Clarification: The PIN screen is asking for me to set up an account. I have an account - thats why I can remote start the truck.

Once I registered the key fob to my profile I stopped getting all of the alerts on the radio. Even if that wasn’t setup, you can still remote start the vehicle, at least in my experience. Key fob, watch or phone all worked for me.

Just an update on my truck, the dealer is waiting on the field rep to arrive so they can go through the file for further diagnosis. The field rep would already have the file but it was to large to send digitally.

On another note, there’s a guy on the forum saying he is having a parking support malfunction. Along with the shutters not operating properly and the oil pressure acting up. The only similarity to me is the malfunction he had, but maybe it’s the same just a different freak out.

I think some CEL will cause the precollision and other Toyota Safety Sense functions to stop working. So far I’ve seen grill shutter code and turbo wastegate code comes on at the same time as brake malfunction error. It seems intentional from Toyota for whatever reason.

My radio would reset at the same time I’d get the malfunctions. I even had the front collision malfunction. Like I said no other codes besides the safety stuff. I bet it’s the same as mine just reacting different. Wouldn’t it be the DCM? I believe that controls the safety system, which doesn’t explain the radio issue I’m having. We’ll see

Glad to hear your getting such a response. I haven't had the issue crop up again since that one time earlier this week. I'm just waiting on the gremlin to pop up again because I know things never "just fix themselves."

I would think so. It's a all new truck and is bound to have somethings pop up once in the field. You guys are the final element of research and development....real world trials. I'm sure they want it to be as perfect of a truck as you all do...JMHO

So I heard from Toyota Headquarters and they had an update on my truck I wasn’t aware of. They said for the CarPlay issue they’ve ordered me a new radio that’s due to arrive on Tuesday. When I asked about the safety malfunctions, she didn’t know anything about it. I attempted to call my service advisor (twice) and I sent a message, but I haven’t heard back yet. So idk if they’re throwing parts or if they’re onto something. I’ll update with more later.

My Toyota ticket number is 220124000292

Thanks for keeping us updated and passing along the ticket #. I'll certainly reference it, if needed. Mine still hasn't done it since that one time Tuesday morning.

I guess it's easier/cheaper for them to slap in a new radio vs replacing the DCM...which I'm sure is buried down in the dash somewhere. Probably a PITA to get to and they want to avoid that.

Hopefully you don’t experience that anymore. If you or anyone else does, hopefully it’s known across the board and they have a fix ready or at least in place.

Bummer. Really hate to see these types of issues with your trucks, having something new with problems and fresh car payment is no bueno. Good luck with getting them fixed.

I was without my 21 Silverado for just over 30 days and they were lost. I feel a little more confident with this process and they are lost as well. At least with Toyota they’ve gotten people involved and genuinely want to fix it. Just my opinion and how I feel about the process so far.

I feel the same, my limited experiences with the Toyota dealerships / service centers has always felt more geared toward customer service than getting the customer or problem out the door. I imagine experiences may vary between dealerships. My dealer close to home and I do service with is top notch, where I bought my truck was a different story. Won't get into the weeds but there were many strikes against them that were unfortunate when I was purchasing my very first brand new truck. I had a 2015 Silverado before, it was a great truck but I got the double cab and needed more room.

My Service Advisor text me back...

Good Morning. Toyota has instructed us to order a new radio. The part comes from California. We should have it Wednesday. Would you like to stay in the Rental? Would you like your Truck back until we receive the part?

I called him and I obviously told them to keep my truck until it’s ready. He couldn’t go into detail on why they believe it’s the radio, because he didn’t want to relay the wrong information. When I pick it up next week (hopefully) they’re going to have the main tech explain it. I did ask him about the dash and radio communicating, which he replied they’ve figured they can when there’s an issue. I’ll try to clarify the details later.

On a side note. When all of this started occurring my wife and I had a conversation about the possibility of a loose connection. It’s very possible that’s it after talking to Mick (Service Advisor). He said the tech pulled the radio, checked each individual pin connector, put it back together and drove the truck with no issues. It was hooked up to the data recorder and it showed no issues at that time. That’s when Toyota said to just replace the radio. With the new information they have they’re going to compare notes throughout the country and go from there.

Toyota Headquarters told me Tuesday, Dealer said Wednesday. We’ll see what happens when it comes in. They have to install it and reprogram the DCM.

If you still have some issues with the radio after the replacement, we have found out my trucks issues were Toyota App and phone setting related. Since working with the dealer last week I have had zero CarPlay errors and zero locked screens.

    PIN Screen issue
Root Cause: Toyota App and iPhone
    Fix: Reinstall the Toyota App.
When we reviewed the App history last week there has been 6 versions of the Toyota App (12.2.4 to 12.2.9) in the last month, 10 versions in the last three months. I have owned the truck for a month so potential of 5 updates. My phone had “auto updates” selected and the thinking is this may be why I was having issues over the month where the radio worked, then didn’t work, then worked, then error 5 minutes after every start up. You think you have it fixed and then the App updates? Could also explain why the behavior of the radio changed through the month.

The blue PIN keypad screen that was taking over is for inputting your PIN from the setup account email. A different PIN screen with 2 rows of number is the App PIN code. Knowing this gives me an idea of what stopped functioning correctly. The remote start was always available from the App even with the PIN screen issues.

    CarPlay Errors:
    Root cause: Phone settings.
Fix: Make sure WiFi is ON before you start the truck.
Went through many scenarios turning settings on and off, plug the cable in and unplug it to see what would cause errors. In the end it we consistently found WiFi being OFF caused errors. The phone would get into an endless “Yes / No” loop when trying to turn it on after it displayed an error. Reboot the radio. There might be something else we changed? We got the App working first. Anyway, it works now.

    Blue No network connection.
Root cause: Truck is always trying to communicate to the mothership.
Fix: None. Click “OK” and it goes away. This is a result of where I travel. Being beside rock cuts or in dense forest blocks the signals and this error pops up. I wish this was like the “weak signal” or “No HD signal” errors that drop down for a few seconds and then scroll back up to disappear.

Summary: No updates were done to the radio (Head Unit). Phone settings and software versions on the phone were making all the difference.

Phone settings that are working as of today are refreshed Toyota App 12.2.9, phone iOS 15.2.1, auto updates are off, WiFi is on.

This morning I see iOS 15.3 is available – this might improve CarPlay – or make it worse. Since this radio is so dependent on how the phone is set up, I am going to leave the current settings for now and enjoy it working.

That’s a good point. When I pick the truck up I’ll delete and download the Toyota app again. I’ll be getting a fresh start anyway, so why not. As far as my IPhone it’s a 12 with iOS 14.2, I’m not big on updating since all my last iPhones have had issues with every update just about. My daughters mini 12 got updated last night because hers freezes all the time. If 15.2 operates properly I’ll think about updating.

My CarPlay issue was connecting wirelessly. No matter how many times I would try to manually connect it, it’d do nothing. With a cord it worked fine, least until it starting rebooting even more often no matter what. At that point my phone wasn’t even connected to the radio any longer (Bluetooth or CarPlay).

Have WiFi and Bluetooth on. For some reason the WiFi “on” made it work with no issues.

Wireless Carplay needs the wifi to be on. Your iphone will actually show that wifi is not on when connected to wireless carplay and if you try to turn it on, it’ll ask you if you want to disconnect carplay. It’s a little counterintuitive.

That's where we had the error we could not get out of. When the phone was connected with the Wifi OFF it got stuck in the endless loop in "do you want to disconnect" and either "Yes" or "No" would not get you out. Rebooted the radio to get out.

I picked the truck up this morning and because of our nasty weather, I didn’t setup my phone through the radio. I just swapped all of my stuff from the loaner to my truck and took off. I had just gotten off work as well. I did hook up a cord to work CarPlay and I didn’t experience any issues. I’ll get the radio setup this evening and see what happens.

Side note. I didn’t get any detailed information on the repair and why Toyota specifically wanted to replace the radio. I do have to go back to the dealership Monday and I’ll talk to the shop foreman then and update.

Glad you have your truck back! Interesting though, may not releasing detailed information yet to customers is a way Toyota is protecting itself.

They said they would, but we’ll find out. I’m not too worried about it though because Toyota and my dealership took care of me.

Yeah for sure. It seems like they forgot that SR doesn’t have a trailer brake controller.

Way too short, but the response to the issue was really good and I still love the truck. After driving a 2022 Sienna hybrid while it was in the shop I appreciate it even more LOL. Well, 32mpg was really nice though. Don’t forget the special sliding door that allows you to dump kids and never stop.

I just bought my 2022 Tundra 3 weeks ago and have the exact same issues. Toyota is blaming Apple Carplay and saying and update is on the way without a date expected. Issues we share:
    -Carplay connection error
    -LTA Malfunction "visit dealer
    -Crash alert on dash intermittent
-Having to enter my PIN for the phone to connect the profile each time i start the vehicle
-When carplay does connect - I sometimes have no sound coming from the HU even though the timer on the song shows that it is playing - attempts to use volume on HU and on steeringwheel are useless as they don't affect the volume

Thankful that I found someone with the same issues. I don't want to keep crying "wolf" to Toyota when they have not seen any other issues like this previously.

Apple and Toyota are working on fixing the CarPlay issue. That’s probably why they have no idea on a release date. What kind of phone do you have? While the dealer had my truck they used several different phones from employees and the Droid phones worked flawlessly and Apple had all of the issues (at that time). I have to take my truck back for the same issue as before but It doesn’t do it while driving. Now when I’m having CarPlay issues and reset the radio I get the same fault codes as before.

I'm having an issue with Google Maps and Android Auto. About every 3rd drive, it loses the GPS signal and can't figure out where it is. Don't know if it's an issue with the head unit or Android Auto.

I'm hoping the firmware update resolves it. If my truck ever gets it.
