How can you tell if you just got played?

To be fair my road is a private drive. Named, after me, that's 3 blocks long with 8 cameras and my retired father living on it, with a itchy trigger finger

 

Thats what I need...to arm my kids and tell em to shoot anyone they don't know

 

Are you kiddin'? I get phone calls from our local sheriff's department all the time, asking for donations. I'm not interested in donating any more money to them.

I just "donated" $200 for doing 51 on a rural county road posted at 35.

 

I have been getting calls periodically from what sounds like the same group. Colorado police benevolence society I think. I just politely tell them no.

 

I should've but I was unexpectedly low on force field pellets today. I'm not normally that vulnerable but something just opened the walet today

 

What you couldn't think of any goodies to get for your truck?

I was thinking that supporting a good cause was a better idea today but funding the Indian Prince mightve been what I did instead. To.or row I'm going to do a little investigatory searching

 

I hope you only gave him $20! Like Sean said, donate time or check with your local PD in the future.

I work for a foundation and deal with this all the time. Most (not all) organizations like the one you described above are scams and only about 10% of the funds you give actually get to the intended organization. The remaining funds are retained by these "Professional Fundraising" firms. You can google that phrase and you will find more information than you want to read.

There are several good websites that you can check when considering a donation to a charity or 501(c)3 non-profit organization. GuideStar.org, charitynavigator.org, givewell.org, and others are great resources that will show you the percentage of your dollar that goes to the actual program, fundraising costs and administration.

You always need to ask the caller who THEY WORK for. Most likely they are not employees of the charity for which they are calling. Most of these Professional Fundraising firms are actually FOR PROFIT companies. There is nothing wrong with this at all, however they must disclose that fact if you ask.
