After reading up on the turbo thread someone posted a picture of some flat piece slapped on with “silicone” on the inside of the box. I thought Toyota would never do such a hack job. You can’t believe everything you read on the net - right. So tonight I decided to take a peak.

    51DD6805-A9D4-45F4-9EB9-A5091E6DE629.jpg

This is the location, on the inside. Both sides.

    F4D9CD7D-04D2-4024-B35E-EF2ABBC507D3.jpg

I’m not sure if they are marked “L” and “R”. I also could not find a part number for them.

I have a lot of mixed feelings right now. I have been a Toyota guy for years. I just spent a lot of money on a new truck. I’m disappointed. I’m pissed. I’m shocked.

So, email Toyota and ask them what it is.

    Second!

Lol. Of all the things 3rd gen tundra or toyota related that could break the camel's back, you choose a piece of what i assume is vibration deadening on the inside of the box side you cant even see.

That might be for vibration dampening/control of the bedsides. Looks slapped in place but there might’ve been a loose tolerance on its placement.

Appears to be part of the body, so shouldn't have a separate part #. My guess is it's for re-enforcing in that area of the body possibly to stop vibrations at high speeds.

It's plastic with adhesive showing inside the bed panel! It's shocking! Send it back! Happy Friday everyone.

E Z. I get why he's pissed. I just think the best way to find the answer is to go to the source. I'm not making fun of the guy or being sarcastic.

I think that’s what it is as well.

Yet that is not applied by a robot. It’s a last minute thought and slapped in. I’m concerned the salt from the winter roads will collect behind it and I will have a nice hole in 5-7 years. One side does not look like a 100% seal.

I can certainly understand the corrosion concern, I would start by taking to the dealer and have them look at it and ask if they can seal it if necessary. At least that's were I would start.

    Sorry.

I thought I had legitimate concerns with the truck that I would let other potential 2022 owners know. Never had issues like this on the previous four trucks.

I have said the mechanical part of the truck is great. Pulls great. Posted real mpg.

    Sorry again.

This is on the sheet metal (aluminium). Inside of the skin. Not on the tub.

Those in the rust belt will know what I mean about corrosion.

OK, I'm from the southwest and no snow here. But I figured salt wouldn't corrode the aluminum compared to its steel counterparts.

As others mentioned, it’s to reduce NVH. There for a reason, and that reason sure ain’t to look pretty.

Maybe it’s a hidden treasure map that’ll lead you to the tow hook conspiracy haha.

PS...Idc about the hooks just couldn’t pass up an opportunity. I’ll have to look at mine when I get it out of the shop

How would you feel if you found lead sheeting glued to fuselage panels in your Beechcraft Bonanza?

I even added material like this in the trunk of my 124 Abarth to prevent droning at certain engine RPM.

It is entirely possible that the issue was found after production had begun and it was cheaper and easier to have someone at or before the finish/"qc" section put it on. They may have found that at a certain speed, there is a resonance at the front of the bedside that could potentially lead to cracking at the front edge.

If you are very worried about it causing a problem, there is something you can do. In the summer, thoroughly wash the inside of the bedsides and allow to fully dry. Tape off the bedsides and use either an undercoating or spray on bed liner to protect it.

A dealer will probably put a bead of silicone over it if you find any issues with the edge not being sealed. I'd do that rather than just doing it myself so there is a paper trail of the "repair".

Remember when Toyota came out and said they would allow blemishes, etc. on parts that aren’t visible to the customer. This is it. No one can see it and it does the its job of dampening bed side resonances.

Guys I’m being misunderstood here. There looks like a gap on the one patch. There is the possibility of road salt getting in there. I’m not happy on how it was installed. Others may have a gap open. Take a look and see. Save yourself some corrosion issues down the road.

I might pull one off to find that treasure map.

Good thing they had a rainy day fund built up from all those transmission coolers they didn't install over the past few years! No doubt that.....blob....cost a few bucks that wasn't initially budgeted.

It's only a "patch" if there's a hole on the outside it's trying to seal. Unless you see a hole on the outside of the bed box...I'm sure it's just vibration control / deadening. You can't even see it unless you crawl underneath & look.

If there's a gap that would allow road salt in there...run a bead of RTV silicon on it or point it out to a service writer the next time you're at the dealership and they'll do it for you.

Sorry but I think this is sensationalizing a relatively tiny issue.

That’s not too out of the ordinary. Hell my first gen has one kinda like that and it was put on sloppy. Before I redid it

it’s a material designed to absorb the noise of the tinny sheet metal

It acts as a mass damper. Lessens vibration and resonance in that body cavity, as was previously stated, so you can enjoy the ride.

Vibration/Noise reduction, got it. At the same time, from what I read, his complaint is the quality of the install not why it’s there.
