is what it is. I've since added a black ARB aluminum encased awning, which pairs well with the rack. If you plan on adding an awning I would go ahead and order a set of awning brackets when you order your rack. I didn't think this thru and fitting the awning to the GOBI rack took a bracket set that ARB didn't offer. As always GOBI doesn't stock anything, everything is made-to-order even brackets and it was going to be 16-18 weeks to get a set of 3 brackets!

    After combing 4runner forums I found a bracket manufacturer named GZilla Designs who makes brackets specifically for GOBI fitment. I spoke with him and he actually developed everything he sells because of his own negative experience with GOBI and add-ons for the rack he has on his 4runner.

    Nice, thanks! That's pretty much what I'm looking for for mine.

    I see what you mean about the lader. But without it the roof rack would be much harder to use. How do you feel about the way it's attached? From what I can tell all the weight is hanging on the top of the door (just two hinges?). Is it and the rear door holding it going to last? Are you worried every time you climb on it?

    Is that the sunroof cover you have installed on top in the middle of the rack? Why not cover the sunroof?

    Don't get me wrong, the ladder is no doubt essential. The ladder is attached well. I weight 165 lbs. and it flexes slightly when you climb it, but still feels secure. Another downfall of the not having a Sequoia specific ladder is you have to install it on the left side. The middle rung is pretty closely aligned with the rear wiper and if you're not paying attention when you're coming down you could step on the wiper instead of the rung. I looked at mounting it on the opposite side, but because it's the same ladder on the 4runner and not slightly wider you can't install it on the right side of the lift gate because it covers the manual key hole. Not that I use the manual key hole, but I ever did need it I would have to remove the ladder in order to access it.

    The gate still functions 90% stock. There are times when it fails to lift all the way (mostly in cold weather). I may in the future order the upgraded pistons from GOBI to replace the stock pistons.

    That is the sunroof cover. We use the sunroof often and when you open it and have the sunroof cover in place is noisy and we life to have it unobstructed incase one of the kids wants to stick a hand or head thru there (while the vehicle is parked). When we travel and camp I put it in place so I have the full length of the rack for packing. It takes all of 2 minutes to secure it in place, so it's not that big of a deal.

    I just got mine installed and found two issues:

    I thought the struts were struggling at the top, but upon closer inspection I found that the lip at the top of the ladder touches the wiring grommet that runs from the hatch to the body (the one on the left when looking up at it). When the electronic lift feels the tension, it stops and backs off a bit and as a “safety feature” disables the electronic closing function, so you can’t use the button to close the rear hatch. I can’t decide if I care or not but it’s something to note.

    also I have the AL offroad roof rack. The top of the ladder touches the rear cross bar when the hatch opens. You can only get about 3/4 of the way open. So I either have to move the crossbar to another location forward on the car, remove the crossbar, or accept the partially opening hatch.

    So for comparison, in previous rigs I’ve owned an expedition rack and a gobi rack.

    pros:
    The crossbar attachment slots are pretty cool. Same ones you’ll find on a prisnu or victory 4x4 rack.

    Installation was a breeze. Once the factory bolts broke loose it all went together quickly and easily.

    Retains normal sunroof operation even with a crossbar directly above it.
    Wind fairing is very effective.

    Very sturdy. I can walk on the bars like you would ceiling joists in an attic.

    Bonus: My first name is Al so the fact that it’s branded as AL Off-road looks legit!

    cons:
    The sidewall design are straight panels. When a good crosswind hits, it is very noisy. Curved sidewalls would eliminate the issue but that’s way more expensive to produce.

    the side rails are split in two pieces that marry together at the center. This was done to reduce shipping costs. The design is plenty strong but if given a choice, I would have preferred to pay a bit more for shipping and get a single contiguous piece of metal.

    They extended the length of the rack too far behind the antenna. Now when I move the rear most crossbar up, I’ll have a lot of material behind it flopping around in the wind. Not ideal.

    I wish there was an option for a steel mesh or plate so I could walk around up there, like the gobi rack. I really miss that as a feature!

    Thanks Al! What made you choose the AL Offroad over the Victory? I dont particularly care for the wind fairing on the Victory.

    I like the Gobi rack, but the price and lead times deter me a little.

    I got AL Offroad because I got in on the initial group buy offering. I was one of the first customers. I can’t pass up a good deal.

    I will say that i that they’re a small family run business. I like supporting that, but… they really struggle with keeping up with demand. Responsiveness can be hit or miss.

    How was the install on these, quick plug'n play? My lift gate is starting to struggle a little now that it's the wittle bitty ladder on for a while.

    How much of a difference did you notice from the factory versions?

    Who's expanded the capacity (width) of their GOBI? I'm about to pick up a Yakima Skybox 21 to carry cargo when traveling with the family. I also need to carry my 14' hardshell paddle board. Without extended rails both will not fit. GOBI has an option, but for 2 bars and 4 mounts it's $300 and the standard ridiculous 18 week wait...

    I've combed thru a couple of 4runner forums and the Yakima RailGrab towers seem to be a viable option. Yakima also makes XL (78") and XXL (86") round bars.

    Not sure if anyone else has needed to add on to the GOBI to extend the carrying coverage beyond the basket.

    It does not. May be a stupid questions but did you mounted the top portion of the ladder based on the instructions (8" from the side I think)? The ladder is notched out for the wiring on the version I have. The left side comes close, but clears the wire harness by 1" or so.

    I did measure and tape, just as the instructions said. Mine did not have a notch. I’d hate to rip up the new tape but maybe that’s what I’ll have to do and notch it out myself.

    Strange. I guess that's the downfall of the "built to order" mentality at GOBI. Someone obviously missed that. I really do with they would have manufactured a separate ladder for the Sequoia. It's really not proportionate to the size of the vehicle. If they would have widened it by about 3"-4" the ladder would have had the option of mounting on either side of the tailgate. With the current design (which is just the standard 4runner ladder) you can't swap it to the other side because it covers the keyhole for manual tailgate operation.

    To expand on my above post about extending the range width wise on the GOBI...

    Seems as tho Yakima makes a mount called the TimberLine Tower that mounts to factory flat or round bars and allows you to slide in round or aero cross bars. These replaced the RailGrab towers, they sold previously.

    I'm picking up a used Yakima Skybox 21 this weekend and with the TimberLine Towers should be able to add 86" crossbars to the GOBI rack so that I can hold the Skybox and 2 of my SUPs side by side.

    Update on my ladder:

    I moved the rear-most crossbar forward on the rails so it doesn't interfere. The side rails do not "flop" in the wind as I thought they would. They're super rigid. They do have a lot of slack, but as long as you're under 7 feet tall you wouldn't notice it.

    I also replaced the hatch door struts with a pair from Stabilus that @UtahBlues posted. That fixed any hesitation and sagging. Everything works swimmingly now. Turns out my unit is notched, just as @Adamdsgn suggested.

    Hello everyone, I know I'm reviving an older thread, but i just felt obliged to say great THANKS to all the participants in this discussion. I just finished installing Gobi stealth (with raiser and sunroof insert) onto '16 Seq SR5.
    Just wanted to leave some info here to anyone who might be interested still. I ordered the rack not from GOBI direct, but from a reseller

    Not only it was about 200$ less expensive than it would be direct from GOBI (not sure, maybe they are getting a discount from Gobi for quantities ordered), but also - I received the rack "only" 2.5 month after ordering. I was getting ready to wait REALLY long, considering some posts here, well - maybe the crisis we are living through decreased number of orders for Gobi and they are now processing faster.
    All in all, great experience with that reseller, the rack and ladder came via different carriers (rack - by a special freight truck, ladder - via fedex, about 1 week later than the rack). Both shipments came straight from Gobi, awesome packaging job by Gobi. No damage and the manufacturing quality is top-notch.
    Installation was probably 3 times quicker than removal of the OEM rack. That removal was such a giant PITA!! Whoever does removal, please please note those original nasty low quality steel (non stainless) bolts with 6star hole in the head for a special pin to be inserted and turned, well - make ABSOLUTELY certain when you are turning your ratchet / wrench, you are PRESSING down on the bolt's head really well (maybe even bumping with a hammer) while turning.
    As I did a mistake and was only supporting the tool while turning - sure enough, the bolt was seized and the 6star pin ruined the bolt's head hole, and it took me literally 2 hours to remove that darned bolt afterwards!! After that setback, I was more careful with other bolts, and even though some bolts unscrewed without problems, some were seized and I had to play tricks on them.
    I would expect better from Toyota, at least should have put anti-seize on that bolt when installing at the factory :(
    Well, as mentioned, installation of Gobi was (almost) a pleasure, apart from fact that black metal got insanely hot in Florida's mid-day sun, which prompted me to wait with installation till the evening.
    There is a bit of annoyance with this sunroof insert, as I could not figure a way of installing it without removing on side's bolts and winged nuts completely, as they do not let the insert to move in between the rack's tubes to allow for the opposite side's resting tabs to be brought under the upper rack's tube on that opposite side. Instruction doesn't really mention anything about that insert. I noticed that insert is not exactly the same on left and site sides, those tabs are straight horizontal on one end and a bit curved downward on another, which made me think there must me some trick in the way which side goes in first, but alas - I just couldn't figure that out. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated !! :)
    I may post pics' how the rack came out, love it a lot, especially having it all installed by myself (well, with some help in bringing the basket up of course).

    I'll echo Floridian's thanks to everyone in this thread. I knew what to expect thanks to you. Though the price shock (after CAD currency conversion and shipping was added by the dealer) was still great :)

    On my 2021 the original rack bolts had locktite on them, which I guess is the opposite of anti-seize :)

    The Gobi came with locktite but I'm glad I didn't put that on, it would have made installation rushed and stressful.

    The Gobi went on relatively easily, but I was annoyed that the nuts and bolts were not all the same size. Maybe they were designed for imperial wrench tolerances, though a couple were clearly a size or two smaller. Most would fit perfectly in my metric wrenches but some would not.

    I broke one of the Gobi bolts by cross-threading it, went to home depot to get a replacement, and what do you know - home depot sells exactly the same stainless bolts and lock nuts :)

    Anyone know what those things on the back are? They look like something is intended to be mounted there, but I can't think what.

    I would risk to guess those plates with bolt holes on the back of rack are for lighting (??)
    I would agree with the idea of imperial vs metric difference here, as I very well noticed the same exact thing, so I carefully inspected the hardware supplied with rack and concluded it was IMPERIAL (well, it said so in manual as I now remember), fortunately I have a good supply of tools for both.
    Ah, another funny thing, to secure those "carriage bolts" (the ones tightened last of all, #10 in instruction), there was NO space for me to put any tool to tighten them on the middle bracket (both sides). So I had to improvise a very long ratchet "extension" by placing those different lengths extenders one into another, thus making about 1.5 meter mega-extender and come from the opposite side of the vehicle with the ratchet to rotate that mega-extender. This did the trick. Possibly, I did not have a better wrench for the job, but the improvisation seems to have worked ok :)

    Couple of thoughts on what you typed...

    Everything from GOBI is built to order (or so we're told). I would imagine since you ordered a stealth rack with riser, which is their standard configuration with no modification that it's easier to get because they don't have to modify the order. Not sure how much you paid, but when I ordered mine it came with the sunroof panel, which is a $275 add on normally. For some reason when I called they were running a promo and asked what add-on I wanted and I said, "can I add the sunroof panel?" and the operator said, "sure".

    I had a similar experience with the stock rail removal. SUCKED. Installation of the GOBI was smooth as butter.

    As far as the sunroof panel is concerned, it's designed so that you only have to loosen all 4 bolts and swivel the table in and you should be able to push to one side and then life the whole panel out. Not too much work, but I think for the money the panel should be easily connected and disconnected without using a tool.

    Overall, love the rack. If the Sequoia only came with a rack similar to that of the GOBI. The TRD Pro rack/basket is a joke. It's just a stretched out FJ basket.

    Did you get the ladder? If not it's a must have if you have this rack. It makes loading and unloading a breeze. Not sure what I would do without it.

    Mine doesn't need tools, it has 3-leaf wingnuts. A 2022 upgrade? I'll never take it off. I hardly ever even open the sunroof cover inside the car. I'd have liked it to be welded in, but it was not an option. So I don't know about how custom made these things really are.

    I did struggle with the installation. Like Floridian said: many of the nuts and bolts are really hard to access. I managed without extensions going all the way to the other side of the rack, but it took me a long time to tighten everything, using various combinations of wrenches, extensions, swivels, and socket lengths.

    Hopefully I only needed to do it once. Earlier today I went to install the replacement for bolt I broke and found that the nuts holding the rack to the brackets are not quite as tight as I'd like. Probably because the rubber between the two parts gave up some of its elasticity since I put it on a couple of weeks ago. And because it's such a pain in the ass to tighten those bolts: for now I'll just trust that the lock nuts are going to do their job.

    My sunroof insert does not need tools either, it has those carriage bolts coming from under the tabs and the winged nut twisting on from the top. So, no problem with accessing / twisting that nut. For me, it was more of a puzzle of how to maneuver the insert into and out of its resting place, without having to completely unscrew one or another side's bolt/winged nut pairs. I was finishing up the fairing installation today, so I didn't have time yet to play with that insert again, I think there IS some way of making it work in and out easier than I managed so far, I'll share if I find a way.
    The Ladder came too, I just didn't get to installing it yet, as I will have to re-arrange my spare tire on the carrier as it is on the left side of the rear door and is in the way of the ladder. So, that spare tire is coming first, to free up the area for the ladder.
    I drove with the rack earlier today (while it still didn't have the fairing attached), and boy there is some HUMMM to the ride now!! (above 60 Mph)
    I'm very much hoping the fairing I just installed will bring the humming sound down, at least somewhat.

    Oh, and while we are at it (I was asking this question on some other forum but that forum was lifeless). Those holes in the roof, where the original rack's bolts were installed, and to which the Gobi's brackets are attached with much nicer bolts + washer with neoprene layer. When I finally took off the original rack, and cleaned those 6 spots with alcohol, I left installation of the new rack for the next day. The SEQ spent the night outside with those holes opened to the environment. Sure enough, it HAD to rain overnight, and in the morning when I was checking the interior I dreaded to see the leakage all over the place, 'cause I thought those holes lead straight into the interior. I was relieved to see no water inside, but I got curious, as for where to those holes are leading? Is there some intricate way of draining water should it get in there, along some channels down to the road? The holes are pretty narrow to look into, so I couldn't figure that out. Thanks for any information!

    I covered my holes with packing tape overnight, knowing my bad luck :)

    I don't know for sure but I suspect the inside of the bodywork cavity dries eventually, since it's not air tight on the inside. That's probably why car bodies rust from the inside out.

    I have the same worry about my sunroof. There's no way that seam is 100% water tight, and whatever gets in there will probably take weeks to dry off.

    I haven't gone on the highway yet, but so far (up to 70km/h) I haven't heard a thing from up there. It took me a while to get the fairing to sit almost completely tight all the way across - it's quite tricky. On my travels this summer I saw an identical Sequoia with a Gobi rack and the fairing was not installed properly - way too much gap at the sides. If you fiddle with it patiently: you can get it to sit much better than it will out of the box.

    The wingnuts are obviously some sort of improvement on GOBI's part I guess. Mine has lock nuts. Once you loosen all fun, rotating the tabs inward and sliding it to one side does the trick for removal. We use out sunroof often so I just keep it installed on the rack mid way back and move it into place when we need the entire basket for cargo.

    Hey all, a little update on Gobi's lead times...they have gotten much shorter. Mine arrived 6 weeks after I ordered it. The sunroof insert came a few days later. My sunroof insert needs tools to remove , it doesn't have the wing nut style. My shipment didn't have the ladder in it, so I had to call them and let them know. The ladder arrived about a week later.
    I absolutely love this rack..It is the best looking (I'm not a fan of the Prinsu style) and so much more functional than the stock crosssbars. I ordered my awning mounts at the same time as well, and have already installed my OVS 270 awning.
    As far as the ladder, I think if it was several inches wider, the extra weight wouldn't let the hatch stay up at all without beefier struts.
