What is the impact of them not getting along? Are they sabotaging each other?

Without knowing details, I'll say that often stems from a lack of discipline on both sides, both shifts have to leave a clean functional shop for the next shift. That's kind of rule one, you can come up with the rest by listening and communicating a common set of goals for each shift. You can also rotate folks between shifts, this has its own issues though.

Sounds like you have a shift first, company second problem. That's not the hierarchy to support. That's usually from a tight knit group that gets along well and the thought that they do it better.... It seems like a negative but that's a great problem to have. You need to get those shift leaders together and have some talks of reinforcement on company-first, team- second success and the ramifications of what could transpire when it doesn't happen. But, that's my world. It's not always like that in private industry.

Are they union? If yes, good luck with that.

My experience is that when separate groups don't get along or talk shit, they are frat boys. But, as @landphil said (in other words), hard to be a bitch with the guy you work with all the time.

I honestly find myself wishing we had more women in my job. The dudes f it all up, big time.

Downside is, zero chicks who can code and want to code. But even so, a non coder chick is way better than a non coder dude.

You want one chick per shift. Otherwise, they eat each other. Not like you might think.

My crews have clear expectations of what I expect. A few are:

    - Respect your co-workers and workspaces. You don’t have to like someone to show a little decency and respect.

    - Set the following shift up for success. If one shift fails to perform…we all lose out. This is a big one for me. I’m not into the “screw your co-worker” over mentality. It’s toxic and it spreads. If someone doesn’t do everything in their power to do their own job and then set the person coming on…I have no need for them.

Probably a good idea to have a crew meeting between the two shifts and figure it out. I’ve seen some of the most sophomoric issues cause riffs between crews (like someone leaving dishes in the crew sink).

I recently read a good book on leadership written by a couple of former Navy SEALs. Without more specifics on your scenario, I think their key point that would apply here is to remember that the enemy is outside the company fenceline, so to speak. Everyone in the company is working with the best of intentions for the success of the company. (If they aren't, that's a separate problem that has an obvious solution.) If there's one team whose work doesn't seem to align with the corporate direction, that's on you as their leader. You need to ensure everyone on the team is clear on the vision and objectives and what role they play in achieving them. You'll also find success if you drive ownership and decision making down to their level as much as possible. Give them a say in planning work and let them own their part of the job.
