Did residential tree service in my youth, used to climb and rope everything. I've used a combination of stihl and Husqvarna, and have always had better luck with the Stihls. Biggest saw i ran was an 066, which is equivalent to today's 660, with a 35" bar. Still own that along with a 391, 362, 270, 028, and a 191 climber. I keep the 270 at home, the rest are in storage at my parents.

I run a Husqvarna 353. Bought it new, probably 15+ years ago. When I picked it up, I didn't have the money to step up to the 346xp, so I got it's sibling. No regrets. It goes through about 5-10 cord a year, and still runs great. Light, powerful, dependable, and like the Tundra...thirsty.

After firing up my Stihl and putting it back in storage, I went home. Couple blocks away. I pull up and my friend/landlord had cut off a very large limb from one of our big spruce trees. With a Chinese corded Crapsman chainsaw with a dull chain that he hand sharpened totally wrong. Before I had a chance to say anything my friend is "teaching" my grandson how to cut limbs and such. I shut that shit that down immediately. "Let me go get my Stihl in storage that's still warmed up." Chainsaw master here ha! Came back. Finished up in 5. As I walked away...."Go pick up your wood." His wife was impressed......Orygun!

I was a hotshot for 8 years, sawyer for 5. Highest cert possible…C. Very proud of being able to cut the gnarliest fire damaged trees as a young man. Started a tree mitigation service 2009-2010. I Stihl have a MS46 28” bar that I use for fire wood on camping trips. Reminds me of what I used to be and my useless talent in life.

Excellent! Thank you for your service. Stihl seems to be the go to saw. Just explained to my grandson what a Hotshot is. Not sure if he totally understands but I'll make sure he does!

Thank you! 2001-2008. Best life as a young man traveling the west working hard sleeping under the stars. My Stihls never let me down during the long seasons.

PS… any other current or old hotshot sawyers on the forum? If so crew and year? Sorry to jack the thread I’ll move it if you’d like. Just curious as to how many are on here.

There are few Hotshots on here. Hotshots need chainsaws. No need to move your post. I'm not a forum moderator, but your post is fine here, but we need to hook you up with the other Hotshots here. That being said.....help Mods or Hotshots following:thumbsup:?????

I tried a quick search using "Hotshots". Nothing came up but there are Hotshots on this forum. Not many but they are here.

I've been running a Stihl 362 with 20" bar for a bit over 10 years, can't say enough good things about it. Used for volunteering at the local arboretum 2-3x per month including cleanup after tropical storms. Has never failed to start and always has enough power without being a pain to carry for a couple of miles.

Not a hotshot, but I carried my red card when I was younger. Never made it out west, but I’ve seen my share of brush fires here in MA. Had a kid work for me 2 seasons ago right as Covid hit that was bumped from his crew due to being from a “high infection” state. I’ve given him 3 referrals to get back on crews this year.

I had CAD (chainsaw acquisition disease) a while back, its in remission right now. It culminated with an MS880 and 44" bar but I sold it and a couple 460s a few years back. Down to just the basics now, a 660, two 460s, a 360, an 028 and a Husky 350.

Another Stihl guy here. I have a MS250 with a 16" bar. It's just for camping, 4wheeling, firewood collecting. I do want to get a bigger saw, because reasons.

We've got a Stihl Farm Boss that's about 4 years old, and a Kobalt 48V electric saw with a 14" bar on it.

99% of the time I reach for the Kobalt because I can cut a LOT of trees with it in the amount of time it takes to get that POS Stihl started on a cold morning.

Yep. Mine had been sitting in a cold storage unit for a few months. 3rd pull got it started.

    All Stihl here:
MS290 Farm Boss, well over twenty years old and always fires right up
KM130R Kombi with pole saw attachment
HT101 pole saw that I picked up to cut higher limbs than the Kombi could reach when I had to clear several miles worth of tree limbs overhanging the road on the way into where we were placing our hunting cabin. OBTW, I doubt CrossFit has anything on the workout you get running one of these overhead for hours on end.

Our stuff gets lightly used and maintained well and I've never seen a piece of Stihl equipment in my life that would start on 3 pulls.

We've also got an OLD Dolmar saw that will cut circles around the Stihl, and like I said the Kobalt electric saw is finding itself more use.

    Too many, but not enough....
I am currently in the market for a gas chainsaw that I plan on keeping a very long time. Being that my wonderful state saw it fit to ban gas powered outdoor equipment, I need to purchase something soon in case my plans to move out of state get stalled. Currently, I have 1 enormous tree on my primary property and about 30 large trees on my property in my mountain cabin. I also would be gathering 2 to 3 cords of wood a year in the forests around my cabin.

I was looking into the Husqvarna rancher 455 or 460. I want a 20" bar at a minimum as I feel this size will pretty much cover me for anything i would possibly use it for now or in the future. Does anyone have any advice for my needs and if the present Huskys are of the same legendary quality as the past ones?
