Hey guys. Going a little off topic here. Last night here in New York City two young Police Officers responded to a domestic incident in upper Manhattan in Harlem. They were both tragically shot in the head by a multiple convicted felon mutt. Officer Mora age 27 is in critical condition fighting for his life and Officer Rivera age 22 was fatally wounded. 22 f’ing years old.
The reason im ranting like this is I just came in from changing the battery out of my son’s car with him. He’s 23. He did the battery more or less by himself and just wanted me there to watch. Then it hit me. There’s a father somewhere in Harlem who wont ever do anything like that with his son ever again because of this POS.
I will attend this Officer’s funeral because I always do. I will put my dress blues on and stand out in the cold and it will be my honor to do so. The hardest part for me at these funerals is when im standing at attention as the hearse passes and I look into the first limo with the immediate family. I always wish I could have helped somehow to save this officer. Especially this 22 year old kid. When I got on the police department in 1990 an old timer who I worked with gave me a card with a saying on it and I just wanted to share it with everyone.
The killing of a police officer does that to other men and women who wear badges for a living- stimulates them to convene as they never will for other occasions. They will travel hundreds of miles, from several states away and from Canada too, to pay their respects, not so much to a person they never knew but in homage to an exclusive, lonely tribal occupation that no one besides them fully understands. Every cop who dies in the line of duty does so alone, in surprise and perhaps for that reason every other cop who can do so attends the internment if for no other reason than to attone for arriving too late.
Thanks for reading and keep these two families in your thoughts.

Have full respect for the men and women in uniform. I have a nephew who is a police officer in New Orleans. Thank you for sharing this perspective. We should feel honored and lucky to the people in blue. Condolences to you.

To everybody who chimed in here. THANK YOU. Ive been to way too many of these funerals but this one was different. The turnout was unbelievable. I never saw one like it. I met police oficers from at least 25 different states, Canada, UK, and countless other places. It made me proud to be a part of this “club”. It was also the saddest I have ever attended. Maybe because its the first one I have been to since retiring and I felt a little on the outside but I think mostly because this kid is so young. Hes a year younger than my youngest kid. Then driving home by myself I called my wife and it hit both of us how much of a kid he really was. We talked and cried together for the last 30 minutes of my drive. I am truly heartbroken for this family. But again, thank you to everyone for liking and adding on.

The same brotherhood exists in the fire service. There will be funerals for 3 here next week all from one fire and a 4th from covid.

Such a shame, RIP. His wife’s eulogy, as they all are, was tough to hear. Horrible how they left on bad terms before his

Friendly reminder to always make up before you leave for work.

She was beyond profound…. I could only imagine what it took for her to say what she said. She solidified why a cop should never leave the house angry and should give an extra hug/kiss or even a “I love you” to their spouse and children…

    RIP Officer Rivera.

I've always backed the Blue. Cousin was Chief in a little town and nearly all of my family is prior military. While I disagree with some of NYPD's actions of late, I never wish any good officer harm.
