My Platinum finally arrived last week but during the test drive I discovered the AC wouldn't work. It took them a day and a half to figure out the issue. In conferring with engineers on the phone it is said this is yet another "defective part from a supplier" issue. I'm curious if this is a batch problem or I'm just special. Of course, no parts available since the truck is new.

Someone stated the air would not blow hard on high setting, was your air blowing, but not cold?

Yes, it seemed to blow fine, but it was about 30 degrees outside and AC on low cool setting was blowing about 80 degree air. The service dept said, "it doesn't have an ounce if freon in it". After trying to fill it for a couple hours, it was determined to have a leak in the system.

....also, thanks for the greetings guys.

Well, Toyota flew in a team from Texas today to see the issue first hand! I asked the dealership if they packed some spare parts in their luggage, of course not. Tomorrow is one week I've owned a new Tundra that has sat at the dealership.....not a good first experience with the brand! (It still beats my experience with Ram!!!)

Trying to fill for a couple hours? Holy cow these systems probably take a couple ounces!

They made you leave it at the dealership for an AC problem? That sounds optional.

I don't know anything about it, repeating what I was told - the equipment they use to fill the vehicle's system fills extremely slow and performs system checks for leaks every so many minutes. I was told empty to full would take "a good 1 ½ hours". This could be complete BS, so don't shoot the messenger....dunno

Didn't provide any option to take it, as they were already on the phone with Toyota talking about sending engineers within minutes of discovering the problem.

Day I picked up the Tundra, it was a balmy 9 Degrees. Today was first day in over a month we broke freezing. Guess, I will check AC tomorrow.

Just thought I'd give an update - I have been told that Toyota engineers advised my dealership there are now 5 or so of this same issue nationwide, with me being lucky enough to be number one, lol. I am now 15 days into ownership and the truck remains in the service center. I was informed today that it seems to be some kind of standoff between Toyota and the dealership. After the engineers assessed the issue, the dealership was advised to send the defective part back to receive a new one. For reasons I can not understand, the dealership has refused to do this, stating they must receive the replacement part first. So, for two weeks, they play games and the customer with a new $65G truck can't bring it home.

As the clock ticks, I am growing closer to taking the dealership up on their offer of cancelling the sale. FYI, as of this morning, the part has not even been shipped. I think it is safe to say, no matter what issue your new Tundra may have, you will be without it at least 3-4 weeks. I literally just need a hose clamp (I don't believe that is the technical part name, but it's a simple part).

The dealership would love to cancel your sale, they can sell it at a huge markup as used.

I would agree that an unscrupulous dealer would definitely be pushing to get the vehicle back for this reason. I specifically bought from this dealer, even though it's over an hour away, due to their views on selling at msrp and several other ideas of theirs that seem to reflect higher than usual integrity (for a car dealership). I don't doubt for a minute my Tundra would be re-sold within 5 minutes though. I have not decided if I am going to return it or not, I have inquired about rewinding this deal and getting slotted for a future one. I am curious how this request will be handled, as surely I won't fall at the end of the list and be told another 6 month wait or whatever it's at now.

Why exactly can’t you you take the truck while they wait for the part? Of it it is just a hose clamp tell them to cancel and fix it yourself?

I wanted a faster vehicle so I also bought a Chevy SS... because 4 door sedans with big V8’s are hilarious.
If it takes over 30 days in many states you can begin lemon law proceedings. That is what I would do.

I think he's having ac issues.

There's no such thing as "hose clamp" that the average owner could service themselves.

And I wouldn't want to drive around in a new $50-$60k truck, in the winter, with the windows constantly fogged up. You need the AC to dehumidify during the winter to keep the windows clear

Why I didn't take the truck home: 1) it wasn't an option, they want Toyota engineers to have access to it 2) it is too miserable to drive. During the test drive with AC on low, the air temp it was blowing must have been in the 90s. The only way to drive it would be with the system off and windows down, I'll pass on that 3) as soon as I actually take possession and leave the lot, there is no way to re-wind this deal as the dealership has offered, I'm stuck

As far as repairing myself: 1) based on the mere principle of buying a new vehicle and working on it myself, that idea is a no go 2) I feel certain that any work performed by the owner will void the warranty 3) if the part could be obtained at the local Advanced Auto, the master mechanic working on it would have suggested such, hopefully 4) As I previously stated, I used the word hose clamp generically as the dealership did. Apparently, it is a faulty part that is simple in nature as compared to a catastrophic failure, requiring intensive labor and parts to resolve.

At face value, the dealership seems willing to cancel the sale if I request it. I have looked into the Lemon Law for my state if I decide to bring this truck home though. I only need about 10 more days in the shop, lol. I have a feeling a lemon law case will be a lot harder than it seems, though.

The "hose clamp" on an AC system is a crimped ferrule, it takes special equipment to service it.

Here is an update. I finally got to pick up my truck today. Tomorrow would have been five weeks in the shop! I figured out the solution, just a few weeks late. I called Toyota customer service last Thursday; it took me a couple calls and three reps, but I finally got a case manager assigned. This really got the ball rolling, my dealer told me that the regional service manager was calling Monday to find out details of the issue and cause of delay. I was told by my dealership that several asses got a foot in them throughout the supply chain and the part would be shipped asap. Shortly after hearing from my dealership, the case manager called and pretty much said the same thing and that delays are common in our current time, but this situation was unacceptable. The part was shipped, arrived, and vehicle repaired in less than 24 hours!

I will echo what many have said, the quality control from Toyota is pretty much non-existent now. When I picked up the truck today, I noticed 3-5 bulges on each wheel well trim piece. We guess these were caused by the fasteners somehow, but looked terrible. They caught the light like a door ding. It was hard to tell they protruded out until you got close to them. It was also noticed that the window seals on both rear windows need replacing. I am not near as picky as some on here with alignment issues, but those are clearly present as well. The tailgate is 1/4 or so further to one side, as an example.

...hopefully all these minor issues are repaired and this truck turns out to be great. I already put about 100 miles on it and it drives so much smoother than my Titan did.

Do you have pics of the wheel trim? Did they say they'll fix that, tailgate, and window trim?

This is my trim, they told me over the phone it’s fixed but I haven’t received my truck yet to ask how.

We could not get the bumps to show up in a photo. The service manager tried every angle. It was odd, plain as day to the naked eye, but looked perfect in photos. Yes, they said they would order four new trim pieces as well as replace both rear window seals. I did not notice the tailgate until I got home. I will look at it today in the daylight, usually those type of minor things don't bother me...we'll see what it looks like today in light.

I am going to reach out to my case manager today and let them know of the new issues and see what they say. No idea how that works, but what the dealership tried getting done in 4 weeks was done in less than 4 days after I called.

Yes, seems a little crazy. This is my first Toyota product and I am quite shocked and let down, for lack of other words.

I think they were under a lot of pressure ro release the truck in 2022 and didn't want to hold off on minor cosmetic issues. My guess is some supplier mistakenly cut all the windows trim pieces short and they decided to go with it knowing the risk. As for misaligned installs, most likely assembly line replacements from covid stricken employees.

Zero quality control on these trucks it seems. Just a shot in the dark if your truck comes off well put together or not. But I guess that’s what the warranty is for.

my assumption is it was of more value to get the trucks out and sold and have them fixed later by the dealers then to have more trucks held back at the plant slowing production down.. I have been assured every issue I have found or will find will be fixed.

Shit happened once Toyota decided to build cars in the states. I'd pick a Japanese build car over any unionized US car any day.
