Smartcap EVO shell, Rail system, bed cover, ceramic tint including windshield, tinted headlights and tail lights, full time gps alarm system with dash camera front and rear, bull nose for front, debating rear bumper, waiting on long gun locker for under rear seat with seat rail mods to sit flush and not raise back seat, Pedal Commander ordered as well as fender flares and tinted film for front logo and led conversion lights for all interior lights
My RSI just came in and looking at potentially switching to a full time camera view/rear view mirror that would replace the OEM/Factory one. As it stands I don't use the onstar or the garage door remote buttons in any way so I don't see a loss in replacing the mirror.

    Has anyone done this.

The one i'm eyeing is the AUTOVOX T9 on Amazon for around $185 after coupon applied.

In some ways I think even without the need due to the Smartcap the upgrade to a full wide angle view behind me with zero obstructions is almost reason enough.

Also I will be towing a SeaDoo and Zero S so backing definitely will be a regular thing as I travel all over the US with them in the Spring and Summer.

    Thanks for any experience/input.

I've found this forum to be the best thing I ever joined after buying my 21' Tundra and she's almost done with the major upgrades/mods. I can't put the Smart Cap on today as the weather here in Central Texas is minutes away from going into full crap mode. Hopefully by Friday I can install her even though it will be chilly for Texans

I’ve thought about doing this as well. All the ones I’ve seen sandwich around your factory mirror.

The AUtovox one i'm looking at replaces the mirror vs sandwich, they have some mounts that come with and others you can purchase in case it doesn't fit your current, I just took a pic/look at my mount for my mirror and it seems pretty basic from what I can tell

Nice! Would be even better if it could be used with a mirror tap. Any idea if that works?

Also, does the truck show any errors if the factory mirror is disconnected?

Not sure yet, haven't gotten it yet. Wanted to see input from everyone and i'm trying to do as much homework as I can before pulling the trigger.

Best thing about forums like this and youtube, someone's always already tried it or worked it out

following here. thought about this too. I was even thinking of installing a second back camera that I could switch to right where the cargo lights are to get a eagle eye view of the back which would be good when using my equipment float.

Found this video on the Autovox pro. Its a bit more pricey but I like the overall setup. I contacted them to see if there is a way to connect more than one backup camera on there.

There is only one problem I see on my 2018. Exactly where their front camera there is a big plastic bulge reaching pretty far down. I fear it will interfere with the front facing camera. What is that bulge anyways? Just to remark: I tilted my mirror down a bit to be able to take a better pic, so it might look its fine to clear the bulge but it isn't.

Don’t care about the front camera. This is for a REARview mirror camera.

Those are your forward facing safety sensors. Namely, the front camera for the TSS system. Need to leave all that alone.

Dumb question but can these systems flip the image to make it look like you’re seeing it in your rearview mirror? This is different from a regular backup camera style image.

This is the one I have, simple to install and I love it.

    AKASO DL12 2.5K Mirror Dash Cam... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0855GMKMD?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

Sandwiches on to your existing mirror, has forward and rear cameras and records both onto an SD card. It also has a battery in it and if it feels the truck move when it's off it will turn on and start recording.

Whichever mirror you end up going with, I recommend getting a hardwire kit

Does it give you a mirrored display or a "backup cam" type display?

It's mirrored so the display is like your actually looking at a mirror. You can change it in the settings if you prefer the other way.

The Autovox t9 arrived and it is hardwired.
DId you run your own wires? i'm probably going to attack this project Wed and thinking of how I would go from the mirror area through the roof to the back and I saw some wire runs from the driver side cab area to the truck bed, but not sure the best route and way to run the hard wires, I'm not going to mount the camera where the tail gate latch is as it's useless when the tailgate is lowered

I'm looking to run it possibly from between the cab and bed with maybe a plug/connect disconnect and then run it into the RSI Smart Cap where I want to mount the camera on the rear upper area above the Smart Cap rear flip up door

I ran my wires across the top of the driver's side doors and through the bottom of the third brake light. If you wanted to run to the back of the Cap I would run down the driver's a pillar and across the bottom of the doors to the back of the cab and then down under the bed to the back.

I think i'm thinking what you're thinking, going down the drivers side and under the doors to back of the cab, be first time doing any wiring runs on the Tundra so better to ask around 1st, definitely excited to get the cap on and then the rear view mirror camera with a fully unimpeded view !

Run it down from your A pillar to the passenger side floor, there is grommet, run wire through there then along bottom of truck and up to your bed through the drain hole in the truck bed wall. There are more wires running to the back of your truck and you can zip tie the new wire on those. probably good idea to run the wire in a sleeve.
Let me know how you like the Autovox. You can't run a second backup camera on the Autovox, I asked and they said no.
There is this with separate front and rear camera. You could use both cameras for the rear if you need only 2 rear cameras.https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09C1QVYHM?smid=A1RM0C05SJCCJY

Reviving this old thread as I’m lookin to snag a RSI smart cap and will be in the useless rear view mirror club. @RikkiBobbi did you ever get around to installing the auto-vox? That’s the one I’m eyeing as well to hopefully give me eyes in the back again.
