    Hey fellas,

My two boxers ravaged my last cars cargo area, FJ cruiser. Mess of scratches, fur, slobber, etc. At some point I will need to transport them in the newTundra, likely back seat area, with seats up, and a blanket type thing. I get anxious just thinking about it. Any recommendations on the blanket type thing? Dog hammock, whatever they are called.

I know a cab would be best - but its not in the budget at the moment.

    Thanks!
    Jim

    Hey Jim!

We use a couple different items. Or rather we had used and now use something different. So we used to use travel crates that we secures in the bed of the truck and the dogs seemed good to ride in there. Each had their own protected "den" with a blanket they liked and a soft mat liner so they could lay down while we drove around.

They now ride mostly in the rear seats along with our kids (Crewmax) because we needed the entire bed space for camping gear. While our older dog is better than our younger, they both suffer from moments of anxiety. I found these shirts called Thunder Jackets that you wrap them in and it seems to provide some calm for them. For dogs just chill out when they have them on. They weren't really expensive. ($50 - $75 CDN)

We bought it at the local PetSmart, so whichever pet stores ya'll got down there.
    Hope that helps!

    Lol - drop it.

I don't hate the idea - but they still look to be about $600. Any budget options for a soft top, or brand recommendations?

Softopper is the brand, and you will spend more than 600.

I have had 4 or 5 of the softopper brands and they are so worth every penny. Look on CraigsList for used ones. Usually those are in the 450-500 range.

I'll explain why I don't put dogs in the cab of my truck.

    - Interior damage can get very costly to repair or take a huge hit on resale.

    - Some people don't harness their dogs inside the cab. I made that mistake once and was glad my 130 lbs Rottweiler wasn't hurt or myself as he flew from the back of my CC Dodge, past me, and came to an abrupt stop in the passenger floor board.

    - I keep the spill free water bowls in the bed of my truck so they can water themselves.

    - Dogs now have shade.

    - Dogs love poking a nose out and sniffing the air while driving.

    - Dogs aren't all cramped up inside the cab.

No barrier, but they are strapped into the belts with a harness set that we got at the store as well. Both sit up between the kids and usually lay down on the seat or depending on where we are driving they sit on the floor below their feet.

Canvas tarp, a few grommets, three wire ties, a piece of PVC conduit and two short pieces of line. I have at least 100K with this setup and it is hard to beat. I hunt and throw muddy dogs right in. Take the tarp out and scrub with a deck brush once in a while.

This is the tarp I used but it has about doubled in price so they can be found cheaper.

I agree - My dogs ride in a pet carrier with food and water and plenty of room what for stretching in the back of the vehicle. I love my pups but it's difficult to drive when you have hot, stinky beagle breath in your ear.

Also hair and slobber and toenails.. They have a better time outside anyway, noses held high, feeling like they're running 80mph.

I'm not sure what you are asking. Picture of the tarp setup is right there. The PVC conduit is in the fold of the tarp behind the front seats. The line is tied around PVC and to headrest. Wire ties are used to connect to top of back seat at child seat anchors.

One of the reasons why we got the decked drawers, lots of room for Katie to have! With the side windows open and the shade, we only rarely have to worry about the heat. There's no way she is getting into the cab. That is just the way it is.IMG_0407.jpg

This is the base layer for a cross country hunting/road trip. No way I could put three dogs back here and the stuff in back seat. I do have a 12 volt vac to suck up some of the dog hair while on the road.

I just clean his slobber or nose prints off after the ride, takes all of 5 minutes. A good vacuum with pet hair attachment works well (but he's a minimal shed and blows a coat twice a year). I let him hang his head out of the windows because well, he's a dog and enjoys the hell out of it. The Kurgo hammock has hell up really well and is washable. I'd recommend it. Pic is him after wherever we go, usually...

I just made this and have since carpeted it. It is 60/40 split and easy to remove. Will try to remember to take a pic with carpet.

If you get a "soft top" for your truck bed I recommend going with best top the customer service is way better than soft topper who I think are quite rude. I had horrible experience trying to get products from them when I had my Tacoma and would not recommend them to anyone.
