My 01 tundra is currently 2 wheel drive and would love to install 4x4 with 1 ton axels, a complete redo, but need thoughts on doing this...

You are better off buying a HD truck if that is what you need/want.

Installing larger axles on a truck is one thing. Installing new axles, related suspension, converting to 4wd is another. HUGE job and lots of $$$, fabrication, etc. There are threads here about converting to 4wd, it is a large undertaking, costly and not for the average home mechanic.

You will be way ahead if you sell the 2wd and get a 4wd truck and start upgrades from there.

I would just buy a trailer for carrying heavy loads and a 4 wheeler for really rough adventures. The right tool for the job just works.

There seems to be two assumptions of OP: either he's insane for doing that just for 4wd, or he wants to build a crawler. That could use some clarification.

Meh, dont listen to this guy either ^^^^.

Its your money OP, build it the way you want. Where did he ask about carrying heavy loads? He wants to convert to 4wd and get rid of the shit IFS. I say go for it. Just be prepared for a lot of frame reinforcement. These tundra frames were riveted together and are super flimsy.

I get it! Just pointing out that for less time and money one can have the ability to carry more weight than a 1 ton or go places that no truck or jeep can explore. It's easy to start these types of projects but difficult and expensive for many to ever finish them. If OP can make it happen or just likes to tinker, great too! Hope all goes well either way!

Well said. It definitely isnt for the faint of heart. Hell i started building mine 2+ years ago and stopped working on it for a year of that. Finishing them is the tough part. And they are never finished.
